Wordpress Pages vs. Posts
-
When building a blog to promote a particular affiliate offer, I usually like to use a static "page" homepage and then have my posts displayed on another part of my site. I've noticed that my wordpress pages almost always rank higher than wordpress posts and I can't explain it...
Here are some possibilities I've thought of:
- XML Sitemap priority is set at 60% for pages and only 20% for posts
- My main navbar lists the pages which consequently means they get linked to on every page on my website.
- Some other phenomenon within the wordpress framework...
If it helps, I use Thesis v1.8 on all my sites.
I guess my ultimate question is: If pages do in fact rank higher than posts, is it worth it for me to go back and change the site structure on all my blogs which are using posts instead of pages. I know making major modifications like that can be disasterous but will it ultimately pay off?
Thanks

All good advice. No difference between pages and posts. It's all about how they're linked to.
For #1, if your pages are linked to in the nav bar, from every page on your site, that would explain them ranking higher than posts that aren't as well linked-to.
If you're relying on category links, your posts will be 3 levels down, at http://yoursite/category/yourcategory/yourpost. You can improve this with a plugin or some code to strip out the /category base, to get http://yoursite/yourcategory/yourpost -- but that's still 2 levels down. Best to link directly to important posts -- from the home page, or a well-targeted page, as in #2.
Thesis has a sidebar widget to show the latest posts from a category. These are direct links. If the widget doesn't fit your design, you can do it with a line or two of PHP.
If you want to link from a targeted page, as in #2, Thesis has a field to add text/html to a category page, turning it into a regular page with a list of posts. But you'll still have that pesky /category base, unless you strip it out with a plugin or some code.
You can also add posts or a category page directly to the Thesis nav bar, which lets you link to whatever you want.
Unless there's a compelling reason not to, always set your Wordpress permalink structure to just %postname%

I would imagine it's your linking structure and internal anchor text that affect it. As far as WP goes pages vs posts should not mean anything to Google as you can completely tweak the URL structure...etc to the point where it cannot figure out what's what. Have you tried implementing an auto-parse internal link tool? It gives great control over how pages are interlinked.

It would seem its your linking that os the problem, ppages linked from every page are going to rank better. You should look into link sculpting and decide on a linking statagy for your site

In my opinion there is no difference. Why you have this situation?... Consider things like:
1. How old is the page, links pointing to page (posts), maybe you have more links pointing there? And site structure. Often posts are accesible from your homepage or from categories, however each page you have (like About Us, etc.) like you mentioned is linked from every single document on your blog, posts are not...
You could change your each post to page and have them listed same way but it's not the point....
2. Consider creating special pages, where you can manually asign and lists more important posts... so each of that page will be optimized for keywords you want and contain posts about the same topic... however do not create to many of them and yes... they would be similar to "category" pages, but you would have more control inside.
Oh, had to edit cause forgot to actually answer, I wouldn't change posts to pages... as in fact there are just the same, just because of the side structure may seems different.

Unsolved What should I do with WordPress Blog homepage
Hi, I have a large WordPress blog with thousands of posts. By default, the blog homepage contains the excerpt of each posts. As there are so many posts, the homepage is paginated(Totally 1341 pages) I use siteliner to check and find a lot of duplicate contents on the blog homepage. So, what should I do with it? Should I noindex the homepage and all the paginated pages accordingly? Thank you

Will it upset Google if I aggregate product page reviews up into a product category page?
We have reviews on our product pages and we are considering averaging those reviews out and putting them on specific category pages in order for the average product ratings to be displayed in search results. Each averaged category review would be only for the products within it's category, and all reviews are from users of the site, no 3rd party reviews. For example, averaging the reviews from all of our boxes products pages, and listing that average review on the boxes category page. My question is, will this be doing anything wrong in the eyes of Google, and if so how so? -Derick

Inventory Pages that are Sold, 404 vs 301?
I am working with a company that sells high-priced automobiles. Each Unit has its own URL We currently leave most sold inventory live on the site as it draws in many leads (the units are visually shown as sold, so it shouldn't be a UX issue in most cases). We are wanting to start pruning some old units (this is in WordPress - custom post type) and I'm not quite sure what the best solution for this site is with removed units. Some ideas: Remove the units pages that are no longer needed, resulting in any links 404'ing to a useful 404 page. Remove the units pages, and 301 them to the Homepage (I don't really want to do this, as it seems like really poor UX) Remove the units page, and 301 the user to a specific "This item has sold" page that is shared by all sold units, but may not be the sites full 404. another option I haven't thought of? I dont' want to do anything that would confuse or get search engines upset, and I'm not sure how bad 404's are, I see some info on how bad they are, some that say they aren't bad. I'm guessing it is as usual, some gray area in the middle.

Sub-pages have no pa
I took over a website a few months ago which is not performing well at all for chosen keywords. When I first inspected it, I found a rel canonical tag pointing to the homepage on every page. This was quickly deleted and all the pages were fetched in webmaster tools. 3 months later and the website is still performing badly. When I use the mozbar, it shows that all of the sub-pages have a pa of 1. It is only a small site and all of the pages are linked to on the navbar in a simple way. The links are not made using javascript and all the pages are on the sitemap which is submitted to wmt. I have checked that all of the changes that have been made have been indexed as well. Could it be possible that google still sees the canonical tag even though its not there? I can't think of any other reason why the pages have no pa or why it is so far behind the competitors despite having better content and links. Also, the site is appropriate for adults, but I found (among the mess left for me) a meta ratings tag set to "general". This has now been deleted, could it negatively affect rankings?

Changing the url of a page
Hello. I would like to change the url of a page. It currently has very few inbound links. I would set up a 301 redirect to the new url. Is there anything else I should take into account before changing the url? Is there a downside to changing a url? Do inbound links carry the same value when a 301 redirect is involved? Thank you!

Spammy keywords on a page
My client's website has a box of text on each page that is spammy and horrible to read and stuffed with keywords. The text boxes are there only for search engines as they mean nothing to humans. I say remove them as it must be doing more harm than good. However, my client is scared to remove them as the text has been there on each page for ten years and he is worried about a drop in visitor numbers if they are removed. Is he right to be worried?
