How to fix duplicate page content error?
-
SEOmoz's Crawl Diagnostics is complaining about a duplicate page error.
The example of links that has duplicate page content error are
http://www.equipnet.com/misc-spare-motors-and-pumps_listid_348855
http://www.equipnet.com/misc-spare-motors-and-pumps_listid_348852
These are not duplicate pages. There are some values that are different on both pages like listing # , equipnet tag # , price.
I am not sure how do highlight the different things the two page has like the "Equipment Tag # and listing #". Do they resolve if i use some style attribute to highlight such values on page?
Please help me with this as i am not really sure why seo is thinking that both pages have same content.
Thanks !!!

Thanks Justin.
I liked your way of targeting this.
Thanks.

It will almost definitely solve the issue.
If it is any use to you, the approach I would typically take is to concentrate on 10 products and make the content changes to those pages.
These can be top 10 sellers, top 10 products in terms of value, 10 random products etc, re-write the descriptions for each of these and make them live.
I would then run a test crawl to ensure the pages are no longer seen as duplicates, then wait for Google to pick up the changes and see what effect it has on rankings and indexing.
Assuming this experiment is successful start working thru the rest, I find that concentrating on 10-20 products at a time works better for me as its more actionable and easier to work on a smaller product subset.
I hope thats of some use to you

Thanks Justin.
I think we should add some description of the product.
Thanks.

Thank you Matthew.
Google is indexing one page not the other. If I search for "misc spare motors and pumps" it returns one result from EquipNet not the other. Our campaign has almost thousands of duplicate content error, and we need to get rid off them as we are loosing our index in google.
If i can i would definitely try to change the content if possible.
Thanks.

Hey,
Those two pages are not identical but they are nearly identical. I've seen SEOmoz's tool trigger these types of duplicate content before. For example, both page headers and titles are "Misc. Spare Motor and Pumps", both contain nearly the same equipment description, and the same links to the right of the buttons. That is normal on product sites, but that is probably why they are considered duplicated.
When I've seen this happen on my campaigns it almost always follows that Google has only indexed one of those pages and not the other. Is that happening to you as well? Or, has Google indexed both pages (and ranking both pages and sending traffic to both pages)?
If Google is performing okay with these pages (the pages rank for relevant terms and you get traffic), I wouldn't worry too much about the duplicate content errors in your campaign. However, if Google hasn't indexed either page (or one but not the other) you should find ways to differentiate these pages.
To make these pages unique, formatting changes won't do it because the content will still be the same. You would need to add content that is truly unique. For example, you could add a short paragraph about each product to each page. You could make the title tag and header more unique. Or, you could try adjusting your alt text (right now, the alt text on the main image is the same on both pages).
I hope that helps.

Hi Matthew
In Googles eyes these would be duplicate pages as 99% of the text on the page is almost identical.
Google takes a pretty tough line with this, so re-ordering a few words here and there wouldn't solve the issue, to solve the issue you really need to write unique content for each product.
You may want to consider including the product description in the area next to the picture as Google tends to put more significance on text which higher up the page.
Hope that helps.

How do I prevent duplicate page title errors from being generated by my multiple shop pages?
Our e-commerce shop has numerous pages within the main shop page. Users navigate through the shop via typical pagination. So while there may be 6 pages of products it's all still under the main shop page. Moz keeps flagging my shop pages as having duplicate titles (ie shop page 2). But they're all the same page. Users aren't loading unique pages each time they go to the next page of products and they aren't pages I can edit. I'm not sure how to prevent this issue from popping up on my reports.

Partial duplicate content (reviews) on product pages - is this ok?
Hello, we recently received some really good reviews about a range of products we sell (there are normally 8 products in a range). Due to the industry we are in it made no sense to try and get reviews on each individual product within the range as they differ only ever so slightly. So my question is we want to add these reviews to each of the 8 products that lie within each range, but by adding them it would mean that each page has around 600 words of unique product description followed by approx 600 words of reviews that are the same on each of the products within that range. Is this ok? my only other option would be to screenshot the reviews and upload them as images below each product description. If anyone could offer advice here that would be much appreciated. Thanks

Duplicate content pages on different domains, best practice?
Hi, We are running directory sites on different domains of different countries (we have the country name in the domain name of each site) and we have the same static page on each one, well, we have more of them but I would like to exemplify one static page for the sake of simplicity. So we have http://firstcountry.com/faq.html, http://secondcountry.com/faq.html and so on for 6-7 sites, faq.html from one country and the other have 94% similarity when checked against duplicate content. We would like an alternative approach to canonical cause the content couldn´t belong to only one of this sites, it belongs to all. Second option would be unindex all but one country. It´s syndicated content but we cannot link back to the source cause there is none. Thanks for taking the time in reading this.

Duplicate page content
Hello, My site is being checked for errors by the PRO dashboard thing you get here and some odd duplicate content errors have appeared. Every page has a duplicate because you can see the page and the page/~username so... www.short-hairstyles.com is the same as www.short-hairstyles.com/~wwwshor I don't know if this is a problem or how the crawler found this (i'm sure I have never linked to it). But I'd like to know how to prevent it in case it is a problem if anyone knows please? Ian

Strange duplicate content issue
Hi there, SEOmoz crawler has identified a set of duplicate content that we are struggling to resolve. For example, the crawler picked up that this page www. creative - choices.co.uk/industry-insight/article/Advice-for-a-freelance-career is a duplicate of this page www. creative - choices.co.uk/develop-your-career/article/Advice-for-a-freelance-career. The latter page's content is the original and can be found in the CMS admin area whilst the former page is the duplicate and has no entry in the CMS. So we don't know where to begin if the "duplicate" page doesn't exist in the CMS. The crawler states that this page www. creative-choices.co.uk/industry-insight/inside/creative-writing is the referrer page. Looking at it, only the original page's link is showing on the referrer page, so how did the crawler get to the duplicate page?

Duplicate content
I am getting flagged for duplicate content, SEOmoz is flagging the following as duplicate: www.adgenerator.co.uk/ www.adgenerator.co.uk/index.asp These are obviously meant to be the same path so what measures do I take to let the SE's know that these are to be considered the same page. I have used the canonical meta tag on the Index.asp page.

Is this considered as duplicate content?
One of my clients has a template page they have used repeatedly each time they have a new news item. The template includes a two-paragraph customer quote/testimonial for the company. So, they now have 100+ pages with the same customer quote. The rest of the page content / body copy is unique. Is there any likelihood of this being considered duplicate content?
