Link building, does query string matter?
-
Hi All, We have some partners which link to our site, and they put "?ref=SITENAME" so we Can identify the source of the link....but does this matter to the search engines? Does this count as a different page than the one without the query string? -Rasmus
-
Yep. Remember to do the same in Bing's webmaster app too.
-
I have just checked GWT, and we had over 7000 pages with the ref string.
So I have changed the setting for this query string, telling Google that it does not affect the content of the page. That should be it right? From now on the Google should regard http://www.betxpert.com?ref=XXX as http://www.betxpert.com right?
-
Canonical will work yes, but I think it will be quicker and easier to change handling of the query parameter in gwt and bwc. If you use other query parameters canonical might be best.
-
As far as I can see in GWT, I have pages with the "?ref=XXX" which gives me pages with the same meta descriptions and titles.
So you are saying that using canonical this would help it?
If i am missing link juice to my home page because of this reference I really want to fix it

Hi
I think you're asking a question about duplicate content, and Google possibly indexing more than one version of the same page?
To avoid this from happening, add the canonical tag to the head of all your pages;
Each canonical should contain the original URL for each page. This will avoid indexation of the same page multiple times.
Jassy is likely correct, that the engines know how to ignore referral parameters, but you should have a canonical in place in most cases anyway.

Google and bing probably are ignoring them (you can check how they're being handled if you look in GWT or BWC at how parameters are being handled). To be 100% sure, tell bing and google to ignore the ref parameter.
I'm assuming you only really care about bing and google.

I am getting links on people's wordpress blogs but are not showing up on the just discovered tool. Is it true that wordpress links are no-follow links that do give off any link-juice?
A blogger told me that "wordpress.com does not allow blogs to show advertisements or use links to sites that sell merchandise of any kind" is this true? Am i wasting my outreach time trying to get links from wordpress operated blogs?

Do you stop link building once you have your desired rank?
So with all these updates hitting sites left, right and center. Now you have your desired rank on Google, do you stop link building for that project? I can see some positives in this You will not add links that will get hit by future updates. If you do get hit in future updates you have less links to remove. Obviously it an outstanding link came along from BBC or CNN you would go for that. But press releases etc would you now stop anything like that?

Does the trailing slash really matter in terms of passing link juice?
Does the trailing slash matter? Say my website resolves to: link to: http://www.domain.com/ So if a user went to link to: http://www.domain.com it would 301 them to link to: http://www.domain.com Then does a link to: link to: http://www.domain.com**/** pass the same amount of link juice as a link to: http://www.domain.com ?

Backlinking / Link Building Services
Hello, Our site is struggling organically and one of the key factors (not surprisingly) is a lack of backlinks. We have hired a content writer and are working on a content strategy to generate quality, relevant backlinks. But this is more of a long term project. After reviewing backlinks to our competitors' sites, it seems clear that they are using agencies or services to generate backlinks (most coming from low quality sites). I'm aware that this isn't a good long term strategy (although it seems to be serving them well at the moment). I was hoping the community could provide some insight on products or services out there that provide "safe" backlinking strategies. I don't want to do anything that is going to harm us in the future. I've read a bit on the hoth, and it seems fairly safe and potentially effective, but it's hard find much objective advice on the topic. Any insight is much appreciated - thanks in advance! Jason

How much Link Building?
I'm wondering how much additional directory links to a site, on a monthly basis, would be too much, and potentially seen as too manufactured in Google's eyes. I am referring specifically to good quality, or relevant, directory links, nothing very spammy. I know there is no specific number, just wondering what the consensus is. Would a 10% monthly increase in linking root domains generally be considered too much? 5%? Thanks for your input!

What's the typical response time to link building email requests?
Hello Forum, We're about to embark on a link building campaign and were curious about how long, on average, it takes to get a response to an email requesting links to our page. We're trying to come up with a timeline estimate for our campaign. Thanks
