Organic Traffic dropped 50%. Anyone want to have a stab at why? (URL listed)
-
Just curious what the pro's on here think is the reason why our site got hammered recently.
The URL is www.jobshadow.com. We've got gobs of quality content that had been ranking for quite a few keywords. Even one from Rand himself http://www.jobshadow.com/interview-with-seo-and-seomoz-founder-rand-fishkin/
Rankings for even the exact match domain keyword 'Job Shadow' have been pummeled. Anyway, we've got a pretty solid link profile I would think.
We also have a very high user time on the site, thus suggesting the organic traffic was engaged when Google ranked us for those keywords.
We have lots of unsolicited inbound links and even recent ones from PBS. I'm not really sure what it takes to please the "machine" at this point. Curious as to what everyone here thinks.

Hey Thomas, thanks for the input. The dictation is a little rough so I'm not 100% sure how to respond. We do have a wide variety of careers on the site, and thus links coming in from a wide variety of sources.
As far as .edu links. We do have a lot of those as well. Colleges see value in the site for their students and link over.
I guess Google sees differently:). If there's no way to help the algo see that then so be it. But if it's something we could do differently I'm all ears. Thanks again.

Thanks Jesse. The only message in GWMT is a notice that my traffic took a big drop. Not a why, just a heads up ha.

I have a guess as to why you can't buy this recent update by Google. You encourage students to always link back to your website regardless more so-called cited. Because web designers or anybody that puts their URL on the footer or in a lot of websites gets penalized and cools gotten Penalized because it is seen as some sort of manipulation especially if he's a real students of any sort and you're putting your URL on their domain that's in edu that's a
that they weren't earned link then
Google has always been very protective of the dot EDU domains and any company having any interest in having links on them. So they will always penalize The company that is requiring a lot of links on the dot EDU site and you clearly state please remember to psych us. All that is fair I do agree to say you have to many people do it it turns into the exact same effect as a web designer it also turns into the exact same fact that is a edu Link scheme. I'm not saying that's what you're doing I'm just saying that's the way that Google's looking at most likely. Probably why you're losing so much traffic. I would definitely think about the relevancy of the student or other persons workplace to your company I know it's jobs and everything like that but This is simply a guess at this point. I'm gonna look over your site and make sure there aren't any errors or anything blocking the Google bought from indexing your site. And if you would let me get back to you in about an hour so I will do this analysis for anything that could be Laurenrae by not allowing the fuck to crawl and let you know about that.
This is a quote from your site below.
PS please forgive any glaring grammar or word issues I have been doing this by dictation on a mobile phone so I sincerely apologize for the mistakes.
Thomas
Hi, thanks for the kind words. Most of the interviews going forward will have people’s names associated with them, as well as their Twitter feed(if applicable) along with a link to their site with some info about them(have a look at the most recent 6 or so interviews). Given the information is found on http://www.jobshadow.com students should continue to cite this as their source(along with any other sources required by the teacher obviously).
That being said, many interviews will continue to be anonymous. We ask financial questions that some people aren’t comfortable sharing publicly(and sometimes people are very candid about other aspects of their jobs). And since we all work for a living getting solid financial data is a must for young people considering careers. Plus we want to keep the interviews uniform in nature so people can know what to expect with each career profile they read.

Yikes. So this happened recently? Say, right around 5/22 ish?
If so, my conclusion has to be a Penguin hit. Have you received any messages in GWMT?
I'm not sure why you'd be Penguined. I just took a peek at your backlink profile and it looks pretty solid. You have a high PR and a decent DA. Although I'm surprised your DA isn't higher with a PR of 5. I see sites with a DA of 49 and PR of 2 all the time... This is confusing to me.
I'm sorry I don't know what to say but I'm curious. Please keep us posted on your findings if it is Penguin related. It would mean there is some other factor that I have yet to consider going into this algorithm..

Drop in featured snippets and sessions following algorithm update
Seemingly following the Feb 2021 algorithm update (passage indexing) our site has seen a massive drop in featured snippets (from 39 on 8th Feb to 27 on 15th Feb) and hasn't recovered (still 27 on 18th March). Our site has also seen a steady drop off in sessions in the UK over the past couple of weeks, despite continued increases in the US. This could potentially be due to the loss of featured snippets meaning less traffic to our top pages, but we're wondering if this could also be another change, separate to featured snippets? Does anyone know if these changes are likely to be linked to the passage indexing algorithm update (or another unconfirmed update) or simply a coincidence and either way, what we can start doing to see our number of featured snippets (and then hopefully sessions) start to increase again? EDIT: As of 22th March, these have dropped again to just 10 featured snippets - a total of 290% decrease - any help would we appreciated! TIA 🙂

Big ranking drop after 12/Jan/2017
Hello, moz users. Has anyone confirmed that keyword ranking dropped since last few days? I've tracked several keyword ranking by Moz and SEMrush and the ranking dropped big time on both tools today. one of the keywords dropped its ranking from 10 to out of SERP. Mozcast has shown high temperature so I assume there is or has been algo update but I would like to know someone encountered the same issue. Thanks.

Drop in Page Indexing, Small rise in Search Queries
Hello, I have a news based website so i am creating multiple new posts daily. I changed a lot of the site and got rid of old potentially duplicate content back in feb and had a sharp drop in pages indexed. I know this was because I removed a lot of pages though. However I still have a good 20,000 + pages on my site and my indexing has dropped a further three times since then. From 9,000 to 2,000 a coupe of months ago and then slowly down since April to just 133. It doesn't seem to have affected my search queries yet but surely will if it continues. I am really confused as to how this might happen & how to turn it around. We dont use any dodgy SEO tricks either.

Domains dominating SERPs w/multiple listings
I know Cutts addressed this as a potential future update to the Google algo but it's driving me bonkers.. My primary targeted keyword has one of our competitors listed 4 times in a row on the top of page 2. Some of the pages have duplicate page titles and the content is relatively thin. The site has a PR of 2 and a DA of 35. Why on earth are they able to suck up a whole half of a results page?!?!?! I don't know that there's anything anyone can tell me that will help, but if there's something I missed about this update please let me know. 'snot fair. 😞

Is there a direct correlation between google places and organic listing ?
Basically, I have examined several examples that the sites which are included in Google places are not listed in organic results in page 1. For example, If my site is listed in google places. is it going to affect my ranking for the same keyword?.

Homepage dropped from Results as I get #1 Local
Today, I noticed for a website I have (www.ghosttoursinsavannah.com) the homepage dropped out of the rankings for only one keyword. This site was previously number 3 for s specific keyword, 'Savannah Ghost Tours'. This keyword is also the keyword most customers search for, by far. Hence my mini-panic. All other keywords (roughly 200 of them) I was previously ranked for are still, pretty much, in the same location rank-wise that they were before. This is for Google by the way. The other thing I noticed is that for many keywords I am all of a sudden the (A) Local Result. I wasn't even on the map previously. Now, the keyword for which my homepage dropped from the rankings, 'Savannah Ghost Tours' is also the 'name' of my company according to Google Local. I haven't had this happen before and am quite confused by it. If anyone can help me understand why this happened and if there is anything I can do to get my organic ranking back, I would appreciate it. The only change I made wasn't even to the site. I did go out and use GetListed to add my company to a number of sites, that is all I have done in the past month. Also, These two things happened the same day, the drop in rank and the promotion to number one position for local. google-rankings.png

Regarding site url structure
OK so there are already some answers to questions similar to this but mine might be a little more specific. OK website is www.bestlifeint.com Most of our product pages are as such: http://www.bestlifeint.com/products-soy.html for instance. However I was trying to help the SEO for certain pages (namely two) with the URL's and had some success with another page our Soy Meal Replacement I changed the site URL of this page from www.bestlifeint.com/products-meal to www.bestlifeint.com/Soy-Amazing-Meal-Replacement-with-Omega-3s.html (notice I dropped the /product part of url and made it more seo friendly. The old page for this page was something like www.bestlifeint.com/products-meal The issue is that recently this new page and another page I have changed http://www.bestlifeint.com/Whey-Milk-Alternative.html I have dropped the "/product" on the URL even though they are both products. The new Meal Replacement page used to be ranked like 6th on google at the begining of the month and now is like 48th or something. The new "whey milk" page (http://www.bestlifeint.com/Whey-Milk-Alternative.html) is ranked like 45th or something for "Whey Milk" when the old page...."products/wheyrice.html" was ranked around 18th or so at the begining of the month. Have I hurt these two pages by not following www.bestlifeint.com/product.... site structure? And focusing more on the URL SEO? I have both NEW pages receiving all link juice inside web site so they are the new pages (can not go to old page) and recently seeing that google has pretty much dropped the old pages in search rankings I have deleted these two pages. Do i just need to just wait and see? According to my research we should rank much higher for "Whey Milk" we should be on the first page according to googles own statements of searchers finding good relevant material. Any advice moving forward? Thanks, Brian
