301 a website to mine within a subfolder
-
Hey there Mozzers,
I have purchased a very amazing Social Media Related Plugin. I already have a business website about digital marketing which pretty much falls in the same category.
I am thinking of transferring that plugin into a subfolder of my own website.
Is there anything I should keep in mind when I do that?
-
I am using Wordpress for CMS.
-
Without the CMS I will guess WordPress.
Move to or add subfolder (if needed)
MAKE A BACK UP I like blogvault.com , vaultpress.com & sucuri.net backups
This url shows you it all.
for moving back to root I KNOW IT IS (mostly great tools you will need anyway)
http://askwpgirl.com/move-wordpress-subdirectory-root/
https://codex.wordpress.org/Giving_WordPress_Its_Own_Directory
use
https://generatewp.com/wp-config/
/* Custom WordPress URL. */ define('WP_SITEURL','http://example.com/blog'); define('WP_HOME','http://example.com/wordpress'); define('WP_CONTENT_URL','http://example.com/wordpress/wp-content'); define('UPLOADS','http://example.com/wordpress/wp-content/uploads'); define('WP_PLUGIN_URL','http://example.com/wordpress/wp-content/plugins'); define('COOKIE_DOMAIN','cookies.example.com');
just plugins
See: https://yoast.com/smarter-upload-handling-wp-plugins/
add_filter('upload_dir', 'my_upload_dir'); $upload = wp_upload_dir(); remove_filter('upload_dir', 'my_upload_dir'); funcion my_upload_dir($upload) { $upload['subdir'] = '/sub-dir-to-use' . $upload['subdir']; $upload['path'] = $upload['basedir'] . $upload['subdir']; $upload['url'] = $upload['baseurl'] . $upload['subdir']; return $upload; }
rel=canonical and how to 301 to subfolder
In Settings > General, change the address of your site but not the address of WordPress. For example, if you've been working on the site at
example.com/development
, change the settings as follows:- WordPress address (URL):
http://example.com/development
- Site Address (URL):
http://example.com
Click the Save changes button and move on to the next steps before trying to access your site.
Copying the Files
Using FTP or CPanel file manager, copy (don't move) the following files from your WordPress directory to the root directory:
index.php
.htaccess
, if you have one. If there isn't an.htaccess
file (and the fact that you've turned off pretty permalinks means you're less likely to have one), don't worry about creating one—just skip this step.
Editing index.php
Edit the
index.php
file that you've moved. You could do this by:- editing it in situ after the move, using an FTP client or cPanel file manager
- downloading it from the subdirectory, editing it and then uploading it to the root directory—instead of making a copy
The edit you need to make is to one line at the end of the file. Find the line that reads as follows:
| 1 |
require
('./wp-blog-header.php)
|Change it to:
| 1 |
require
('./subdirectoryname/wp-blog-header.php)
|So if you've been developing in
example.com/development
, just change the line to:| 1 |
require
('./development/wp-blog-header.php)
|Save the new
index.php
file.Create Redirects
Use this tool to generate redirects from your old permalink structure to the
/%postname%/
permalink structure.Your Redirects
Add the following redirect to the the top of your
.htaccess
file:RedirectMatch 301 ^/https://www.yoursite.com/subfolder/([^/]+)/$ https://www.yoursite.com/https://www.yoursite.com/subfolder/$1
RedirectMatch 301 ^/https://www.yoursite.com/blog/([^/]+)/$ https://www.yoursite.com/https://www.yoursite.com/blog/$1
See: https://yoast.com/change-wordpress-permalink-structure/
Use: https://yoast.com/research/permalink-helper.php/
&
https://yoast.com/wordpress-seo-url-permalink/
I hope this helps,
Tom

Restructuring Areas of a Website
Hi We are changing the structure of 2 areas of our site but the URL's won't be changing. We're effectively removing the first category level as it doesn't make much sense: Current structure Cat 1 - http://www.key.co.uk/en/key/cupboards-lockers Cat 2s - http://www.key.co.uk/en/key/lockers & http://www.key.co.uk/en/key/cupboards Cat 3s... New structure will look like Cat 1's http://www.key.co.uk/en/key/lockers & http://www.key.co.uk/en/key/cupboards Cat 2's.... etc The top category 1 doesn't rank for much & the level 2's perform better anyway. Will moving the structure change rankings even though the URLs don't change - just what is assigned to them in the back changes I know if the on-page content changes, things may be affected, but we're minimising this as much as possible. Thank you

What is the difference between Multilingual and multiregional websites?
Hi all, So, I have studied about multilingual and multiregional websites. As soon as possible, we will expand the website languages to english and spanish. The urls will be like this: http://example.com/pt-br
Intermediate & Advanced SEO | | mobic
http://example.com/en-us
http://example.com/es-ar Thereby, the tags will be like this: Great! But my doubt is: To /es-ar/ The indexing will be only to spanish languages in Argentina? What about the other countries that speak the same language, like Spain, Mexico, etc.I don't know if it will be possible develop a Spanish languages especially for each region. Should I do an multiregional website or only multilingual? How Google sees this case? Thanks for any advice!!1 -
One website, multiple service points
Hi all Wondering if anyone could offer an opinion on this..am talking to a new client who offer kitchen installation and design. They have a central headquarters and cover a 100 mile radius of their location. A lot of search terms they are aiming to target - Kitchen Design, Kitchen Fitters etc offer localised results. This is where my issue lays. I have worked with plenty of clients in the past which have physical presence in multiple locations and have marked up the site so that the site ranks for each of the stores, but trying to make one site appear in many locations where it doesn't have an address is a different issue completely. Not only do they only have one address, they also only have one phone number. We will target, as best we can, the non localised keywords but need to work out what to do to cover the locations 20/30/40 miles from the office which they cover. I welcome any opinions on this please.

Same website, seperate subfolders or separete websites? 12 stores in two cities
I have a situation where there are 12 stores in separate suburbs across two cities. Currently the chain store has one eCommerce website. So I could keep the one website with all the attendant link building benefits of one domain. I would keep a separate webpage for each store with address details to assist with some Local SEO. But (1) each store has slightly different inventory and (2) I would like to garner the (Local) SEO benefits of being in a searchers suburb. So I'm wondering if I should go down the subfolder route with each store having its own eCommerce store and blog eg example.com/suburb? This is sort of what Apple does (albeit with countries) and is used as a best practice for international SEO (according to a moz seminar I watched awhile back). Or I could go down the separate eCommerce website domain track? However I feel that is too much effort for not much extra return. Any thoughts? Thanks, Bruce.

Moving Content To Another Website With No Redirect?
I've got a website that has lots of valuable content and tools but it's been hit too hard by both Panda and Penguin. I came to the conclusion that I'd be better off with a new website as this one is going to hell no matter how much time and money I put in it. Had I started a new website the first time it got hit by Penguin, I'd be profitable today. I'd like to move some of that content to this other domain but I don't want to do 301 redirects as I don't want to pass bad link juice. I know I'll lose all links and visitors to the original website but I don't care. My only concern is duplicate content. I was thinking of setting the pages to noindex on the original website and wait until they don't appear in Google's index. Then I'd move them over to the new domain to be indexed again. Do you see any problem with this? Should I rewrite everything instead? I hate spinning content...!

My websites position has dropped, any ideas why?
Hi, First off im new here, so hello to everyone. Now to the reason why I have joined. I am currently trying to rank for 2 terms: **UK Bank Holidays 2013 (Term 1) **and Bank Holidays 2013 (Term 2) The page which im trying to rank these terms on is: http://www.followuk.co.uk/bank-holidays Now some background history: On the 29th Dec 2013, term 1 was 5th and term 2 was 7th - rankings achieved through guest blogging. Last night I changed the h1 tag from 'Bank Holidays 2013' to 'UK Bank Holidays 2013'. Re-worded the meta description to try and increase the CTR. And removed the term 'Bank Holiday' from the end of each sub-heading - Ex: 'New Year's Day Bank Holiday' to 'New Year's Day' - I did this because I felt it was to much so in total 'Bank Holiday' term had been removed from 5 sub-headings. Ok, so I went into WMT and resubmitted for indexing, over night the page got reindexed - the term 'UK Bank Holidays 2013' stayed at the same position (5) BUT the 'Bank Holidays 2013' term dropped into hell at roughly position 250. I'm thinking of changing everything back and crossing my fingers that term which dropped comes back BUT maybe im being to rash and it might jump back as the page stands. I did a grade test using SEOMOZ and both terms generate a grade of 'A'. Has anyone got any ideas? Sorry if the thread is a bit messy im currently crying all over the keyboard as im typing. Thanks
