Need Help writing 301 redirects in .htaccess file
-
SEOmoz tool shows me 2 errors for duplicate content pages (www.abc.com and www.abc.com/index.html). I believe, the solution to this is writing 301 redirects
I need two 301 redirects
1. abc.com to www.abc.com
2. /index.html to / (which is www.abc.com/index.html to www.abc.com)
The code that I currently have is
...................................................
RewriteEngine On
RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} ^abc.com
RewriteRule (.*) http://www.abc.com/$1 [R=301,L]Redirect 301 http://www.abc.com/index.html http://www.abc.com
......................................................
but this does not redirect /index.html to abc.com. What is wrong here? Please help.

I don't recall why, but I don't think you can use a full (absolute) path for the first part of a "Redirect 301" statement Could you try just:
"Redirect 301 /index.html http://www.abc.com"
Typically, the rewrite command (with flag of "R=301") is much more flexible. The "Redirect 301" syntax has some limitations - it's easier to use, but it only covers a few, simple situations.

Oh yeah, sorry. The case I was thinking of was when you wanted to detect >everything< (e.g. abc.com/afjsk.htm) and redirect it. If you're only concerned with one case (index.html) Ally's solution is better. Remember that for individual cases you'd have to make an entry for each one (index.htm, index.php, default.htm) if those are becoming issues as well, which I doubt they would be in your case.

I'm not a hundred percent on this-but am interested to see what everyone else thinks-So be patient:
I think it should appear as follows:
RewriteEngine On
RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} !www.abc.com$[NC]
RewriteRule ^(.*) $http//www.abc.com/$1 [L,R=301]or
Redirect 301 abc.com/index.html http://www.abc.com
Make sure you save your.TXT file with the correct name and to the correct location. I hope this helps. If I have this wrong anyone I would love to know the correct way myself.
Thanks,
Ally

I believe you need to have a wildcard at the end too; right now the expression is stopping searching at abc.com instead of looking past it. This is the one I use I think (going from memory) for a similar situation:
RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} ^www.abc.com(.*)$ [NC]
The (.*) means 'everything' as a wildcard

Is 301 redirect the only way when using Vanity URLs?
We have been using vanity urls for some of our pages. Mostly the pages that have a vanity URL have a long URL length. But now the problem is, the vanity URL is getting displayed on the search engine when the particular keyword related to the page is entered. I checked the google search console, the vanity URL is indexed and the original URL remains unindexed. What should I do? Is adding 301 redirect to the vanity URLs are solution? Since some of vanity URLs are not redirecting to the original. Some of the original pages are not getting traffic. Also, can using canonical tag help?

301 Redirect domain with penalty
Wondering if I could get a few views on this please... I have added an affiliate store to a domain I own, however I forgot to noindex the product pages which were duplicate content of the merchants. Despite a good deal of backlink building the site will not do much in the engines at all, doesn't even come up on the first few pages for it's own name! This suggests to me that I have a duplicate content penalty. Try as I may I cannot get it removed so am thinking of cloning the domain to a new domain, however, I do not want to lose the links I collected so I am planning on 301ing them. While I will not get all the link power moved over, I should at least get credit for some of them which will kick start the new domain. Can anyone forsee any potential issues with doing this? Is there a danger of 301ing a site with a penalty that the penalty would be carried over? I know there is no penalty on the links, no WMT warnings etc, it is the content causing the issue. Thanks, Carl

Broken links shall i put them in my htaccess file to generate juice
Hi, when i had to rebuild my website after my hosting company made an error, i lost over 10,000 pages and lost many thousands of links coming to my site. What i want to know is, instead of trying to recreate those pages again which would take me a long time, should i put them into my htacess file and have them point back into my site. so for example, if i have a link coming to my site to an article which could be, holidays in benidorm are not selling well, would it be a good idea to have that link pointed at the main benidorm section which is benidorm news. And if i had an article which was people are finding it hard to lose weight, instead of writing a new article could i have the link pointing to my health section? If this is the correct way of doing it to grab back some link juice, would it slow my site down and how many links could i put in my htacess file. So what i am trying to say is, if i put in say 1000 redirects into my htaccess file, would it slow my site down and is this a wise thing to do or should i just let the links go.

Could a URL change path conflict a 301 redirect?
Hi Mozzers, We create multiple pages for one of my client. Some of them are replacing old pages. I setup 5 of them out of 40. I was able to set them live via the drupal CMS. The new pages were actually published but didn't have any URL but had nodes in directory such as www.example.com/node298. To set them live i changed the url path to one page that already existed( www.example.com/old). In order to setup the replacing page: www.example.com/node298 i added the same name as the old one but in order to avoid URL conflicts with new page(www.example.com/new) I had to change the old page's url path as well such as www.example.com/old2) I know i have to 301 redirect the old to the new obviously but my question is: does a URL path change on the old page www.example.com/old matters in when 301 ing it? will it still transfer all the juice to the new page Visual Process: Main goal: www.example.com/old redirect to www.example.com/new but these two are exactly the same url So modification of URL path: www.example.com/old to www.example.com/old2 to avoid URL conflict Therefore www.example.com/old2 =www.example.com/old (just url change path difference) Question: Because of this url change, will a 301 from www.example.com/old2 to www.example.com/new will still carry all the juice that www.example.com/old carried or not? I hope i didn't make it too confusing. Let me know if it is the case Thanks Mozzers Ty

301 redirects & merging two sites into one
We have a client that has two sites that rank well for different searches in their market. The main pages ranking are things like advice articles and news pieces. For various reasons, they just want one site. I believe they need to duplicate the content from the outgoing site and place it on the main site, with a 301 redirect from each old page to each new one. What happens when they eventually want to redirect the entire domain? Would these smaller, internal redirects become obsolete, therefore removing any link value they once had? I am not sure how this works or if there is a best practice way to do this. Thanks Gareth

301 Redirects
Last year we merged 3 websites into 1 website and launched the new site in February. When developing the new site I created 301 redirects for all the pages from the old sites to the new site. Unfortunately when the new website was created the URLs were not optimised for search engines. I now need to optimised the page URLs. In theory I need to create new 301 redirects from this existing pages to the new optimised URLS. I am concerned that in a few years I might end up with a string of 301 redirects and if I break some links I might loose some ranking. How many redirects will link juice work for? I hope I'm clear here, if not I've attached a image showing what I'm doing. Thank you. unledfh.jpg

301 redirect: Old pages to new
Hi, We have recently made some changes to our agency site. Looking in webmaster tools we have identified a number of old pages with existing link juice. Not a great deal mostly 32/100 PA. There are a mixture of URLs "meet the team" and people pages etc. The anchor text on the majority of pages is our brand name. Could we now 301 all these pages to one page, or is this a no no in the eyes of Google? Any help greatly appreciated. Best Regards Sean
