DA as a measure of link-building success/failure?
-
Hi all
What would be a good way to track weather a website is doing good or bad in regards to link-building in google's eyes? Is the Domain Authority the best credential?
If a website is penalized for link-building schemes, would it reflect on the Domain Authority shown in Moz Analytics? What other Moz score would reflect this scenario?
Best regards & Thank you for your help.
Carlos

Depends on the type of penalty. Manual spam penalties almost always target the entire site. Algorithmic filters like Penguin can target groups of specific keywords. Though to an outside observer, it's often hard to tell them apart.

Hi Carlos,
Aside from visibility in the SERPs, look to see if the site is indexed by Google. This is by no means a sure sign, but if you have a site that used to be indexed, and no longer is, it is usually a sign that something odd is going on.
The only way you can ever be 100% sure that a site has had a penalty, is if you get manual action message from Google. The rest of the time, you need to check analytics to see when drops in searches and traffic happened and see if they correlate with a known algorithm update.

Thanks Andy & Cyrus,
So what would one need to look out for; the SEO keyword visibility and their trends?
Also, if a website is penalized, would it be penalized entirely across all keywords or just for the applicable keyword(s)?

Moz data scientists are working on spam scores that will help in analysis, but it's not ready for public consumption yet.
One often used tool for detecting penalties is Searchmetrics Visibility charts. It's not hugely accurate, but can often give you a rough guess: http://suite.searchmetrics.com/en/research/domains/visibility

You will need to use a package that allows you to track competitors. I'm not sure MOZ lets you do that, unless you had a pro account and just used you allocation on your own site and others.
There are lots of tracking apps out there though.

Thanks for that Andy,
How would I be able to take a look at a website's SERPs and also compare it to others?

Hi Carlos,
The best measure of how well a site is doing, is when you look at the positions in the SERPs and how much traffic they are getting.
As far as I am aware, if a site is penalised, MOZ has no way to tell this, so it is not going to be reflected in their own stats (someone correct me if I am wrong here).

Massive drop in linking domains - please advise!
Hi guys! Our site www.carwow.co.uk appears to have been punched in the face by the latest Moz update. It's claiming our #linking root domains has dropped from 225 to 135 and has subsequently hit our DA from 38 to 35. We haven't disavowed any links and our off-site strategy has been going well the past 2 months. Search performance has increased by around 15% (around 5k sessions) and rankings have improved week on week. Any idea if this is a Moz error? That's almost a 50% drop in linking root domains. Thanks, James

ERROR: Too Many on-page links!
User wise, my product menu @LEDSupply.com is user friendly, but I'm concerned that it might be seen by crawlers as bad because of the TOO MANY ON-PAGE LINKS error I am getting in my moz crawl report. Is it really counting all the links in every drop-down menu? If so, is there are resource on how to fix it????

Update in Moz spider/tools?? Flagging duplicate content / ignoring canonical
Hi all, Has there been an update in the SEOmoz crawling software? We now have thousands of dupe content/page title warnings for paginated product page URLs that have correctly formatted canonicals. e.g. http://www.woolovers.com/british-wool/mens/tweed-green/wool-countryman-suede-patch-sweater.aspx ... has following pages with identical content that have been flagged: http://www.woolovers.com/british-wool/mens/olive-green/wool-countryman-suede-patch-sweater.aspx?p=true&rspage=4 http://www.woolovers.com/british-wool/mens/olive-green/wool-countryman-suede-patch-sweater.aspx?p=true&rspage=6 http://www.woolovers.com/british-wool/mens/olive-green/wool-countryman-suede-patch-sweater.aspx?p=true&rspage=4 ..plus 4 more URL's. But they all have canonical set. There's even a notice at the bottom of report that tells us there's a canonical set to http://www.woolovers.com/british-wool/mens/tweed-green/wool-countryman-suede-patch-sweater.aspx What gives, SEOmoz ?? Thanks Michael

Link report that is broken down by C Block?
I've tried to do this in the advanced reports are of Moz, but to no avail. I just want to be able to see all the links (and anchor text would be nice too) for each CBlock.

Does PR & DA not apply to Google?
My PR & DA are much higher than my competitors, but I noticed that they outrank me in some searches. What's up with that?

My domain authority is 1, and I am not seeing any links to my site.
I know that there are links to my site, but nothing shows up. My website is www.mullinsgeoffrey.com. I have tried with and without the www. I am using wordpress for this site, but competitors are as well, and there authority seems fine. is there a hidden setting somewhere that is screwing things up?

Moz tool bar showing less links
Just checked our links for a couple of our sites and noticed that the number of inbound links has dropped from around 55,000 to 13,000 on one and from 6000 to 700 on the other. GWMT still showing the previous amounts. Anyone else experienced this over the last few days?
