How do I add a meta description to the individual pages on my cms driven site?
-
Hello,
As you can tell from my question, I'm COMPLETELY new to SEO. SEOMOZ flagged some pages as lacking a meta description. How do I add a meta description to the site?
The site has a CMS architecture so I can edit text on the individual pages, but I don't know how to add a meta description, or where on the page it should go.
Thanks!

Hi there
I have a similar problem using Weebly. One can only add tags to the home page. My url is www.positiveimpact4health.com Any ideas how to add the tags to each page?

Source code doesn't give any obvious clues. There's an admin page at objectivetrading.com/admin but that doesn't give anything away either (what can you do when you log into admin?)
So my best guess would be it's a custom-made, basic "CMS" from your developers, which isn't going to be much help I'm afraid...

Hi Andrew,
Thanks for your replies. I spoke with the developer and they seemed to think I wouldn't be able to edit the meta descriptions. That said, the url is objectivetrading.com Hopefully someone will know how to identify the CMS and update the meta descriptions.
Thanks!

Hi OT SEO,
Please provide the URL, it should be obvious from the code for one of us to see which CMS you are using.
Cheers

Hi Guys,
I spoke with the developers again and they confirmed that the FCK Editor was built using "PHP with Smarty Technology". Maybe they mean smarty.net??
Anyway, I'm not sure if this really answers the underlying concern. The pages that SEO Moz flagged as needing meta descriptions are all bottom menu pages. I'm not sure if that makes them less important or not.
Anyway, if someone knows how to add in meta descriptions to Smarty, that would be great!
Cheers!

Hi again OT SEO,
FCK Editor isn't a CMS. However, 'CK Editor' looks like it incorporates editing functionality by dropping in a plugin of some sort.
I've just found this:
http://ckeditor.com/integrationsWhich shows it supports Sharepoint, Joomla and Drupal CMS - so it would indicate you have one of these. If you can post your URL (PM if you wish) I will check for you.
Otherwise, here are links for each CMS listed on CKEditor explaining how to add Meta data, your original request:
Joomla:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k0ZcYDEjYbsDrupal (looks like there are some workarounds until a new update):
http://drupal.org/node/1039440Sharepoint:

Cheers,
Andrew

Hi Guys,
Thanks for the replies. I contacted the site manager (he didn't do the development). He said that the CMS is FCK Editor also.
I checked the CK Editor homepage and it indicated what Andrew said about it being the wysiwyg.
If CK Editor isn't the CMS, then where would I find the CMS information? When I want to change the content on a page I just change the text in the FCK Editor.
Thanks!!!!

Is it Drupal, Plone, Movable Type?
-
Hi OT SEO,
The FCK Editor is the wysiwyg you use to format text, add links etc. Like the one here on SEOMOZ comment replies.
If you could create a screenshot (feel free to send it to me privately) I might recognise the CMS you are using.
Cheers

Hi Guys,
Thanks for the super quick replies. Some of the pages have meta description tag fields that can be added in, but the bottom menu pages (among others) don't have this.
The CMS program (I think) is FCK Editor.
Thanks!

Hi OT SEO,
Which CMS are you using? Wordpress/Joomla/Typo3? Or an enterprise solution such as Sitecore or Magento?
If you can tell me which one, I'll be able to help
Cheers

Your CMS should have the ability to add custom meta title and meta description tags.
If it doesn't have that by default you should look for a plugin that will do the job.
Alternatively you might want to move to a more powerful CMS, such as WordPress.

"og:description" vs. name="description"
According to Rock Your SEO with Structured Social Sharing "OG description overrides meta description tag." Moz Crawl Diagnostics seems to ignore og:description and only look for meta name="description" - does that mean my meta descriptions tags should be meta name?

Our urls for adwords are slightly different from current urls presented on site (weused htaccess to help create shorter urls). How important is it that the adwords url match the sitemap url for keywords on those pages?
Hello, We have dynamic urls that we have made into short urls through htaccess and code manipulation. Some of our adwords urls are different from our page urls - for example a) Latest version of page www.abc.com/x-y-z.html b) Previous version of url www.abc.com/x+y+z.html c) raw original version www.abc.com/yyy/zzz?category=X&Product-code=Y etc etc. Would my ranking for keywords on the page improve if I diligently made all of them the same? They all go to the same page even now, and no 404 errors or anything. Thanks Sam

My Meta Description changes when i use different keyword in google search.
Hello everyone, I have a question for the community. I have a website with several articles and news that i manage. I set specific meta descriptions for every page but when i search in google it gives me back different meta descriptions depending on the keyword that i use to search. What i notice is that google looks in my page for the most relevant part of the text that combines with my keyword and gives me back that result. I thought that this only happen when i have an empty meta description. Anyone felt the same ? Best Ricardo www.meuportalfinanceiro.pt

I do not want all my META descriptions to be unique.
Hi, I have maybe 20 categories (new) that I really like to have the same Meta description for all of them. The category names call out the use of their respective products. but, all of these categories are related to a much bigger global initiative. I don't have enough space in the title to discuss the individual terms as well as the broader project, so I would like the META to say something like "Products related to <this thing="" my="" customers="" care="" about="">from</this> However, I am extremely paranoid about adding 20-25 meta descriptions that are identical, because Google. Am I overthinking this and being paranoid about Panguin and Penda?

On page/site - Images & bold text
As I understand it on a page where you are going for the keywords 'Metal gates', you have an image titled 'Metal gates' (Lets say MG for Metal gates to save on my typing!) with the alt tag being 'MG' Now as I also understand it, if an image is also used as a link the Alt tag is also the anchor text? So, I have a page on Metal gates using the above methods, from this page I have image links to a metal driveway gates page (as well as text links), would I be best using an image titled 'Metal driveway gates' with the alt text as ' Metal driveway gates' to link to my metal driveway gates page (if you follow me)? Also on the image question, what if you have say six images (that are all links) on the metal gates page, how would you title the images and alt tags? Variations on Metal gates? Or using the keyword on the page that the link points to? (I'm not looking to keyword stuff but want to get it right! ) Also is it important to have your on page keywords in bold still? i ask because I've bolded text on my pages but not the main keywords - I've bolded text that I want people to see, but do not want to take away any power from my keywords if you follow me?
