Home Page Optimization
-
I only discovered SEOmoz about a week ago and my knowledge in this area has grown 500% in that time, but I'm still a newbie.
I'm looking for whether I have the right general idea or not with my home page in regards to SEO. The page is located at Line.com.
The top section with the images is 100% for humans. The next section is where the SEO comes into play. I have 5 different services [sports monitor, free sports betting, sports betting forum, sports handicapper websites, gambling affiliate program] that I offer on 5 different inner pages. What I'm trying to do is have my home page rank decently for my desired terms and then pass link juice to the respective pages. My goal is to eventually have my inner pages rank higher than my home page for my desired search terms.
Do I have the right general idea or am I way off? Is this too much for the search engines with all of the links and bold text?
Design criticisms are also welcome, and anybody who wants to critique the inner pages would be forever thanked. Feel free to be as harsh as you want as long as it's constructive.
Thanks!

I use to have a footer like you mentioned, but took it away to reduce the total number of links on the page. I only left the links that weren't already in the header.
Is my strategy bad? I guess that question answer's itself if SEOmoz does it.
-
OK, well as I mentioned earlier, I'd just have a clearer indication of what terms you want to rank for on each page. Concentrate on 2-3 terms for each page first, then move on to the secondary terms.
I'd ultimately change the URL of that inner page to http://www.line.com/sports-monitor and do a 301. Clean it up a bit, don't bold too many random terms that you are not trying to rank for, add page title + meta tags, and link to it (and other pages) internally from other pages and the new footer I suggested.
-
That's the tricky part. Like I said, my site provides 5 basic services, each with their own page, so I want those 5 pages to rank well. My home page doesn't provide a service (except gaining user interest) but I still have to put something in the title.
I wouldn't care if my home page were nowhere to be found in the SEs if the other pages all ranked well, but I also recognize that it will be far easier to get my home page to rank, and I don't want to just throw that away.
Edit: My preference for the inner page ranking ahead of the home page is only a small preference. I'm okay with the home page ranking first if it happens.
-
No problem
If you would prefer ranking for that term on that inner page, I'd suggest you first revisit your homepage ranking strategy. "Sports Monitor" is the very first word in your title tag - do you want to rank for that term for your homepage or for http://www.line.com/sports-handicapper-rankings?
-
Wow, I had no idea about the link priority subject. Thanks for the article. I toned down the keywords a bit, but will have to look at that aspect separately.
You are right, I was being overaggressive. I was focusing on just about every combination of words that I'd like to rank for rather than the 2-3 most important. I will revisit my strategy.
Thanks!

Thanks!
4: I'd prefer ranking for "sports monitor" but as I've only recently started thinking about SEO, I unfortunately didn't know that when I built the site. Is it worth 301ing to "line.com/sports-monitor"?

Hi,
I think the overall design is pretty good. My advice would be:
- Your homepage title tag seems too long
- You seem to be spreading your targeted terms on the homepage too thin. Based on title tags and bolded text, you seem to be targeting: Sports Monitor, Sports Betting Forum, Handicapper Websites, Sports Handicapping Monitor, sports betting social network, sports betting forums, sell sports picks, sports handicapping scams etc. I'd try to just focus on 2-3, start ranking well for those then go after some secondary terms
- Your choice of anchor text for links to inner pages seems a little odd. E.g. for http://www.line.com/sports-handicapper-rankings I assume you'd want to rank for something like "Sports Monitor". Thus, you should link to that page with the term "Sports Monitor" on the homepage, not "Accurate Sports Handicapping Monitor". The link to the http://www.line.com/sports-handicapper-websites is worse - it's using anchor text "Web Design Skills" which is not what you want to be ranking for on that page.
- Some of the inner pages don't seem to be finished (title tags, meta tags etc) - e.g. http://www.line.com/sports-handicapper-rankings. Also, for that page are you trying to rank for "Sports Monitor" or "Sports Handicapper Rankings"? (or both?) I'd double check the URLs you are using.
Hope that helps!
Edit: I'd also add a better footer with basic internal linking structure. Even something like what SEOmoz has on this page is better than what you have with just the copyright info.

Just a few considerations:
-
You are linking from the menu and body of content to internal pages with arguably aggressive anchor text. There are plenty of articles that debate this practice and often would say the second link will not carry the anchor text. There is a really cool article about this here and I know Rand wrote an earlier one ages ago. I haven't tested it - so I can't 100% either way. Just something to think about when doing this strategy. Test it - and let me know what you come up with.
-
I don't get the internal linking to your sports website page, with the anchor text "web design skills". My best practice of internal linking is users first. Make it so a user is reading the article and can jump to a page that they would want to click on. (see what I did above - kind of similar approach).
-
Seems odd your H1 is below the fold, and is the same exact font/color as the titles above it.
-
I would say your a bit overagressive with your strategy, especially since I did a quick review of sites that do rank for these terms and yours stands out as the most aggressive. I'd suggest writing copy for the users not the search engines, and re-visit your content afterwards to find creative ways to integrate phrases that you'd ideally like to rank for.
-
Why not put some ALT tags on your page, especially your logo. Seems like "home" is pretty weak.
Best of luck on your SEO journey.

Hi Patrick, As you know that first impression is the last impression. So by building the home of our website attractive we can easily catch the audience.Simply by optimizing only the homepage is not important as well from SEO point of view but we have to optimize the most crucial pages which may bring the target audience & the conversion ration is also increased.
Mostly people don’t realize that the most common purpose of a website & the importance of their home page.Mostly people think that it helps to increase the interest, establish credibility & to promote their company & the products. But we should always kept in mind that we never tried to sell everything on the first page(home page) but it helps to make awareness.
There are some tips for Home Page to get optimized which helps us a lot.
From the above it is clear that home page is optimized for the customer & how they get attracted to our products/organization.
I hope that your query had been solved

Does an age verification home page hurt SEO?
There's a microbrewery in our area that just launched its first website. It has the "verify your age" homepage (which is not really their homepage, but I don't know what it's called) before you can enter. It looks like this: http://angrychairbrewing.com/ Anyway, does this hurt them at all from a rankings standpoint? Also, assuming bots/spiders/ROGER can crawl sites like this, (which I think they would have to be able to do) how do they get around this verification? Thanks, Ruben

Sites went from page 1 to page 40 + in results
Hello all We are looking for any insight we can get as to why all (except 1) of our sites were effected very badly in the rankings by Google since the Panda updates. Several of our sites londonescape.com dublinescape.com and prague, paris, florence, delhi, dubai and a few others (all escape.com urls) have had major drop in their rankings. LondonEscape.net (now.com (changed after rank drop) ), was ranked between 4th & 6th but is now down around 400th and DelhiEscape.net and MunichEscape.com were both number 1 for several years for our main key words We also had two Stay sites number 1 , AmsterdamStay and NewYorkstay both .com ranked number 1 for years , NewYork has dropped to 10th place so far the Amsterdam site has not been effected. We are not really sure what we did wrong. MunichEscape and DelhiEcape should never have been page 1 sites ) just 5 pages and a click thru to main site WorldEscape) but we never did anything to make them number 1. London, NewYork and Amsterdam sites have had regular new content added, all is checked to make sure its original. **Since the rankings drop ** LondonEscape.com site We have redirected the.net to the .com url Added a mountain of new articles and content Redesigned the site / script Got a fair few links removed from sites, any with multiple links to us. A few I have not managed yet to get taken down. So far no result in increased rankings. We contacted Google but they informed us we have NOT had a manual ban imposed on us, we received NO mails from Google informing us we had done anything wrong. We were hoping it would be a 6 month ban but we are way past that now. Anyone any ideas ?

Schema.org - Right way to mark the pages
Dear all, Almost since we started designing our site, we are using schema microdata. It is not only because of the rich snippets, but because I want the search engines to better understand what we have. For example, the +1 buttom would not work properly without schema microdata, because it kind of ignores the OpenGraph parameters that specified image and description; and since we are a (very small) local bussiness directory (between other things), all our clients have a hand written schema complient description on their lisings, including address, opening ours, telephone number, description, etc. It is hand written by us because the tools avialable are simply not good enough to cover all different scenarios that a listing can present. I have not use, until today, a proper for the homepage, and it is probably the cause that our page lost the nice links below the site description in the google snippet. I did not place it on the body tag, but near the description, closing it inmediately after the description finishs. Now this is solved and we will wait to see if the links come back in the next weeks. Now to the question. Our site has three sections, with three different systems installed, two running wordpress and a third running another script. the main site is the local bussiness directory. The front page is mark as "schema.org/WepPage", and I do not know how to mark the other pages of the main site. I was thinking of marking the listings as "schema.org/ItemPage" since they are related to specific clients. Would you consired it to be right? Then, we have landing pages for the categories, should they be mark as WepPage, or as an Article, or something else? Many thanks in advance for your help, Best Regards, Daniel

Home page is not the highest ranking page?
Our websites do not have the home page as the first page in the search engines. It's something benign like the privacy policy page or the directions page! I've thought of adding no index to the privacy page, but then the directions or contact page would show up instead of the home page. One odd thing I've noticed, is that on our link to the home page on our menu and footer, the link is /default.aspx?mb=rte. But that shouldn't make a difference and default.aspx should rank first, right? What can we do to fix this?

404 page not found after site migration
Hi, A question from our developer. We have an issue in Google Webmaster Tools. A few months ago we killed off one of our e-commerce sites and set up another to replace it. The new site uses different software on a different domain. I set up a mass 301 redirect that would redirect any URLs to the new domain, so domain-one.com/product would redirect to domain-two.com/product. As it turns out, the new site doesn’t use the same URLs for products as the old one did, so I deleted the mass 301 redirect. We’re getting a lot of URLs showing up as 404 not found in Webmaster tools. These URLs used to exist on the old site and be linked to from the old sitemap. Even URLs that are showing up as 404 recently say that they are linked to in the old sitemap. The old sitemap no longer exists and has been returning a 404 error for some time now. Normally I would set up 301 redirects for each one and mark them as fixed, but there are almost quarter of a million URLs that are returning 404 errors, and rising. I’m sure there are some genuine problems that need sorting out in that list, but I just can’t see them under the mass of errors for pages that have been redirected from the old site. Because of this, I’m reluctant to set up a robots file that disallows all of the 404 URLs. The old site is no longer in the index. Searching google for site:domain-one.com returns no results. Ideally, I’d like anything that was linked from the old sitemap to be removed from webmaster tools and for Google to stop attempting to crawl those pages. Thanks in advance.

What's the best way to sculpt links on a page?
I know PR isn't a top ranking factor anymore, so "PR sculpting" isn't something to focus on. But isn't it still true that having more links that you need on any given page is worse than having fewer, in terms of that page's authority? I'm managing a site that has a lot of navigational links in the footer, which are duplicative because they're almost all included in the top nav bar, and several are triplicated in the sidebar as well. I wanted to remove 85% of these duplicative links from the footer, thinking they diluted the page authority and that most users probably won't scroll there anyway when we launch the site. The site owner is pushing back, though, not wanting to remove so many links because he believes they might be useful to some users. We can test our respective user-behavior theories after launching, but right now I have two questions: Will having a sizable number of duplicative links in the footer dilute the page's authority? and 2) Are there any other ways to reduce this dilution, aside from simply removing the links? (I know nofollow is not the answer, but possibly using iframes or Java or something like that?)
