Website Building: Best practices for SEO and user interaction
-
I'm a noobie when it comes to SEO, with my knowledge coming from a few books and blogs. What are some of the best practices that you use when building a website for SEO and for user interaction? I've read about the following, but am not sure if they are still relevant. Also if you have any other suggestions, they would be appreciated.
-Phone # above fold line.
-A call to action above fold line on each page
-An HTML sitemap
-Terms & Conditions (supposed to create credibility in Googles eyes)
-NAP in the footer of each page
-Optimize each page for 1 unique keyword
Are these correct and is there anything else that I'm missing?

I read in the article that Google takes into consideration, the popularity of your page. This meaning that your website has a very low bounce rate.
I run a photo booth rental business for weddings and other social events. One of the features that comes standard with every package is that all of the photos from the event are hosted on an online photo gallery. We currently give the guests a business card at the event with our website address and on the website they can click a link that takes them to their online gallery, which is hosted on www.smugmug.com.
I wanted to see if there is a way that we could keep the traffic/visitors on our website longer vs. sending them to www.smugmug.com. I also would like to see if there is a way that they can incorporate social media sharing, such as Google+ to share our website with their friend and family.
It seems that with the online gallery it's a great way to drive traffic to our website and also take advantage of social media platforms. However, I just can't put finger on how to best go about this.

Thanks, just spent the last hour and read the entire article. Very easy to read and just enough info to get me started.

This is probably the best place to start : http://www.seomoz.org/beginners-guide-to-seo
I am not a big fan of HTML sitemaps , I would rather put my effort in to internal cross linking from content and an xml sitemap which is submitted via web masters tools
You might also want to look in to using schema.org to markup your Phone # and address ( if you use them )
If you are using address , you might also want to look in to GeoSitemaps

You should also have an XML Sitemap, make sure your site is search engine friendly, meaning careful with javascript and flash.
Make sure you have alt descriptions for images.
Depending on your site you can have more than one keyword optimized per page but don't go over board.
Loading time is important. Less than 5 seconds is important.
Create lots of unique quality content for your site and market them heavily on all social networks.
Create a Privacy Policy
Links in footer are not a good idea.
Hope this helps.

SEO for international bloggers
Hi I'm brand new to SEO stuff, and I'm trying to monetize my blog. I have a Q from you about optimizing my blog for an international audience. So I thought where is better to ask my question 🙂 My q is: Does the country that you are living in and publishing your post affect your SEO if you blog in English? For instance, if I live in turkey, but I publish my whole posts in English, will Google hesitate to show my content to an English audience? In other words, Does the publishing source country make it harder to contest with native English bloggers for google's page 1? Thanks in advance for your attention

What is the best tactic to fix thousands of product descriptions on an eCommerce site?
I've asked this to dozens of people already, but I still haven't found a satisfactory answer... perhaps someone here can help me: I keep hearing how important it is to update product descriptions to avoid duplicate content, decrease thin content and improve conversion rates - but for any new eCommerce sites like ours, with thousands of listings going up at once, this is nearly impossible to control. Outsourcing is clearly a bad idea from an SEO standpoint as well as a UX standpoint... But are there any other options? Should I let go of my other responsibilities and focuses as an in-house SEO manager and virtually stop, drop and roll out unique product descriptions? That would be a project that would take me at least a year to complete. Do I just give up? Do two descriptions a day and hope for the best? What do you guys think? What have you recommended for others? I can't imagine our company is alone in this dilemma. Thanks in advance! Hanna

What is the Best Practice for External Links?
We are currently in the process of reviewing our site on a number of fronts, and part of that involves adding quality content to our product category pages where necessary. Our practice so far has been to add relevant content, and in this content externally link to a couple of relevant, related sites for that category (avoiding the use of keywords we are trying to rank for). Should we be doing this (externally linking)? And, if so, should these external links be NoFollow? So far, we have seen mixed results for our efforts.

Using testimonials to build quality content
I don't see a lot of talk on here about using testimonials to build good content. From what I have seen, the search engines love client testimonials. I haven't found a good service provider for this yet. I'm thinking something combined with Twitter or FB that also allows you to show the content on your site would be great. Can anyone recommend a service like this? I'm checking out a service called, "Quick Vouch" but I haven't tested it yet.

What is the best way to remove old pages (if at all)?
Hi, I have a client who has thousands of pages on his site - 50,000+. It is a news website so most of these pages are old news articles and blog posts that receive very little traffic. We are moving to a new content management system and are debating on whether or not to keep all that old content. So far our decision is to keep the content that has gotten at least 100+ visits from Bing or Google in the last 6 months but dump everything else. This amounts to around 30,000 or so pages most of which have several links pointing to them. My question is from an SEO standpoint is that okay to do? We'd not only lose pages but links as well. Part of me thinks that in light of the Panda update getting rid of old content that is good but not great could about help out the site (we do great in the SERPs and actually got a bump in traffic after the Panda update to new articles/posts). However, we obviously don't want to cause problems and that is why I'd appreciate the thoughts and ideas on the best way to handle this major downsizing in content. Thanks!
