When should you turn off redirects to your new domain?

Our website moved to a new domain a year ago, and we have our original domain to redirect to our new domain. We're working on contacting people who still link to our old domain to ask them to update, but 7% of our traffic is still coming as a redirect from our old domain.
My question is, when should we just shut the old domain down entirely and stop redirecting people to our new domain? Or should we just keep it up indefinitely? What would be the positive or negative impact on our new domain's SEO if we shut the old domain down?

Are there any metrics you can use from the new site to help convince the higher-ups? Maybe your analytics can show that with the site redesign, people stay on the new site longer, that the bounce rate is lower, conversions are higher, or something you can use to show them that it would be better to have the pages on the new site format?

Yes and no. There are certain pages on the old domain that still exist, but very few, and we're trying to convince the higher-ups that we should move those pages into our new site. The majority of the old website, though, 301 redirects to our new domain.

So the old domain with the old content is still displayed, you're not just sending users to the appropriate page of the new domain with a 301?

Our old domain was a sprawling behemoth of a website (we completely redid our website when we changed domains), which is a big part of the reason why we're itching to take it down - not so much the cost issue. But you make a good point, thanks!

Keep the domain up there and redirected indefinitely, it's not hurting anything and can only help. And don't let the registration lapse, you don't want a competitor to pick up that old domain and do something with it.

Or you could just skip 2 latte's at Starbucks, then you don't have to sweat the 9 bucks to maintain it.

As the other responses have said, although it will cost you a yearly fee to keep the website up, (minimal), it is in your interest to keep it up to keep that 7% referring traffic. Check out Open Site Explorer to help you identify the websites that have not added your new link, and contact the webmasters to ask them to change it.
Depending on your target audience, if you turn off the redirects, there is a high chance they will be able to find you if they are looking for you. I guess it would depend on the sites content, and whether the traffic was brand related or search driven.

Your best bet would be to keep it up. That way any link juice coming from websites linking to your old domain will still carry through to your new domain by using the redirect. Also, if you are still receiving visitors to your old domain, it would be a good idea to continue to keep the redirect alive, just to continue receiving those visits and all potential traffic that would come from the old domain.
I would say, if you stop seeing very much, if any, traffic coming from the redirect, you could do without it. However, if it's a concern over spending the money to renew the old domain, depending on how much it costs, it may or may not be worth it to you.

The only downside is the $9.95 you pay to keep the registration. The downside to turning it off are many. You lose the PR that is is passing, even if there is no traffic coming from that old domain it still passes PR! Keep it forever!

Moving Shopify from a Sub Domain to the Full Domain
Apologies if this has been asked before. Currently we have a Shopify shop on a subdomain shop.lucybee.com a blog on subdomain blog.lucybee.com and the full domain of course. Subdomain redirect
Hey guys, I was thinking about creating subdomains for one of my websites. I want to divide my website in different subdomains (blog.[site].com / directory.[site].com / etc.) but I'm afraid that this will negatively impact my rankings. My blog for example has a lot of supporting content for my products and services that are primarily hosted on the homepage. Have you guys ever created subdomains at a later stage of your website's existence? What kind of impact did you notice? Would you recommend it? Thanks a million!

To 301 redirect or not...
Hi guys i'd like to get your opinion on this. We currently have two sites, site A is the old one with PA44 and DA33. Site B is the new one which is going to replace site A it currently has PA37 and DA24 Our plan for the future is to shut down site A and redirect all pages using 301 to the relevant pages on side B. Currently we have some links in place for a couple of keywords on site A to site B which seems to be working great for our ranking. Now i'm wondering if this is maybe a good option, to give back links from A to B or will i pass through more link juice when redirecting everything? (ps. both are e commerce sites hosted and registred with different companies)

Domain redirect seo
Hello, my domain www.pacomarca.com and when i start the new campaing i get this pronblem: We have detected that the domain www.pacomarca.com and the domain pacomarca.com both respond to web requests and do not redirect. Having two "twin" domains that both resolve forces them to battle for SERP positions, making your SEO efforts less effective. We suggest redirecting one, then entering the other here. my domain is in networksolutions.com. how can i resolve it? many thanks Gonzalo

Can I do a redirect to a new domain name only a couple of weeks after having redirected to another domain?
I have a client with two website with very similar content. Both had a lot of inbound links and performed fairly well in SERPS. We recently combined both sites and have redirected one of the domains to the other. The traffic dipped slightly initially, but is recovering nicely. Now the client registered a new domain name he would like to use for the site. Should I wait a few weeks for everything to settle down after the first redirect/consolidation of sites before doing a new redirect to a new domain name, or should I not worry about having any issues with doing it right away?

External Links from own domain
Hi all, I have a very weird question about external links to our site from our own domain. According to GWMT we have 603,404,378 links from our own domain to our domain (see screen 1) We noticed when we drilled down that this is from disabled sub-domains like m.jump.co.za. In the past we used to redirect all traffic from sub-domains to our primary www domain. But it seems that for some time in the past that google had access to crawl some of our sub-domains, but in december 2010 we fixed this so that all sub-domain traffic redirects (301) to our primary domain. Example http://m.jump.co.za/search/ipod/ redirected to http://www.jump.co.za/search/ipod/ The weird part is that the number of external links kept on growing and is now sitting on a massive number. On 8 April 2011 we took a different approach and we created a landing page for m.jump.co.za and all other requests generated 404 errors. We added all the directories to the robots.txt and we also manually removed all the directories from GWMT. Now 3 weeks later, and the number of external links just keeps on growing: Here is some stats: 11-Apr-11 - 543 747 534 12-Apr-11 - 554 066 716 13-Apr-11 - 554 066 716 14-Apr-11 - 554 066 716 15-Apr-11 - 521 528 014 16-Apr-11 - 515 098 895 17-Apr-11 - 515 098 895 18-Apr-11 - 515 098 895 19-Apr-11 - 520 404 181 20-Apr-11 - 520 404 181 21-Apr-11 - 520 404 181 26-Apr-11 - 520 404 181 27-Apr-11 - 520 404 181 28-Apr-11 - 603 404 378 I am now thinking of cleaning the robots.txt and re-including all the excluded directories from GWMT and to see if google will be able to get rid of all these links.
