301 redirect Issues
-
my clients site is www.greenbayharvest.co.uk
When you enter that URL it redirects to www.greenbayharvest.co.uk/shop, dont ask why, thats the way they set it up and thats what im stuck with.
So, how do i resolve the 301 issue here.
we want all things to point to www.greenbayharvest.co.uk, in terms of SEO but does the fact that there is a redirect going to /shop make this an issue?
we appear to have:
www.greenbayharvest.co.uk/shop
all these URL's go to the same same page so what is the best way to correct this?
thanks for any help on this
Lee

Yes and No, i dont think that these redirects are directly harming your seo but having a home page on the base url does help in terms of allowing visitors to feel comfortable.
I think the main issue that could harm your seo is that perhaps that you or someone else in the past or future has built links pointing to your home page which does not exist. If you are going tyo keep it as is then the priority needs to be on this extension of your domain and flow out to the rest of the site.
Hope this makes sense.

Hi Lee Changing the redirects to www.greenbayharvest.co.uk would be an easy task to some extent. Firstly, you would need to see how the redirects are being handled...if this is done within the cpanel of the domain or by a component within the website platform or by the HTACCESS file in folder of the domain. Be very careful with HTACCESS if you don't know what you are doing. I would take a guess and say that this was done via HTACCESS. If so , you are looking for something along the lines of # Redirect old file path to new file pathRedirect /olddirectory/oldfile.html http://example.com/newdirectory/newfile.html Simply edit this ad redirect it back to the main url that you have chosen. In this particular case, you can redirect all the url's to the url you want.I hope that this helped you out.

an update on this.
greenbayharvest.co.uk 301 redirects to
www.greenbayharvest.co.uk which then 301 redirects to
www.greenbayharvest.co.uk/shop
is this hurting SEO and if so what should be the correct procedure?

301 Redirect question www to root.com
I have a site that has been up for a few weeks now and is currently in a www format and i am considering changing it to just mydomain.com I also have quite a few directory listings (including google places/bing) for this site w/ the www. url. If i do this, change it in my google analytics, and update my wordpress internal page + htaccess file. Will i lose any of the link juice i had from my www pages? Would this be something that would be advised since i've registered for many sites, or is there a potential that this could end up hurting me? Thanks,

Redirects
Hello, My question is: how important is it to wait for the a redirect to get seen and cached before you take down the old page? More in depth: my old platform has seriously limited my ability to add sitemaps and make edits to htacces. I just want to change nameservers (which will delete everything on there) and upload the htaccess is that alright? Another way of saying it: when redirecting a page, is it necessary for google to see the old page before it is deleted? Thanks Tyler

301 redirecting some pages directly, and the rest to a single page
I've read through the Redirect guide here already but can't get this down in my .htaccess I want to redirect some pages specifically (/contactinfo.html to the new /contact.php) And I want all other pages (not all have equivalent pages on the new site) to redirect to my new (index.php) homepage. How can I set it up so that some specific pages redirect directly, and all others go to one page? I already have the specific oldpage.html -> newpage.php redirects in place, just need to figure out the broad one for everything else.

Minisites - 301 Redirect or Links to Main site
Not sure whether this is considered black hat or not but I know it is done and I would like to know which is the most effectrive method. If you were to acquire multiple sites in the same niche to your main site (either by buying existing sites or perhaps registering expired domains) which already had strong aged backlinks, is it better to either: a) 301 the new domain to the main site (or a subpage perhaps) b) create 'minisites' on the new domains (trying to mirror the URL structure of the previous incarnation if possible to scoop up and remaining inbound backlink juice, on seperate IPs to the main site as well) and then place several links to the main site & subpages. Would the decay of link juice through 301's mean you lose benefit that way or is it the same as a normal link? Would the 301 method mean any IBL's into URL's other than the homepage be lost? The homepage of the minisite will likely have 4 or 5 internal links so will this dilure the effect of the links to the main site? Thanks in advance!

Crawl issues/ .htacess issues
My site is getting crawl errors inside of google webmaster tools. Google believe a lot of my links point to index.html when they really do not. That is not the problem though, its that google can't give credit for those links to any of my pages. I know I need to create a rule in the .htacess but the last time I did it I got an error. I need some assistance on how to go about doing this, I really don't want to lose the weight of my links. Thanks
