Redirecting URLS on windows
-
Could anyone help out here please.
A client of ours have reveloped their website from HTML to ASP (helpful!). They have 60 odd pages indexed in Google with the .html extension. We need to do a redirect on these pages so that all link juice is passed to the new pages.
What would be the best way to do this please?

Hi Mister G,
.htaccess files are the means used for creating redirects in a LAMP setup using an Apache server.
To create redirects on a Windows box you need to use a quite different method.
This quick reference chart for creating redirects should give you the information you need for most normal redirect situations.
However, when working with .htaccess we would normally create a single rule that redirects all .html files to the .aspx file of the same name. Ours is a LAMP shop, so Windows is not our forte, but I believe you can do the same thing with the proviso that your server is set up for it. A little hard since I don't know exactly which Windows Server setup you are dealing with, but This link might help you out in doing that.
Hope that helps,
Sha

Gather a list of all the old HTML URL's
Gather a list of all the new ASP URL'sFind your .htaccess file. Edit it and start adding this,
Redirect 301 /old-file.html http://www.domain.com/new-file.asp
for each of the old/new URL's
Hope this helps, more info can be found here. Remember the best way would be to do it the right way!

Domain Redirection
hi all - question we seem to see people ranking better naturally when they have the seo term in their title. Say we were optimising for "red buses". Our company was called Diamond we are using Diamond.co and have a DA of 32 (Page Title Diamond Red Buses | Bla) Should we buy diamondredbuses.co.uk ? Is it best to continue on our domain and redirect? Or move domains? How much would it affect?

City Name in URL structure
I have a client whose site was built when they only served one market, and they now have that city in the majority of their URLs. I'm suggesting we redo the URL structure to remove this location from the main URLs (think homepage, about, etc.) since they have now expanded to three markets. They are seeing a lot of great organic traffic in that original market but are struggling in the new ones they've added so I'm helping to optimize their site. How critical do you think that removing that location from the URL is? I know we would need to implement 301 redirects, but wanted to get thoughts on this.

Language for URLs on new international websites
We are due to launch our new site and it will be targeting an international market. We have setup these new sites in the following way www.website.com/fr/content-goes-here www.website.com/es/content-goes-here This has been done in conjunction with setting up the parameters in GWT and making sure it is optimised for the language itself, and that countries search engine. But our web dev team have said that the URLs at the moment will be in english and not the native language, so if you were on the french version of our site you would see the url in english and not french. Will this negatively affect the site for SEO, and who else would think it would be negative from a usability perspective? Any help is appreciated.

How to Structure URL's for Multiple Locations
We are currently undergoing a site redesign and are trying to figure out the best way to structure the URL's and breadcrumbs for our many locations. We currently have 60 locations nationwide and our URL structure is as follows: www.mydomain.com/locations/{location} Where {location} is the specific street the location is on or the neighborhood the location is in. (i.e. www.mydomain.com/locations/waterford-lakes) The issue is, {location} is usually too specific and is not a broad enough keyword. The location "Waterford-Lakes" is in Orlando and "Orlando" is the important keyword, not " Waterford Lakes". To address this, we want to introduce state and city pages. Each state and city page would link to each location within that state or city (i.e. an Orlando page with links to "Waterford Lakes", "Lake Nona", "South Orlando", etc.). The question is how to structure this. Option 1 Use the our existing URL and breadcrumb structure (www.mydomain.com/locations/{location}) and add state and city pages outside the URL path: www.mydomain.com/{area} www.mydomain.com/{state} Option 2 Build the city and state pages into the URL and breadcrumb path: www.mydomain.com/locations/{state}/{area}/{location} (i.e www.mydomain.com/locations/fl/orlando/waterford-lakes) Any insight is much appreciated. Thanks!

Keyword in URL?
I have a website that has been live for about 8yrs. I do not have any significant rankings for my main keywords but am now starting SEO on my site. I am contemplating changing the url to contain the main keyword prefixed by my brand name. Any views on the ranking benefits and or CTR benefits.

Tool for Generating Sitemap/ URL List
HI, I'm looking for a tool that'll generate a URL list for a site. I looked at this thread here http://www.seomoz.org/q/online-sitemap-generator which came up when I searched for sitemap generator. However, I don't need a sitemap per se, and I don't need to submit it to Google - just a list of pages is what I need.If it updated automatically, that would be useful as well. Anyone know of a tool, on or offline? Or anyone used Xenu and know if it's what I'm looking for? Or is there a simple solution that I'm missing? Thanks.
