Bug in Virtual Page view javascript
-
I am trying to learn the basics of tracking outbound links with this javascript code set up on
this url
http://queenofhats.com/links.php
I think I have a bug in my javascript that tracks clicks on an outbound link.
When A person clicks on the "Portland Maine" link, in theory it should create a virtual pageload of a page called "portland_maine".
I have clicked on the link, but when I filter on "portland" in the Top Content section of Google Analyitcs, there are is no record of the click.
So I think my javascript code has a bug.
Any comment on the javascript would be most welcome.
I just noticed that I have \ before /links.
Is the "" the source of the problem?
Thanks!!

Hi Guillaume:
I made the correction you suggested. See code below. I believe that because there is PHP on the page, that I Must keep the / before the ' marks. Correct?
I think that If I remove the / marks, that the web page will not render correctly in PHP becuase the ' mark is special character in php.
When I look in Google anlaytics under "portland" I see no page views.
So can you suggest what I need to change?
a href="http://www.portlandmaine.com" target="_blank" onclick= _gaq.push(['_trackPageview','/links/portland_maine']);">http://www.portlandmaine.com
Thanks!!

HI Guillaume:
Thanks very much for going to my web site and identifying the key point that I now have the new async version of GA on my site. So I have to use the new version of page tracking.
Good catch!
Merci
Dan

Hi Dan,
Yes, you're partially right, the "" is part of the problem, but there is also something else. I went and took a look at your website and you seem to be using the asynchronous version of Google Analytics code so the pageTracker won't work for you.
If you were still using the old version of Google Analytics, the code should be :
Now, with the new version of Google Analytics tracking code :
Best regards,
Guillaume Voyer.

Virtual Pageviews vs. Destination URL for Goal tracking
I am working on setting up goal tracking. Currently when we receive a new signup, the person gets sent to their dashboard homepage and this is not a valuable a goal tracking destination. My suggestion was to build a "Welcome" interstitial page to send a user to when they create an account. Our tech team suggested using a Virtual pageview instead as it is their thinking that a "Welcome" page adds little value. Is there any downside to using Virtual Pageviews with regards to goal tracking?

Has anyone experienced Google Analytics track the page visit to a "thank you" page, but not the goal conversion?
Has anyone experienced where Google Analytics would track the page visit to a "thank you" page, but not the goal conversion that should result? The goal had worked for a long time as it is as just a goal url with head match. No funnel. Not case sensitive. For about four days now, no conversions have been recorded, but Google Analytics shows hundreds of people visited the page that should trigger the goal. Additionally, we have received the hundreds of leads. A Screaming Frog search shows the code is embedded throughout the site. For the interested, the GA code looks like (and the 8 Xs are the correct number on the site): Am I missing something?

Can I view lost links?
Hello! One of the blogs I'm tracking has literally lost like half of the number of external followed links. So, I have two questions really 1) is that common at all? it seems odd that that many would be removed 2) is there a way to see the specific links that were lost? Thanks!

OSE shows URLs redirecting to our custom created error page, is this a problem?.
When I check the link metrics for my product pages in OSE, it shows a message saying that the page redirects to our custom error page. This page was recently created to display when there is an error with the website. Do I need to be concerned that OSE is seeing all product pages as redirecting to this error page? Will it affect page authority etc,? I have attached a screen shot of the message that OSE displays for reference. YWbpM.jpg

How do I find out how well a page converts in Analytics
Hello All, I am looking to find out how well a page converts in Analytics. A simple request you would thing, but no! First off let me list what I don't want to know: I don't want to know the conversion rate of a product I don't want to know the conversion rate based on the landing page What I want to know is how many people click to add the product to their basket on a particular page (which I understand is not strictly the conversion rate, but whatever). So the ways I have tried unsuccessfully are: The Analytics overlay (the in page Analytics thing) - this doesn't work because the "Add to Basket" button is not a link, it is an input. The Navigation Summary - this doesn't work because most of the time the /shopping_cart.php URL doesn't come up in the short list, and if you search for the URL in the search box beneath the percentages get all skewed. The most obvious solution would be Event tracking but I can't get that implemented in the short term. So does anyone have the answer to this most curious of conundrums? Thanking you in advance, Rich

Too Many On-Page Links
I'm getting the warning of "Too many on-page links". I have a number of affiliate marketing sites, all Wordpress, all with sidebars. In the header navigation bar is a link that offers "reviews" and links to each product/brand. This is not a drop down link but leads to a page with product links. Also, in the sidebar I have links that also lead to the products/brands. Redundant yes, but in the beginning this seemed to be a good practice in site design. It would be easy to simply remove the widget that contains the link process in the sidebar. The problem may simply be that the sidebar is the same for every page in the site(s). Is this hurting total SEO as my sites are all over 95-percent indexed. One site in particular does very well in traffic and sales so is removing these links potentially going to improve my SEO and ultimately by success? Thanks, Don
