Need advice re: selecting an Ecommerce platform
-
Hi. I am responsible for choosing an ecommerce platform and overseeing the implementation of a large ecommerce site. The site will have tens of thousands of products and will be fairly complex.
Eventually the site will integrate with the suppliers back end inventory/order management system, which is some sort of custom Windows/.NET system. (I'm not very technical if you haven't noticed....)
Primarily I want a platform that is SEO friendly, and I have to be sure that the site is developed properly from an SEO and usability perspective. I thought I would go with an asp.net solution (aspdotnetstorefront, specifically) to facilitate the future integration, but I am questioning this choice after reading some of the comments I have found here at SEOMoz.
So is asp.net really a bad choice SEO-wise? I almost considered Magento, but was having trouble finding a good solution provider to work with. I also worried about integration issues down the road.
I would appreciate any advice or input anyone may have.
Thank you!

Thank you Keri, I had read about speed issues with Magento before, but I thought they had been mostly resolved.
I think I am going to stick to my asp.net solution..... it's a decision, anyway.

Tyler,
Thank you- I didn't even notice that the providers were classified as Enterprise etc. I started at the top and was immediately priced out of the market!

You might look at this question regarding ecommerce. http://www.seomoz.org/q/what-is-the-most-seo-friendly-ecommerce-cms-platform-available-today
In the answers, there is someone using Magento with 60,000 products between two sites. Speed has been a large problem, though it looks like a recent update has helped. You might contact that poster, as it looks like s/he could offer a lot of first-hand experience.

I don't know if you looked here: http://www.magentocommerce.com/partners/find/solution-partners/united-states/
But this is the route I used to find my service provider. I would go to the last page and start there with professional providers not enterprise. They will work on the free community version without too much trouble.
The biggest question when talking to these people is "what kind of companies do you normally work with" - if it sounds similar to your situation that's good!
If I answered your question please mark "this answered my question"
Thanks

Thank you for your response. If you know of any good Magento solution providers, and wouldn't mind sharing that would be very helpful.

Hello,
You have identified my two favorite ecommerce platforms. I opted for magento and am very pleased with the site, usability and seo. I think you will find asp.net a good choice too. Either way you will need to find a good provider. The provider list at magento is long and there are some good ones in there. Mostly asking around 4,000$ and up to work with them. Both Magento and Asp.net as excellent choices and will fit any store owners needs. Don't worry about integration down the road. Unless there are some technical things you need done.

301 redirection help needed!
Hi all, So if we used to have a domain (let's say olddomain.com) and we had a new site created at newdomain.com how do we properly setup redirects page to page. Caveat, the urls have changed so for instance the old page oldomain.com/service is now newdomain.com/our-services on the new site. Do we need to have hosting on the old site? Do we need to setup individual 301s for each page corresponding to the new page? Just looking for the easiest way to do this CORRECTLY. Thanks, Ricky

Long product urls ecommerce store
Hi we have a site in the mens fashion space who have long product urls which look like this: https://www.domain.com/catalog/product/view/id/13700/s/the-mate-tee-grey-marle-upm618g/category/120/ The site is on Magento. Are there any serious SEO negatives of having such a long product url and including irrelevant information in the url like product/view/id/13700/s/ & /category/120/ in the URL. Or are the benefits of changing them to more URL friendly product urls like: https://www.domain.com/the-mate-tee-grey-marle-upm/ Minimal? Cheers.

Cross Linking two related ecommerce websites
Hi Guys, Hope you'll be able to help me with a technical problem I am facing right now. We are a company right ? We own 2 webistes. Let's say one sells car parts, the other one buys second hand car parts to refurbish them and sell them. (It is not our case, just an example very similar to ours). sellparts.com buyparts.com Both are ecommerce websites, with large catalogues (7000 skus). sellparts sells a lot and is a big actor in its market. buyparts.com doesn't work nad has a really low DA. My new SEO external consultant, which I am not too convinced about, is telling me to cross link the sites on product level using cross-linking extensions. He want have them do-follow. That would mean having hundreds or thousands of links with really similar linking patterns. buy [parts] [model ] [make] sell [parts] [model ] [make] That to me seems a bit too much and I am worried it compromises the sellparts site's SEO. So should i no-follow the links ? Or do it differently ?

Local SEO - Do I need it if I don't do business locally?
Super confused about this. Our office is located in Los Angeles, but it is not a storefront, and our clients are from all over the country... and our business involves travel to other countries. So there is nothing "local" about us. But everything I read seems to say we should be doing local SEO. How to approach this?

Advice needed on how to handle alleged duplicate content and titles
Hi I wonder if anyone can advise on something that's got me scratching my head. The following are examples of urls which are deemed to have duplicate content and title tags. This causes around 8000 errors, which (for the most part) are valid urls because they provide different views on market data. e.g. #1 is the summary, while #2 is 'Holdings and Sector weightings'. #3 is odd because it's crawling the anchored link. I didn't think hashes were crawled? I'd like some advice on how best to handle these, because, really they're just queries against a master url and I'd like to remove the noise around duplicate errors so that I can focus on some other true duplicate url issues we have. Here's some example urls on the same page which are deemed as duplicates. 1) http://markets.ft.com/Research/Markets/Tearsheets/Summary?s=IVPM:LSE http://markets.ft.com/Research/Markets/Tearsheets/Holdings-and-sectors-weighting?s=IVPM:LSE http://markets.ft.com/Research/Markets/Tearsheets/Summary?s=IVPM:LSE&widgets=1 What's the best way to handle this?
