What's Happened To OSE's External Links For My Site?
-
Hi,
I'm just taking my first steps with Open Site Explorer. I've hit a problem that I'd be really grateful for some help with.
I'm running a website (that I didn't create) and want to get a clear picture of the inbound links. When I enter the URL into the OSE search bar, there are no external domains listed under the 'Inbound Links' and 'Linking Domains' tabs. Only internal site links are registered.
Setting the filters, "only external" + "pages on this root domain", under the Inbound Links tab, does bring up a list of external sites. But I haven't had to enter filters just to see a list of inbound links with any other sites. Also, the breakdown under the Linking Domains tab remains the same - only links within my site are shown.
Does this ring a bell? Any ideas what I might be doing wrong, or what might be wrong with my site to cause this problem?
Cheers for helping,
Josh

If there don't seem to be links to other pages either, could it occur when links are in a different format, e.g.
http://countymotorworks.co.uk/

Thanks for bearing with me!!

They are going to other pages on the site but not to the homepage
-
Ok, thanks Kenny.
You've answered my question, but as a follow up: How do links accumulate for a root domain but not for a homepage?
Many thanks,
Josh

It looks like there aren't any external links pointing to your homepage but if you filter to pages on this root domain there are a couple dozen.
You will probably see some more links appear in the upcoming Mozscape Index update.

Hi Kenny,
Thanks very much for your response and suggestions.
I wasn't sure how necessary the URL would be. Here it is: http://countymotorworks.co.uk/
I'll take another look over the help (this is probably user error!). But if you get a mo to run a quick test with the URL that would be awesome.
Cheers!
Josh

Hi Josh,
Without knowing the url that you are looking up it's hard to say what the issue is. If you don't want to post it publicly here you can create a support ticket and send it that way. Also, you might want to check out the help documentation for Open Site Explorer to get a better understanding of the tool.

Have a great day!

What's more valuable: new content or optimizing old content
We are a niche legacy print publication that's been around for close to 20 years. Recently, we combined several old sites in one new responsive site. We have over 7,000 articles -many of which are evergreen and can be repurposed when needed. Most of the old pieces although published, have not been optimized for SEO. However, as we create new pieces, we optimize them for search and social and they tend to get more organic traffic. Where we're torn is on how much we should balance our limited editorial resources between cleaning up and optimizing our extensive archive to improve our organic reach, vs. pumping out new original pieces each week. I realize that without a lot of data the answers will be varied - I guess I'm looking for a best practices approach for content publishers. If it helps at all, our main conversion goal is selling subscriptions to our print and digital publications. We know that organic traffic tends to be more engaged than our social referrals. Unfortunately, due to the nature of the magazine fulfilment business, it's tough to know which channels convert better. Thanks!

Why is Link Count smaller than Internal Links in Crawl Test report?
We recently ran the crawl test report and for most of our pages we are getting 1150 internal links but 40-50 as the link count. Why is there such a big disparity?

What's the best way to switch a campaign from sub-domain tracking to root domain tracking?
I realized after the fact that one of my campaigns also has a mobile website sub-domain that I'd like to track (ex: http://m.website.com). How can I switch this campaign over to root domain tracking without deleting everything and starting over?

Moz's customer service. Is this normal?
A few days ago I noticed an issue with the on-page optimizer, when I couldn't find a solution, or even any mention of the problem in the forum I posted a ticket at the help desk.
Moz Pro | | Abidos
After ten hours I got a generic reply that didn't answer my ticket so I posted saying so.
After two days of not getting any reaction I looked through the forums again, this time searching for reactions about Moz's help desk. I found the post saying that sometimes the mail with a reply isn't received correctly so I went to the page of the ticket.
Here I saw that not only didn't I get an answer but my issue had been marked as solved, even though my last message clearly stated that it wasn't. This was three days ago. So my question is, is this how Moz usually treats it's clients? I'm new and my free trial is about to expire. At this point Moz should be impressing me with their great tools and services, convincing me it's worth my money. If I can barely get their attention now I don't expect it to change once I have payed them.0 -
Why do some sites have a higher Page Authority than Domain Authority in OSE??
Hi, I have noticed when using OSE and enter a domain you very often see a higher Page Authority than Domain Authority. If someone could explain why this would happen then I would be very grateful - its my current understanding that page authority would ALWAYS be LESS THAN Domain Authority but that is not always the case (I have seen cases where PA is more than 10 higher then DA) Here's an example where PA > DA http://www.opensiteexplorer.org/links.html?site=www.primelocation.com Thanks

Your opinion on this opportunity's difficulty?
I'm building a tool for mechanical engineers, and I'm trying to find 10 low-competition keywords to target in my first few content marketing efforts. I've got a lot of maneuvering room, so (with a bit of expert advice) I bet I'll be able to find some low-hanging fruit. Here's what I've found: Most keywords are seem to have about 40% difficulty. What's the highest level of SEOmoz "keyword difficulty" that a new website should reasonably try for? Some ranking high-authority pages are don't appear to be targeted at the term Is it fair to say that I could beat any page with less than a 'C' ranking for on-page optimization? (Assuming I target the term with general best practices)* Thanks! If you're interested, here is my current process: Go on engineering blogs for keywords Use Wordstream's Keyword Suggestion Tool for ideas around it Use Google Keyword Tools for keywords above 50 searches in direct match Use SEOmoz Keyword difficulty report, looking more deeply at keywords under <50% If I can find a top 10 page that's less than 30PA and less than 40DA, or has less than 'C' ranking for on-page optimization, I consider the keyword achievable within 3mo, using general best practices. *Except for YouTube/Wikipedia/etc

How do you track links over time?
I'm new to SEOmoz and I'm really enjoying the fact that I can track all my keywords in a single place and monitor the changes. Is there a way to do the same with no my links? I mean: I'm using Open Site Explorar to track my links, but I want to know my link building performance overtime. Is there a way to do this automatically with SEOmoz? In case of a negative answer, how do you track your links over time? Thanks in advance!
