Open site explorer result discrepancy
-
Hi all,
I'm a little confused - when using open sites explorer to view of link stats on one of our competitors site I get conflicting results.
For example -
Page Specific Metircs shows the url www.xyz.com has 265 external links.
But
Root Domain Metrics show they have 22,687 links
Yet the total links at the top of the report says Total links 999
Can someone explain why www.xyz.com has 265 external links and the rot domain (which is the same) has 22687 links?
I've also run the report on xyz.com rather than www.xyz.com which yielded no results.
Thanks in advance
-
Will do, thanks again.
-
I see what you mean, i cant work it out, try thr feedback tab on the side and ask SEOMoz, they will either explain it or fix it.
-
Sure - I'll pm you it as these questions show in serps themselves.
-
You maybe right, if you can give us a url i will take a look.
-
Just tried this and there are no other subdomains listed in google other than www. Beginning to suspect the results shown in open site explorer are not correct.
-
Yup - tried that and no difference.
-
If you havn't tryed it, there are options above the results, change the "to" feild from 'this page' to 'pages on this root domain'.
That should give all the links to your root domain.
-
Gotcha, thanks again.
-
do a search in google for site:xyz.com, you may see some different subdomains.
You would expect that eitehr xyz.com or www.xyz to have the majority fo links, but it may be there have another popuular subdomains, like forum.xyz.com
-
Thanks for the reply Alan
Thats what I thought but when I rerun the search on just xyz.com it just says no results. So how do I view all these over 21k odd links?
-
Root domain means all domains that end in xyz.com. not just www.xyz.com
that could be admin.xyz.com, sales.xyz.com, xyz.com, www.xyz.com
but total links should be the highest

Open Site Explorer Twitter Stats
Hi, I have just noticed something within Open Site Explorer. On the page it says it draws the Twitter stats from tweetmeme. I have just noticed that tweetmeme have shut down. Their new product datasift seems to do the same thing, but can someone confirm if SEOMoz is drawing data from them now, or is the current twitter data shown not fully up to date. Its not a major issue, its just something I noticed. Thanks Rich

How do I retrieve crawl and ranking data about a site from the past?
Hey. One of my main clients has asked to see the crawl data and rankings data for the past eight months. He wants to have tangible evidence of the effects of Penguin. I would like that info too. Is it possible to retrieve that information on a weekly crawl and ranking basis through SEO Moz and if so, how do you do it? I simply want to show a graph, timeline and brief explanation across several main keywords... Help me as you guys always do - You rock Best Ben

Our recently searched Open Site backlink reports are identical to last months across multiple clients. Why is this happening?
When processing the backlink data of our clients for this month (searches done on 28th December), we're finding that the information gathered from Open Site explorer is identical to the data that was found on searches done at the end of November. It appears to have happened for the reports we use for every single client so it must be more than a coincidence. From our perspective, it's almost as if no data has been tracked since the last time we gathered backlink reports. Could you help us get to the bottom of this?

OPen Site Explorer listing criteria?
Checking link data for a potential client who has given me access to their websmaster tools account, I've noticed that Google list over 150,000 "Links to Your Site" but yet OSE only reports a tiny fraction of this number.
Moz Pro | | G-DC
I have manually verified that there are in fact direct links from the sites that are listed in Webmaster Tools but not in OSE. Does OSE discard some links? Is there a reporting lag? Does anyone know why there would be such a large discrepancy?0 -
Handling long URLs and overly-dynamic URLs on eCommerce site
Hello Forum, I've been optimizing an eCommerce site and our SEOmoz crawls are favorable for the most part, except for long URLs and overly-dynamic URLs. These issues stem from two URL types: Layered navigation (faceted search) and non-Google internal search results. I outline the issues for each below. We use an SEO-friendly URL structure for our product category pages, but once bots start "clicking" our layered navigation options, all the parameters are appended to our SEO-friendly urls, causing the SEOmoz crawl warnings. Layered Navigation :
Moz Pro | | pano
SEO-Friendly Category Page: oursite.com/shop/meditation-cushions.html Effects of layered navigation: oursite.com/shop/meditation-cushions.html?bolster_material_quality=414&bolsters_appearance=206&color=12&dir=asc&height=291&order=name As you can see the parameters include product attributes and page sorts. I should note that all pages generated by these parameters use the element to point back to the SEO-friendly URL We have also set up Google's Webmaster Tools to handle these parameters. Internal Search Function:
Our URLs start off simple: oursite.com/catalogsearch/result/?q=brown. Then the bot clicks all the layered navigation options, yielding oursite.com/catalogsearch/result/index/?appearance=54&cat=67&clothing_material=83&color=12&product_color=559&q=brown. Also, all search results are set to noindex, follow. My question is: Should we worry about these overly-dynamic and long ULR warnings? We have set up canonical elements, "noindex, follow" solutions, and configured Webmaster Tools to handle our parameters. If these are a concern, how would you resolve these issues?0 -
Open Site Explorer Missing URL's
I see a link to my site on a couple different url's, but they are not listed in OSE. The links have been active for a long time too. Does OSE not track all inbound links from all sites? Thanks, Stephen

Domain authority decrease after open site explorer update. Reasons?
Hi! I just noticed a decrease on our domain authority and also the page authority of several of our pages on the SeoMoz toolbar. For instance, DA went from 34 to 29. I was scared and confused, so I went to check it on the opensite explorer and saw that it had been updated. I want to ask you guys if the same happened with your metrics or is it just us. Because the strange thing about it is that we have been doing some good optimization work lately and also some linkbuilding, and actually our SERP’s have been improving in general, and some specific ones have been performing great. Our website is http://www.inmonova.com as a reference. Can anyone cast some light into this?
