Google indexing thousands crazy search results with %25253
-
In GWT I started seeing very strange pages indexed a few weeks, and Google is no reporting over 21,000 of pages (blocked by robots.txt) with weird URLs like this:
The current robots.txt looks like this:
User-agent: *
Disallow: /wp-contentDisallow: /wp-admin
Disallow: /wp-includes
Disallow: /data
Disallow: /slideshows
Disallow: /page/*/?s=
Disallow: /?s=
Disallow: /searchThis website is running an up to date WP install with Yoast's Google Analytics and SEO plug-in. I can't point to anything specific that happened with the site when these URLs started appearing even after I modified the robots.txt.
What can be done to try and stop Google from creating and indexing these goofy URLs?
I see lots of sites having this issue when I search in Google, but no one seems to have a solution.

As it turns out the problem is with Yoast's Google Analytics plug-in per Yoast. However, he has not yet released a fix nor given a date for the fix as of yet. So one either needs to deal with it until fixed or switch plug-ins.

Hi Sha,
Well, that is a new possible lead, but unfortunately Pictage is basically worthless when it comes to any technological issues.
Hmm, is there some way I could add "noindex" tags to anything link that appears on the Proof page as they are dynamic in appearance?
Thanks,
Joe

Hi again Joe,
After a more detailed look at your site (which has no obvious search box available to users) I was curious as to why all of the things that you are doing on the site seem to have no effect upon the issues you are trying to resolve...and why your site is generating thousands of search queries without a search box!
This says to me "do you have control of all of the content?" ... and it appears that you are using an external service called Pictage to upload and display client portfolios.
So, are you pulling content into your site from Pictage? Is it some kind of white label add-on to your site?
If the pages from Pictage are being generated externally, then the yoast plugin cannot add the "noindex" tag to those pages...if this is the case then I would say you need to contact the Pictage help people and advise them that there is a problem they need to attend to.
Hope that helps,
Sha

Hi Egol,
Hmm, I have never heard of that possibility.
How can I change the resultant search URL with a Wordpress install?
Thanks.
-
Hi Sha,
I made the changes weeks ago, but more pages keep appearing which tells me Google is still trying to index them?
There is already an "s" parameter set in GWT, but I don't really see many options in this screen - are there some settings I'm missing?
There are also page URLs like this one, can they be blocked as well?
-
In addition to the suggestions already given... if this was my site I would change the URL of the search results page. Someone might have a robot that is tossing crap queries into your search box.
-
Hi Joe,
A couple of things:
- If you have made the change to noindex search results recently, it may take some time for the errors to disappear from GWT. If the number of pages continues to grow, then clearly the noindex is not implemented as you expect.
- You could try using the parameter handling feature in GWT to tell googlebot to ignore all pages with the parameter in question. In your search string, the ? says "here come some parameters" and the "s" is the parameter that you want to ignore.
Incidentally, there is definitely something funky happening with the generation of those search strings which should be investigated and resolved as well.
Hope that helps,
Sha

Yoast's WordPress SEO plug-in automatically does the following:
- RSS feeds are now always noindex, followed. No search engine should ever list an RSS feed as a result in the resultpages.
- Admin, login and registration pages are always noindexed now for the same reason.
- Search result pages are now always noindex, follow.
-
This is in your own website's search, right?
I've always heard that you should do on page robots that make it:
no-index, follow
So that all of the links on the page can be followed, but Google will not index it.

Home Pages of Several Websites are disappearing / reappearing in Google Index
Hi, I periodically use the Google site command to confirm that our client's websites are fully indexed. Over the past few months I have noticed a very strange phenomenon which is happening for a small subset of our client's websites... basically the home page keeps disappearing and reappearing in the Google index every few days. This is isolated to a few of our client's websites and I have also noticed that it is happening for some of our client's competitor's websites (over which we have absolutely no control). In the past I have been led to believe that the absence of the home page in the index could imply a penalty of some sort. This does not seem to be the case since these sites continue to rank the same in various Google searches regardless of whether or not the home page is listed in the index. Below are some examples of sites of our clients where the home page is currently not indexed - although they may be indexed by the time you read this and try it yourself. Note that most of our clients are in Canada. My questions are: 1. has anyone else experienced/noticed this? 2. any thoughts on whether this could imply some sort of penalty? or could it just be a bug in Google? 3. does Google offer a way to report stuff like this? Note that we have been building websites for over 10 years so we have long been aware of issues like www vs. non-www, canonicalization, and meta content="noindex" (been there done that in 2005). I could be wrong but I do not believe that the site would keep disappearing and reappearing if something like this was the issue. Please feel free to scrutinize the home pages to see if I have overlooked something obvious - I AM getting old. site:dietrichlaw.ca - this site has continually ranked in the top 3 for [kitchener personal injury lawyers] for many years. site:burntucker.com - since we took over this site last year it has moved up to page 1 for [ottawa personal injury lawyers] site:bolandhowe.com - #1 for [aurora personal injury lawyers] site:imranlaw.ca - continually ranked in the top 3 for [mississauga immigration lawyers]. site:canadaenergy.ca - ranks #3 for [ontario hydro plans] Thanks in advance! Google adding strings to meta title in SERPs => Driving my client crazy!
Fellow Mozzers, I'm really baffled by Google's behaviour adding strings before my meta title in the SERPs.
Technical SEO | | TheReference
This behaviour seems random, but it mainly happens on queries that trigger the homepages (multilingual .com domain).
I'm aware of meta title guidelines concerning length, and I know that Google may insert strings if it thinks it could benefit the user.
But clearly their "aid" is not helpful at all... Client is really anxious to get this resolved and we're stumped on what could be the cause for this... Some examples: Query: https://www.google.co.uk/#hl=en&pws=0&q=Ogone - Online payment gateway
Result title: en-gb - Ogone - Online payment gateway
Normal title: Ogone - Online payment gateway Query: https://www.google.at/#hl=de&q=Ogone Online Payment Service Provider
Result title: ogone.at - Ogone. Online Payment Service Provider & e-payment ...
Normal title: Ogone. Online Payment Service Provider & e-payment Deutschland
=> For longer titles it will just prepend strings, and leave out our piece of the meta title Query: https://www.google.nl/#hl=nl&pws=0&q=Support Ogone
Result: Support | Ogone
=> For very short titles, Google doesn't add anything, why does it so for the other results? I really don't understand why this happens. The titles are long enough (but not too long), no strange characters inserted. Please, please help. Thanks in advance! Nikolaas0 -
Google Sitemap - How Long Does it Take Google To Index?
We have changed our sitemap about 1 month ago and Google is yet to index it. We have run a site: search and we still have many pages indexed but we are wondering how long does it take for google to index our sitemap? The last sitemap we put up had thousands of pages indexed within a fortnight, but for some reason this version is taking way longer. We are also confident that there are no errors in this version. Help!

Website is not indexed in Google
Hi Guys, I have a problem with a website from a customer. His website is not indexed in Google (except for the homepage). I could not find anything that can possibly be the cause. I already checked the robots.txt, sitemap, and plugins on the website. In the HTML code i also couldn't find anything which makes indexing harder than usual. This is the website i am talking about: http://www.xxxx.nl/ (Dutch) The only thing that i am guessing now is the Google sandbox, but even that is quite unlikely. I hope you guys discover something i could not find! Thanks in advance 🙂

Local search results appearing above Organic
Hello, I've just performed a search for the query 'outdoor clothing' using Google Incognito mode and I've added the screenshots below to show my findings. The first attempt at the search only showed local results then when I clicked search again adverts were shown. I found this very odd, normally I'd see the local results after the 3rd of 4th organic result.Have Google changed their algorithm or is this just random? http://img209.imageshack.us/img209/8643/incognito1.jpg http://img692.imageshack.us/img692/6382/incognito2jf.jpg Thanks, Dan
