How can you avoid duplicate content within your own e-commerce website
-
One of the e-commerce websites I am working on is giving me a lot of duplicate content errors because all of the products are the same, just different sizes.
Does anyone have any ideas how to fix this problem or should i just ignore it?
Someone in the office brought up the idea to just use an i frame for all product descriptions.
Any thoughts would be much appreciated.

Short and sweet answer
- rel canonical the pages where you sort by ( siz, price , etc ) even for product you classify by color .( more reading )
- If the pages are split up in to separate pages add rel=prev and rel=next to them ( more reading )
-
We are talking five pages - this isn't going to get you penalized. Please consider my suggestion above. You must know why someone would buy the small versus large size and you can write we recommend this size for people looking for best value and who have this type of requirement etc...

In that case i would rel=canonical to one version of the product, preferably the most popular size.
I'm not sure about the system you have used to create the site, but you could potentially have single page with a drop down allow users to select the sizes/flavours etc which updates the price on the fly.

There is no way I can create 1 page for all of the products. They already have different flavors and all the prices are different. I can definitely stress the sizes for title and meta tags, but unfortunately all of the directions are the same, descriptions for product flavors the same, and customer benefits are the same. If you guys want take a look at the website it is www.petsspark.com. And here is the link to the products http://www.petsspark.com/Tear-Stain-Eliminators-s/1822.htm

The easiest solution when the products are the same but different sizes is to rel=canonical to one of the sizes from the duplicate pages of differing size options.
The best solution however is to create one page with all sizes on the page, this is a bit more difficult to do as requires some programming, design etc. but it is worth the effort from both an SEO and UX perspective
check out the folloowing article for info on rel=canonical

You need to stress the different sizes in the Title, Meta, H1, Product Description and H1 tag. Also, if possible I would spend the time to write about the use cases for each individual size. The iframe is a bad idea and would not help at all.

SEO trending down after adding content to website
Hi
Technical SEO | | swat1827
Looking for some guidance. I added about 14 pages of unique content and did all of the on page SEO work using Yoast - have 'good' status on all of them some of the website architecture was changed - mainly on one page. That being said, we got a significant bump the day I implemented, however every day thereafter we have had very bad results. Worse than we had before for about 3 days now. I did resubmit the updated sitemap to GWT and I'm showing no crawl errors. Also, curious if my Robots.txt file could be the issue. All it contains is User-agent: *
Disallow: /wp-admin/ Any insight or advise is greatly appreciated!

Duplicate content on charity website
Hi Mozers, We are working on a website for a UK charity – they are a hospice and have two distinct brands, one for their adult services and another for their children’s services. They currently have two different websites which have a large number of pages that contain identical text. We spoke with them and agreed that it would be better to combine the websites under one URL – that way a number of the duplicate pages could be reduced as they are relevant to both brands. What seamed like a good idea initially is beginning to not look so good now. We had planned to use CSS to load different style sheets for each brand – depending on the referring URL (adult / Child) the page would display the appropriate branding. This will will work well up to a point. What we can’t work out is how to style the page if it is the initial landing page – the brands are quite different and we need to get this right. It is not such an issue for the management type pages (board of trustees etc) as they govern both identities. The issue is the donation, fundraising pages – they need to be found, and we are concerned that users will be confused if one of those pages is the initial landing page and they are served the wrong brand. We have thought of making one page the main page and using rel canonical on the other one, but that will affect its ability to be found in the search engines. Really not sure what the best way to move forward would be, any suggestions / guidance would be much appreciated. Thanks Fraser .

Duplicate Content Question (E-Commerce Site)
Hi All, I have a page that ranks well for the keyword “refurbished Xbox 360”. The ranking page is an eCommerce product details page for a particular XBOX 360 system that we do not currently have in stock (currently, we do not remove a product details page from the website, even if it sells out – as we bring similar items into inventory, e.g. more XBOX 360s, new additional pages are created for them). Long story short, given this way of doing things, we have now accumulated 79 “refurbished XBOX 360” product details pages across the website that currently, or at some point in time, reflected some version of a refurbished XBOX 360 in our inventory. From an SEO standpoint, it’s clear that we have a serious duplicate content problem with all of these nearly identical XBOX 360 product pages. Management is beginning to question why our latest, in-stock, XBOX 360 product pages aren't ranking and why this stale, out-of-stock, XBOX 360 product page still is. We are in obvious need of a better process for retiring old, irrelevant (product) content and eliminating duplicate content, but the question remains, how exactly is Google choosing to rank this one versus the others since they are primarily duplicate pages? Has Google simply determined this one to be the original? What would be the best practice approach to solving a problem like this from an SEO standpoint – 301 redirect all out of stock pages to in stock pages, remove the irrelevant page? Any thoughts or recommendations would be greatly appreciated. Justin

Duplicate content question with PDF
Hi, I manage a property listing website which was recently revamped, but which has some on-site optimization weaknesses and issues. For each property listing like http://www.selectcaribbean.com/property/147.html there is an equivalent PDF version spidered by google. The page looks like this http://www.selectcaribbean.com/pdf1.php?pid=147 my question is: Can this create a duplicate content penalty? If yes, should I ban these pages from being spidered by google in the robots.txt or should I make these link nofollow?
