Thoughts on Proactive Link Disavow
-
One of my newish hobby sites has began to attract some crappy links - as per Google Webmaster Tools, Links To Your Site report. The typical .ru and .pl kind of crap that seems to seep into all somewhat successful sites' link profiles.
I have not received any notifications or penalties, BUT I am considering proactively disavowing these, but wanted to bounce this idea off some other SEOs before proceeding.
Cheers!

David,
I am in a similar situation and considering using the Disavow tool, although there seems to be some folks here who are fearful of it.
Wondering what you ended up doing?
-
Thanks for the reply, Michael. Issue is, these aren't the kind of sites that are easily contactable, and even if I did hunt down contact details, I wouldn't expect a reply from them.

Thanks for the reply and the link, will definitely check it out.

I completely agree with Sheldon. I've been in the position to pre-empt a potential slap by requesting removals (repeatedly) then Disavow. I am no expert but in my opinion as long as there are removal requests as backup and to put in Sheldon's words the pruning is for health and diseased reasons rather than purely ornamental it shows good intent.

David, I've done a couple of proactive pruning jobs and it beats waiting 'til you've been slapped. The comments on that video are mostly uninformed, in my opinion. Disavow has worked for my clients.
You might want to watch this short hangout sponsored by Arnie Kuenn, on the topic. We discussed proactive link pruning as well. http://intrinsicvalueseo.com/googles-disavow-process-and-penguin-recovery/ Feel free to give me a shout if you like.

If anyone else is interested in this topic, Enrico Altavilla pointed me in the direction of this Matt Cutts video, which encourages the practice. The comments are pretty damming, however.

Disavow backlinks
Is there any benefit in requesting manual removal over using the Google disavow file? Or is it just extra work for little result. I.e. is it better to just disavow straightaway and not mess around? Thanks

Using disavow tool for 404s
Hey Community, Got a question about the disavow tool for you. My site is getting thousands of 404 errors from old blog/coupon/you name it sites linking to our old URL structure (which used underscores and ended in .jsp). It seems like the webmasters of these sites aren't answering back or haven't updated their sites in ages so it's returning 404 errors. If I disavow these domains and/or links will it clear out these 404 errors in Google? I read the GWT help page on it, but it didn't seem to answer this question. Feel free to ask any questions that may help you understand the issue more. Thanks for your help,

Easiest way to disavow single links on an on-going basis?
We frequently get random super-sketchy looking blogs linking to us with no author or contact information. I believe we are being targeted by a competitor setting up garbage links to us. I am hoping to use the Google disavow links tool to deal with this but is it: Safe to use or does it flag us as link spammers by using it Possible to use on an on-going basis for single links (as them come in, as opposed to a bunch of backlogged links) Thanks!

Links from tumblr
I have two links from hosted tumblr blogs which are not on tumblr.com. So, website1 has a tumblr blog: tumblr.website1.com And another site website2.com also uses the a record/custom domains option from tumblr but not on a subdomain, which is decribed below: http://www.tumblr.com/docs/en/custom_domains Does this mean that all links from such sites count as coming from the same IP in google's eyes? Or is there value in getting links from multiple sites because the a-record doesn't affect SEO in a negative way? Many thanks, Mike.
