Do JSON feed / XML Feeds have any SEO benefits?
-
We are looking to use a 3rd party customer review provider and I have been told by their rep that it has a feature which allows us to display reviews placed with them about us on our website via JSON feed or XML feed (I have limited technical knowledge so have no idea what this is but am hoping our developer does!)
I wanted to ask whether providing data in either format has any SEO benefits?
My initial thoughts to provide customer reviews was to be useful to the customer and be useful for search engines as it will be continually updating user generated content (?)
Any help on this would be greatly appreciated.

Hello Jannkuzel,
That is correct.
Some 3rd party review sites get around this by placing the content on your site in an iFrame. What this would essentially mean is that they get credit for the content and you don't. So while that may be a good experience for your users, having the content on your page in an iFrame would not help your SEO directly.
If the content is NOT in an iFrame and is crawlable on the page (just search for a snippet of the comments/reviews in your source code) then you would have a duplicate content problem with that same content showing up on the 3rd party's website.
An ideal situation would be for you to be the only site that shows the reviews and comments since they are about your products, after all.
Good luck!

Thanks for your prompt reply Everett.
Does the 3rd party publish the review on their site as well? Yes
If so, are they crawlable by search engines? Yes (they are cached in SERP so yes?)
Does the feed they give you link back to their site? No link back to their site only one/two logos.
So just to confirm XML or JSON feeds would be crawled and have SEO benefit but having the same content (reviews) on our site and the reviewers own site could cause duplicate content issue?
Thanks in advance. I look forward to your reply.

Hello Jannkuzel,
Your developers certainly will know what a JSON or XML feed is, and how to implement it. The real question is: should you implement it?
Does the 3rd party publish the review on their site as well? If so, are they crawlable by search engines? Does the feed they give you link back to their site?
Ideally a review solution that you place on your eCommerce site would have reviews that ONLY appear on your site and does not include any links back to the service provider's website. After all, you're paying them so why should they also get free advertising, traffic and page-rank from you? However, an ideal solution and an affordable one often do not overlap.
I may have just complicated things more for you, but to answer your question:
Yes, the ideal solution described above would have SEO benefits for you. However, if the 3rd party site publishes the same content (e.g. your reviews) on their website it could create problems for you too.Regards,
Everett

Cross-linking for mobile SEO
Hi everyone! I am having a hard time finding information about weather to/how to apply internal seo linking to mobile versions of sites. We decided to go with dynamic serving with user agent detection. Our desktop site has a quite heavy seo-internal-cross-linking. As I understand, for mobile we should simplify and focus on usability, so get rid of unnecessary links. But I have a doubt about weather removing this part of the web structure can hurt our SEO. Do Google mobile bots look at and rank mobile versions of pages from scratch or do they use what they know about the site and the site's structure from its desktop version?

SEO Optimization for Sales Page
Hi, I am new to eCommerce. Traditionally I have run a couple of semi-successful websites relying largely on Adsense revenue and affiliate income. So I have a bit of experience with on page and off page SEO. This time around I am creating a membership site and also sell eBooks as bundles that non members can buy. My question is, should I SEO optimize the sales page for my eBook or use another content page that links to the sales page. For example, if I am selling an ebook on Dog Training and targeting the main KW "Dog Training Tips", should my sales page be optimized for "Dog Training Tips"? The reason I ask is because typically Sales pages do not provide a lot of useful information but are more geared around selling the product. The other option would be to create a helpful information page targeted for "Dog Training Tips" and lead users to my sales page through contextual links, banners, popups (I hate popups), etc. This would be the approach for the other LSI keywords anyways. Any thought would be appreciated.

Optimization for allready indexed web without seo before
Hi, I have some questions. I have 2 Joomla web sites who needs seo optimization, but there are allready indexed in Google: 1/ Will rel=canonical fix the problem for duplicated content for allready indexed pages? I have read different solutions but I haven't tested them all. I puted rel=canonical on the first web site that I started to optimize, but Google WMT shows me very small or not at all decreasing of duplicated content. Would it need more time? 2/How can I show search engines to craw and change the cache for a page that is allready indexed faster than 1-2 months? 3/ What is your opinion and experience? With done changes for one website for a low competition keyword /the web site was not optimized for search engines before/ how much time will it take usually for Google to see the changes made and change the ranking for some keyword?

SEO Domain Values
I always thought that there was no difference in value between a .com and .net, also that hyphens have the same value as the keyphrase without the hyphen. But I have heard Rand lately saying hyphens are spammy - whats the go? Is CarParts.com better than Car-Parts.com or Car-Parts.net etc?

Different names for Twitter/Facebook, and site?
Greetings, I want to optimize my site, www.atstrust.com. I know that posts to Facebook and Twitter help improve ranks. Does it matter though if my twitter/facebook sites have a different name than the domain I am optimizing? For example, my Facebook site is facebook.com/easyinspection. I assume that doesn't matter as long as the URLs on the site refer to my domain? Thanks! Eric
