Block /tag/ or not?
-
I've asked this question in another area but now i want to ask it as a bigger question. Do we block /tag/ with robots.txt or not. Here's why I ask:
My wordpress site does not block /tag/ and I have many /tag/ results in the top 10 results of Google. Have for months. The question is, does Google see /tag/ on WordPress as duplicate content? SEOMoz says it's duplicate content but it's a tag. It's not really content per say.
I'm all for optimizing my site but Google is not penalizing me for /tag/ results.
I don't want to block /tag/ if Google is not seeing it as duplicate content for only one reason and that's because I have many results in the top 10 on G.
So, can someone who knows more about this weigh in on the subject for I really would like a accurate answer.
Thanks in advance...

Thanks for all the info. Last question, does having a list of monthly archives on the bottom of my site hurt in terms of dup content? I just have at the bottom the month/year and when you click it, it shows all the posts in that month. Should I be removing this or does it matter?
-
It would be meta noindex. Yoast is my plugin of choice. Happen to have a little article right here if you need to see if its "safe" to remove them from a traffic standpoint.

I use All in one SEO pack and have checked noindex for the tags and the categories and the archives. I suppose it doesn't make any difference if I do it there or in the robots.txt file. Either way their being blocked. Do you know if there's a penalty for having blocked them in WP and the robots file?
-
I'd say noindex, follow them - many SEO plugins can do this for you, Yoast SEO for example. That way Googs can still crawl them, which may assist with discovery, but won't index them.
-
Exactly what I was looking for. Thank you!
So, I suppose the best and proper way to block it is by robots.txt correct?

You mean "more about this" than me? I run 3 businesses on 3 Wordpress blogs. I've done the research. Many of my clients are Wordpress users. But here's what others think:
- Yoast thinks it's duplicate content: http://yoast.com/articles/wordpress-seo/#advancedseo
- David Fuller ranked for tags then didn't: http://www.seomoz.org/q/wordpress-tags-duplicate-content Same link Dan at Evolving thinks you should noindex tags as well.
- WPMU and Matt Cutts think it's duplicate content: http://wpmu.org/categories-tags-and-how-to-avoid-duplicate-content-on-wordpress/
- How to Tech thinks it's duplicate content: http://howtotechtips.com/remove-wordpress-duplicate-content-search-results-and-tags-from-google/
- As you said, SEOMoz thinks it's duplicate content.
- Many Warriors suggest noindexing tags for dupe content reasons: http://www.warriorforum.com/adsense-ppc-seo-discussion-forum/373744-wordpress-tags-death-me-duplicate-content-question.html
- 3 other pro SEOs say to noindex here: http://www.seomoz.org/q/solving-link-and-duplicate-content-errors-created-by-wordpress-blog-and-tags
Google search shows
_No results found for _"tags do not create duplicate content".
No results found for "tags are not duplicate content".
And 2.5 million results for tags "duplicate content"
The short term answer is that you're ranking for them now so leave them be.
The long term answer is it's duplicate content and you need to fix it.
Even if your tag pages don't show the entire post, multiple tag pages show the same excerpt. This is duplicate content. By itself - not even talking about the post.
**You said: **_SEOMoz says it's duplicate content but it's a tag. It's not really content per say. _
If you want to see with your own eyes the duplicate content, please post a URL.

H1 tag options
Hi, Working on a website and the developer has asked some questions about the h1 tag placement... So the main page has a bold heading named 'Overview' which then has a left hand navigation to tab through the content which appears next to the nav. The main content then has a heading and content below it. The 'Overview' heading appears on all pages of the left nav so really shouldn't be the H1 tag as it would cause duplication. One option we have thought about is to have the right hand heading above the content be the h1, and it has been suggested to stylize the 'Overview' heading but it won't actually be an h1. My question is would this have any negative impact on SEO? Thanks!

Canonical Tag - Magento - Help
Hello, I was hoping to get some help or tips on how to best control the canonical tag on a Magento based website. When you go into the Magento admin and enable the option to use the canonical tag on pages, all that does is input the canonical tag to the exact page just with the http:// in the url. My goal is to use the canonical tag on specific pages and point it to other pages, not just the same page with an http:// For example, right now for page: example.com/question/baseball the canonical tag is pointing to http://example.com/question/baseball What i want is to be able to do is take: example.com/question/baseball and have the canonical tag point to example.com/question/baseballbats Is this possible? Does what I'm saying make sense? Please let me know what you all think.... Thanks!

Schema / microdata under Google listing
I was wondering if it was possible to add any schema, or microdata, or anything of that sort, to my website/webpage in order to show the location of the business just underneath the snippet of the website in Google. I have seen this with other businesses and I am not sure if it is only because they have the business listed on Google Places, or if it is because they have schema data on their website and when it is read by Google it shows underneath their snippet in Google search. Also, if there is an ability to make the address, phone, etc show up underneath the Google search listing, can I do this with a plugin or widget for wordpress? Thank you!

Use of Multiple Tags
Hi, I have been monitoring some of the authority sites and I noticed something with one of them. This high authority site suddenly started using multiple tags for each post. And I mean, loads of tags, not just three of four. I see that each post comes with at least 10-20 tags. And these tags don't always make sense either. Let's say there is a video for "Bourne Legacy", they list tags like bourne, bourney legacy, bourne series, bourne videos, videos, crime movies, movies, crime etc. They don't even seem to care about duplicate content issues. Let's say the movie is named The Dragon, they would inclue dragon and the-dragon in tags list and despite those two category pages(/dragon and /the-dragon) being exactly the same now, they still wouldn't mind listing both the tags underneath the article. And no they don't use canonical tag. (there isn't even a canonical meta on any page of that site) So I am curious. Do they just know they have a very high DA, they don't need to worry about duplicate content issues? or; I am missing something here? Maybe the extra tags are doing more good than harm?

/forum/ or /hookah-forum/
I'm building a new website on Hookah.org. It will have a forum and blog. Should I put them in Hookah.org/hookah-forum/ and Hookah.com/hookah-blog/ or Hookah.org/forum and Hookah.org/blog I think /forum/ and /blog/ are easier for users but am not sure how much adding the word hookah helps with SEO.

Google indexing tags help
Hey everyone, So yesterday someone pointed out to me that Google is indexing tags and that will likely hurt search engine results. I just did a "site:thetechblock.com" and I notice that tags are still being pulled. http://d.pr/i/WmE6 Today, I went into my Yoast settings and checked "noindex, follow" tags in the Taxomomies settings. I just want to make sure what I'm doing is right. http://d.pr/i/zmbd Thanks guys
