Limits to 301 in htaccess?
-
I'm about to launch a redesign of my company's main website, and we've updated most of the URLs to be more user friendly and SEO optimized. I've just finished editing my spreadsheet, and see that I'll need to implement 244 redirects.
My question is: Are there performance issues with loading your .htaccess file up with almost 250 301 redirect commands? I've heard a bloated htaccess file can really slow down apache, should I be approaching this a different way, maybe with php?

Ryan,
as long as you don't use more then 1 redirect per page not one browser will coze problems.
I had a problem with htaccess once beceause i redirected more then 1 variation of a page to the same new page and that generated errors in Safari, Mozilla and Chrome but not IE 8.x..
You should be fine for now.

I agree with this response.
250 redirects is a modest number. I have sites with 1000's that have no problems.

Ryan,
htaccess is the best way to go. The truth is it could potentially slow down your site due to the many server requests applicable. 250 is not too bad. However there are alternatives you can consider for speeding up your site.
(1) If your site has other aspects which are slowing down the site, why not improve on those elemtn
(2) Host your sites assets on a CDN, makes your site alot faster.
(3) If your old pages have very low authority use regex and redirect them to the relevant category page, rather than mapping them to the alternative new page. I wouldn't recommend this unless you really have time restrictions.
Make sure you however update the broken links for the old page to the relevant new page for both internal linking & external linking purposes.
Hope this helps.

301 redirects for all urls - legal dispute
The website in question is a very high traffic website with substantial credibility in it's subject matter (sorry, can't share more details) that delivers an overwhelming majority of traffic from SEO, much of which is new visitors. A legal dispute has resulted in both parties agreeing to forward a percentage of the total URLs to alternative websites (only 1 website for each party). All URLs for the domain will be forwarded elsewhere. It does not make sense to me that the "sum of the parts" will be as strong once the redirects are implemented but I am looking for feedback. It is fair to say that the alternative domains of each party are no where near as strong as the domain being "parted out." Will the SEO juice be distributed to each domain in full? Will both parties lose out substantially? Feel free to ask for clarifications and I'll do the best I can given the legal parameters. Thanks.

404 vs 410 vs 301
Hi guys, I am managing a real estate website, and obviously we have a LOT of pages detailing each property. As those properties get sold and removed from the website, I'm wondering how best to handle this - I know 404, 410 and 301's are all valid ways to go, but I want to provide the best UX combined with the best SEO effect. My thinking is to customise a 410 page to show the page has been permanently removed, and has a relevant message (rather than a generic 404 message) and shows a search box - possibly pre-populated according to the page they were looking for.

I think this gives a good UX and helps Google to understand the importance of the 000's of pages on our website.
I'd also like to clear property detail 404's as quick as possible to make it easier to see if we have problems elsewhere on the site. Having explained this to our development/SEO agency, they are strongly pushing for 301 redirects or leave as 404.
I think 301's would be the worst for UX, and as explained earlier, the volume of 404's is massive and makes it difficult to see real errors. They seem to think this is a better UX and better for SEO. Just wondering what you guys would recommend?0 -
When to break a universal 301
Hi all IN Jan of this year our company re-branded and in doing so we changed the domain of our website. So as to transfer the domain authority from the old site to the new we implemented a global 301 from the old domain. So far our old domain still ranks as 41 but new domain as 38. Unfortunately due to old SEO agencies black hat activities we received a Google penalty on the old domain. We managed to remove the penalty after removing as many spammy links as possible and we also submitted a disvow notice for links we couldn't remove. My question is, is the new domain being harmed by the global 301 from the old domain? And if I remove the 301 from the old domain and let the new site stand on its own could i be faced with rankings disaster? All thoughts welcome! Thanks

Link juice and 301 redirects
Hi, I have a page with a lot of links going to it. I want to change the name of the page (thereby changing the URL). I can do a 301 redirect, but does a 301 send the "link juice" to the new page? The page in question is www.aerlawgroup.com/dui.html, and I want to change it to www.aerlawgroup.com/dui-lawyer.html. Thank you in advance for your time.

301 re-directs to similar content, good idea?
We need to remove about 50 articles from our site, and we can find similar content to re-direct these to. Would it be a good or bad idea to re-direct this content? Or should we just 404 it? Should a 301 re-direct always be an exact match?

When is it safe to remove 301 redirects?
I have created over 500 301 redirects in my .htaccess file, some of them are more than 2 years old now. Should I delete them? I don't like seeing the "notices" number in crawl diagnostics so high 😞

Difference between URL Rewrites and 301 Redirects for Rankings
What is the difference between URL rewriting and 301 redirects? Specifically if my home page is rewriting the www. version and the /index.html version rather than 301 redirecting them is this equivalent? Does it still pass the link juice on those alternate variations the same way a 301 redirect will?
