Should event write-ups be nofollow?
-
Hi guys,
tl:dr - Should articles discussing a company's event (offline content) be nofollow?
My company hosts a number of events across the year, during which we invite a selection of bloggers, journalists and interested parties from across the UK. During these events we show them the "behind the scenes" of our company as well as the manufacturing process and give them an amazing experience surrounded by our products.
We never (ever) ask for write-ups or links, and leave the day entirely open every time. If people ask about articles or links, we always say it's entirely up to them if they wish to talk about their experiences.
So, my question is: should any follow-up articles (for example reviews of the day, which bloggers will want to talk about) be nofollow? They're not reviewing any products, nor have they been paid or incentivised to talk about their experience.
One could argue the event itself is incentive, however if this is the case then surely providing content is equally incentivising... The only difference is that the content we're providing is offline?
Would be good to get people's thoughts on this!

I believe that that qualifies as promotional--you are giving them a perk that others don't normally get. So, those links should probably be tagged as nofollow links. The post or article that is written should include an explanation that the writer was invited to the event--which would be clear when reading what they posted.
Keep in mind nofollow links aren't always a bad thing--it's logical that your site have both links that have nofollow them and links that don't have nofollow on them. It's ultimately up to the individual blogger or author/site to decide, though, and I wouldn't obsess over these links.

In my opinion, people have been way too quick to slap nofollow on just about everything - out of envy ("do not give them juice!"), out of fear ("I cannot influence that great content on that page - it might change and even be illegal!") or various other reasons.
Would you say you have to nofollow a link given from a football fan who was invited to a VIP lounge for one game (after some raffle or whatever)? Would you say, you have to nofollow links from fair visitors who were given some goodie, enjoyed it and mentioned you with link?
I feel rather strongly about the - pardon my directness - idiocy to slap nofollow on just about anything. In my opinion they belong on exactly two links: those you directly paid for; and those you want to actively distance yourself from.
Then again, the real question might be how google sees those links, their context etc.. If you get punished for those links, I'd think that was a misjudgement - which does not help you in that moment; so if those links look very much paid for ... But as I said: you did not pay or ask for them, they are freely given. Stated generally, I see no problem from those links being just normal links. Let us not forget that there used to be just "links" - and that few people overall have ever heard of "nofollow" and "follow".
Regards
Nico

Event Schema markup for multiple events (same location/address)?
I was wondering if its possible to markup multiple events on the same page for one location/address using the event schema.org markup? I tried doing it on a sample page below: http://www.rama.id.au/event-schema-test/ Google's schema testing tool shows that its all good (except for warning for offers). Just wanted to know if I am doing it correctly or is there a better solution. Any help would be much appreciated. Thank you 🙂

We have 302 redirect links on our forum that point to individual posts. Should we add a rel="nofollow" to these links?
Moz is showing us that we have a HUGE amount of 302 redirects. These are coming from our community forum. Forum URL: https://www.foodbloggerpro.com/community/ Example thread URL: https://www.foodbloggerpro.com/community/viewthread/322/ Example URL that points to a specific reply: https://www.foodbloggerpro.com/community/viewreply/1582/ The above link 302 redirects to this URL: https://www.foodbloggerpro.com/community/viewthread/322/#1582 My two questions would be: Do you think we should we add rel=nofollow to the specific reply URLs? If possible, should we make those redirects 301 vs. 302? Screencast attached. nofollow_302.mp4

Blog Comments & nofollow to follow backlink ratio
Hello I have a website with 2000 nofollow links backlinks and about 20 follow links. It is currently ranking 11th on Google. The websites that are outranking it have lower ranking stats and in some cases only 2 follow links. Most of the nofollow links are blog comments, could this be what is dragging down my stats. The only factor my website is worst on is the number of server requests per load, which is 194 as it is a theme. Blog comments can be very difficult to remove; I created these several years ago before I knew too much about SEO. Most of them are on other websites in same niche. Would I be best to ask website owners to delete my comments or restart on a new domain. Thanks Rob

How do I add "noindex" or "nofollow" to a link in Wordpress
It's been a while since I've SEOed a Wordpress site. How do I add "nofollow" or "noindex" to specific links? I highlight the anchor text in the text editor, I click the "link" button. I could have sworn that there used to be an option in the dialogue box that pops up.

Old massive site, should I nofollow all out going links?
The company I work for is in the process of rebuilding our entire website profile. Our biggest site, FrenchQuarter.com ranks pretty well for our main term "French Quarter Hotels" And we use that to drive business directly to our hotel businesses. The site is very old and one I inherited, rebuilding it won't be a priority for another 9 months or so. This site act's as a bit of a directory for the city. There are links everywhere and it's probably passing link juice to a lot of businesses scott free. In the mean time would it benefit or hurt us if I went through and no-followed most of the links? Would nofollowing links help frenchquarter.com to rank any better than it does? And could I then direct some of that link juice directly at our hotel websites to boost those as well? My goal is to get our hotel websites to rank 1st page, we get exposure in the locations pack, for 2 of our 5 hotels, but placing below that is impossible with all the competition from the OTA's (expecia, bookit.com, etc) Seems near impossible no matter what my backlink profile looks like. Thanks for any feedback, Cyril

Nofollow and ecommerce cart/checkout pages
Hi!! Another noob question: Should I be nofollowing my site's cart and checkout pages? Or as SEs can't get to the checkout pages without either logging in or completing the form is it something I shouldn't worry about? Have read things saying both. Not sure which is correct. Thank you! Appreciate the help. Lynn
