-
**Problem: I have found something wierd on the server log as below. the googlebot visit the folders and files which do not exist at all. there is no photo folder on the server, but googlebot visit the files inside the photo folder and return 404 error. **
I wonder if it is SEO hacking attempts, and how can someone manage to Manipulate Googlebot.

Hi
This is a valid concert.
As Mat correctly stated, Googlebot is not easily manipulated.
Having said that, Googlebot impersonation is a sad fact.Recently we released a Fake Googlebot study in which we've found out that 21% of all Googlebot visits are made by different impersonators - fairly "innocent" SEO tools used for competition check-ups, various spammer and even malicious scanner that will use Googlebot user-agent to try and slip in between the cracks and lay a path for a more serious attack to come (DDoS, IRA and etc).
To identify your visitor can use Botopedia's "IP check tool" - it will cross-verify the IP and help reveal most fake bots.
(I`ve already searched for 66.249.71.25 and it's legit - see attached image)Still, IPs can be spoofed.
So, if in doubt, I would promote a "better safe than sorry" approach and advise you to look into free bad bot protection services (there are several good ones).GL

If anyone did manage to get control of googlebot they could find better uses to put it to than that.
Much more likely is that there are links somewhere to those URLs - they may well be on someone else's site. Google is following the link to see what it there, then finding nothing. However it works on a file by file basis rather than by directory so it could happen quite a bit.
If you want to stop it clogging up your error logs (and ensure that googlebot cycles are spent indexing better stuff) just block that directory in your robots.txt file.

Suggested Screaming Frog configuration to mirror default Googlebot crawl?
Hi All, Does anyone have a suggested Screaming Frog (SF) configuration to mirror default Googlebot crawl? I want to test my site and see if it will return 429 "Too Many Requests" to Google. I have set the User Agent as Googlebot (Smartphone). Is the default SF Menu > Configuration > Speed > Max Threads 5 and Max URLs 2.0 comparable to Googlebot? Context:

I had tried NetPeak SEO Spider which did a nice job and had a cool feature that would pause a crawl if it got to many 429. Long Story short, B2B site threw 429 Errors when there should have been no load on a holiday weekend at 1:00 AM.0 -
Content Rendering by Googlebot vs. Visitor
Hi Moz! After a different question on here, I tried fetching as Google to see the difference between bot & user - to see if Google finds the written content on my page The 2 versions are quite different - with Googlebot not even rendering product listings or content, just seems to be the info in the top navigation - guessing this is a massive issue? After Receiving a "Googlebot can't access your site" would this stop your site from being crawled?
Hi Everyone,
Intermediate & Advanced SEO | | AMA-DataSet
A few weeks ago now I received a "Googlebot can't access your site..... connection failure rate is 7.8%" message from the webmaster tools, I have since fixed the majority of these issues but iv noticed that all page except the main home page now have a page rank of N/A while the home page has a page rank of 5 still. Has this connectivity issues reduced the page ranks to N/A? or is it something else I'm missing? Thanks in advance.0 -
Does Googlebot Read Session IDs?
I did a raw export from AHREFs yesterday and one of our sites has 18,000 backlinks coming from the same site. But they're all the same link, just with a different session ID. The structure of the URL is: [website].com/resources.php?UserID=10031529 And we have 18,000 of these with a different ID. Does Google read each of these as a unique backlink or does it realize there's just one link and the session ID is throwing it off? I read different opinions when researching this so I'm hoping the Moz community can give some concrete answers.

Can I, in Google's good graces, check for Googlebot to turn on/off tracking parameters in URLs?
Basically, we use a number of parameters in our URLs for event tracking. Google could be crawling an infinite number of these URLs. I'm already using the canonical tag to point at the non-tracking versions of those URLs....that doesn't stop the crawling tho. I want to know if I can do conditional 301s or just detect the user agent as a way to know when to NOT append those parameters. Just trying to follow their guidelines about allowing bots to crawl w/out things like sessionID...but they don't tell you HOW to do this. Thanks!

Best way to view Global Navigation bar from GoogleBot's perspective
Hi, Links in the global navigation bar of our website do not show up when we look at Google cache --> text only version of the page. These links use "style="<a class="attribute-value">display:none;</a>" when we looked at HTML source. But if I use "user agent switcher" add-on in Firefox and set it to Googlebot, the links in global nav are displayed. I am wondering what is the best way to find out if Google can/can not see the links. Thanks for the help! Supriya.

Fetch as GoogleBot "Unreachable Page"
Hi, We are suddenly having an error "Unreachable Page" when any page of our site is accessed as Googlebot from webmaster tools. There are no DNS errors shown in "Crawl Errors". We have two web servers named web1 and web2 which are controlled by a software load balancer HAProxy. The same network configuration has been working for over a year now and never had any GoogleBot errors before 21st of this month. We tried to check if there could be any error in sitemap, .htaccess or robots.txt by excluding the loadbalancer and pointing DNS to web1 and web2 directly and googlebot was able to access the pages properly and there was no error. But when loadbalancer was made active again by pointing the DNS to it, the "unreachable page" started appearing again. This very same configuration has been working properly for over a year till 21st of this month. Website is properly accessible from browser and there are no DNS errors either as shown by "Crawl Errors". Can you guide me about how to diagnose the issue. I've tried all sorts of combinations, even removed the firewall but no success. Is there any way to get more details about error instead of just "Unreachable Page" error ? Regards, shaz

We would like to know where googlebots search from - IP location?
We have a client who has two sites for different countries, 1 US, 1 UK and redirects visitors based on IP. In order to make sure that the English site is crawable, we need to know where the googlebot searches from. Is this a US IP or a UK IP for a UK site / server?
