Product microdata from Schema.org

An article (http://www.websitemagazine.com/content/blogs/posts/archive/2011/11/18/step-up-your-e-commerce-seo-game-with-product-microdata.aspx?utm_source=newsletter&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=newsletter) is claiming that using this product micro data (http://schema.org/Product) might help product pages rank better.
Do you have any experience using these tags and would it be worth the time to implement these on a site with 1000's of products? Would it make sense to selectively implement them on specific products that actually have a good chance of ranking high instead?

I have not placed the code on my site yet but Google seems to be figuring some formats out without the code as I see bulleted lists, dimensions and prices displayed for some of my pages. Even if this data does not improve rankings it might improve your clickthrough rate - especially if you have a kickass price or provocative product bullets displayed.

I am not sure what advanatge microsodat give you at this time, but if i were a search engine, and someone searched for "buy nike shoes", I would much rather return a complet nike shoe object, complete with price image, description and ther rest, rather then just a reference to nike shoes in a web page somewhere.

We implemented the Schema.org microdata format a few months ago and have seen no strong correlation which suggests using these tags would increase your rankings in the search results. I speculate it's not so much a ranking factor but more of a signal that tells search engines, "Hey, this is the exact price of our product named XYZ potion."
To answer your question though, the tags are "nice-to-have" but not necessarily a "must-have" and implementation is completely contingent on how your business prioritizes your SEO projects. For example, if you have other issues to take care of such as 404 detection & handling, content generation, link acquisition, etc. I would put those at the front of the queue (I think Vanessa Fox would agree).
Afterthought: Search engines are very smart nowadays and long before Schema.org was announced, our competitors had pricing rich snippets in the search results even though they didn't use the tags.

Ctr question with home page and product pages
do you believe that the advantage of targeting a search term on the home page is now worse off than before? as I understand it ctr is a big factor now And as far as i can see if two pages are equal on page etc the better ctr will win out, the issue with the home page is the serp stars cannot be used hence the ctr on a product page will be higher? I feel if you where able to get a home page up quicker (1 year instead of two) you still lost out in the end due to the product page winning on ctr? do you think this is correct?

Hi all, When we search for top tools or software like "top cms systems", we can see Google listing some companies in boxes. What these results are called? I know search snippets are different. Should we use brand name of product in URL
Hi all, What is best for SEO. We sell products online. Is it good to mention the brand in the product detail page URL key if (part of) the brand is also in the home url? So our URL is: www.brandXstore.com Is it best to do: www.brandXstore.com/brandX-productA.html of just do: www.brandXstore.com/ProductA.html Thanks for quick answering 😉

Could we run into issues with duplicate content penalties if we were to borrow product descriptions?
Hello, I work for an online retailer that has the opportunity to add a lot of SKUs to our site in a relatively short amount of time by borrowing content from another site (with their permission). There are a lot of positives for us to do this, but one big question we have is what the borrowed content will do to our search rankings (we normally write our own original content in house for a couple thousand SKUs). Organic search traffic brings in a significant chunk of our business and we definitely don't want to do something that would jeopardize our rankings. Could we run into issues with duplicate content penalties if we were to use the borrowed product descriptions? Is there a rule of thumb for what proportion of the site should be original content vs. duplicate content without running into issues with our search rankings? Thank you for your help!

Ecommerce good/bad? Showing product description on sub/category page?
Hi Mozers, I have a ecommerce furniture website, and I have been wondering for some time if showing the product descriptions on the sub/category page helps the website. If there is more content displayed on the subcategory, it should be more relevant, right? OR does it not matter, as it is duplicate content from the product page. I think showing the product descriptions on non-product pages is hurting my design/flow, but i worry that if I am to hide product content on sub/category pages my traffic will be hurt. Penalty for Mixing Microdata with Metadata
The folks that built our website have insisted on including microdata and metadata on our pages. What we end up with is something that looks like this in the header: itemprop="description" content="Come buy your shoes from us, we've got great shoes."> Seems to me that this would be a bad thing, however I can't find any info leaning one way or the other. Can anyone provide insight on this?

Has anyone starting using schema.org?
On the 3rd June 2011 Google announced that they are going to start using Schema. Do you think this will change the way search engines find content, from briefly looking at Schema I'm concerned that the proposed tags could just turn into another keyword meta tag and be abused. Have you started using this tags yet and have you noticed a difference?
