SEO expert for site

Hey guys,
I am looking for an SEO expert for my website. I have talked to a couple different people, but since I know nothing about it, it is hard for me to get a good read on whether they know what they are talking about or not.
The main keywords are in the sports betting industry, which I believe to be a highly competitive space. Any advice, suggestions, or recommendations?

With lack of information, you should certainly ask for references, portfolio of work, etc. Have them provide you with a basic outline of what they recommend and how they are going to move forward, and get a second opinion.
In the end of the day, find someone you trust and you believe you can rely on them, from word of mouth, reputation, and references. It's like going to a doctor, you don't know the information yourself, but you know you have someone you can rely on due to their expertise.
I would also recommend getting a basic knowledge of SEO - you can read the beginners guide here on Moz. There are lots of great resources to get an elementary understanding so you'll be more educated and capable of guiding the SEO company you work with.
If all else fails, take some of their recommendations and ask here on the forum or on similar sites what the community thinks about the recommendations and advice you've received.

What is the best way to boost no. of quality sites linking in?
Analysing my site ranking compared to competitors, I see that our weakness is getting others to share our content and link into it via their own blogs and social media - although I would say our social media activity is pretty good. We have also worked on getting listed free on relevant sites related to our product area (learn spanish in spain) in order to increase sites linking but this is still minute compared to our 2 main competitors. (As a note: paid listings are not totally justifiable for us at this point in time but perhaps in the future we will expand on this). Am I missing something here?

In what ways would an affiliate site be okay with Google?
I know Google has slammed affiliate sites hard. But affiliate marketing can be a real business and had an idea for one, but I would like to know if ALL affiliate sites are looked at as evil in Google's eyes, or if it's just those with thin and duplicate content in the product descriptions. I know they want brands to come up ahead of affiliates of that brand, and that makes sense. If I sold Acme Widgets products, Acme Widgets itself should come up ahead of my site. But what if the site sold widgets in general, with the term widgets not a branded keyword? If all product descriptions are unique and well-written content, on a site that is high quality, would it still be downgraded by Google just because there are affilate links in it? I guess overall the question could be boiled down to, are affiliate sites hit because they have horrible content or because they have links to affiliate programs in them?

Yahoo Directory VS other established sites
A fellow SEO consultant and I have been arguing the importance of listing on established well-known directories (Yahoo, DMOZ, etc) these days. He is convinced that the $299 listing on Yahoo is a worthy investment, while I think that advertising on high-ranking niche websites (in the form of purchased listing) are far more useful. When looking at Y!Directory, a lot of the links are placed on pages that have PA of 0 (these are very deep URLs, almost a dozen levels in). Does Yahoo Directory's DA of 100 help offset this low PA score? What if you could get a listing from a highly relevant niche site with a DA of 70+ and PA of 30+ for the same price? Obviously there are other likely benefits to links from relevant sites (such as real customer acquisition) but I would like to know from a pure SEO point of view - are links from directories like Yahoo's still worth the link?

Shopping comparison site referral traffic growth
Over the last 12 months we have been working with affiliates and seen excellent traffic and revenue growth from this channel (golf market). Over the same period we have seen a massive (60%) drop in organic traffic and 40% drop in organic revenue. Our rankings are comparable to last year. However we are seeing growth in Googlebase traffic and direct traffic Is it the case that consumers are using comparison sites more that organic search queries. Traffic down on site on regular intervals
Hi, We are running a sort of large affiliate website, with having 2000 web pages. We are having unique content, metas and related on every page. The problem we are facing is we are not gaining traffic constantly. We have some top rankings for sometimes few days, for few weeks and for few months. But suddenly we went few pages behind on serps, we loose all our ranking. After some time it will come again on serps as natural positions. Due to this after year of hard work on content, meta and many more small small issues, we are on the same no. of visitors. Given below are the my site traffic details with attached image. We used SEOMOZ Pro tools to evaluate all the possibilities and errors we are doing, We found lots of bad things happening our site, We started work them on since early January and which achieved the corrections as per the image of crawl diagnosis summary page shown below : we are not having sitemap on our site and having some soft 404s, but we are working towards it.
