Google+ Local and Google Places?
-
Hey Everyone,
I've been out of the game for a few months, and I am amazed at how much I've missed! I'm trying to wrap my head around the difference between Google+, Google+ Local, and Google Places - can anyone help?
My client has a Google+ account and manages multiple businesses under Google Places. I can't seem to get google to connect the two though (the account login is the same). I know Google is still working on migrating Google Places to Google+ Local, so here's my question:
How do I obtain ownership of my Google Places listings in Google+ Local? I already have ownership of the Google Places listings, but when I log into the Google+ account there is no proof of ownership. I can add the related Google+ Local locations to my "Pages" in Google+, but it lists me as a manager and not an owner.
My client has been penalized by Google in the past (not my doing, but unfortunately something I now have to deal with), so I want to tread lightly as I optimize his local listings. Any assistance to help me figure this out is greatly appreciated! Also, if anyone knows of a good book on Google+ Local for business owners I would love the referral!
Thanks!

Thank you for these resources, they've helped a lot in trying to figure out the Google+ vs Local issue. Unfortunately, it looks like my client is best suited to wait it out - He tends to be an action-first type of person, so it looks like I have some convincing ahead of me
I think one of the comments on the blog post was dead on when they said "You know someone said the abilty to make complicated things simple is genius. Well.. Google is no genius!" Hopefully this is just a temporary confusion that will work itself out for business owners as Google continues to perfect the merge...

So in short, your Places listings will update data for your G+ Local listings. This will be different from your G+ Business page (unless you've gone through the merge process), and could be under an entirely different account.
Some good coverage from Blumenthals.com: http://blumenthals.com/blog/category/google-plus/
These three posts discuss the differences between the G+ Business Pages vs. G+ Local Pages, and issues going on with the merge process.

I'm hoping someone can chime in with any newer information than this. I haven't been involved in this process over the past month so I'm wondering if the situation has gotten better.

Counting unique landing pages in Google Analytics: social vs organic channels
Remember the technique Rand posted for counting the unique indexed landing pages on a site? http://moz.com/blog/indexation-for-seo-real-numbers-in-5-easy-steps I'm using Google Analytics to compare this result for the "social" channel vs. the "organic search" channel. The idea is to see whether social or search delivers people to more unique landing pages. I would expect organic search to yield a significantly higher count, due to long tail searches for relatively obscure terms. We have an archive of over 500k pages that Google could be indexing, even if only a fraction of a percent of those might be getting social mentions. But that's not what the numbers show -- I'm seeing roughly 10% higher numbers for the Social channel than for Organic Search. Again, I'm counting unique landing pages here, not the total pageviews or visits. If anyone else here is monitoring these metrics, please chime in with your results. What's the baseline expectation for a large website with hundreds of thousands of pages of issue-centric user-generated content? Should search traffic provide 2x more landing page exposures than social? 5x? 10x? or 0.9x, as in my case? In short, I believe these numbers are pointing to an indexing/ranking problem following a recent site redesign.

Is it possible to Merge a Google+ Page with Google Places/local Page on G+
I have seem to have a problem (well think its a problem!) We have a google+ page for our website/ brand (which is verified) and also seem to have a separate google places G+ page (the one with just two tabs at the top.. Photos and About). When you google our brand, google has added a google+ page link but this links to the places one and not our social g+ page. Is it possible to merge these two pages into one? ps i have added rel="publisher" directing to the main google+ page (not local) on the home page and the local G+ page is not verified. Ben

How do you get more Google +s?
I have had a google plus page and a facebook page for my business for a long time now. I have not had any issues building a customer base via Facebook either by promoting my page or by using the pay promotions via facebook. On the other hand, I have had 0 luck of getting +s on my google page. I feel the page looks good, but just am having a hard time. Is there an effective way out there to get followers on Google+?

Purchasing a Google Plus Profile
A client of mine has the opportunity to purchase a google plus profile from a now defunct competitor. Essentially the profile is in tens of thousands of circles, so it may be a decent idea just from a marketing standpoint. When it comes to SEO I am wondering about a few things Is this against Googles rules? Has there been any proof of authorship playing a role in SERP rankings? So if there was an article where the author was in 50 circles compared to the same article where the author was in 50,000 circles would it effect the rankings at all? Have there been any studies done that show that the +1 (from Google Plus users) effects SERP rankings? Sorry for all the questions, but this is an interesting opportunity. Thanks in advance!

I have a 1)Google+ places page 2)Google+ profile page, what I would expect others to use for my business 3)Google+ page seems to be the one I should be using for my business? Anyone seen a good guide on Google+ ?

Bringing a Google+ business page and a Google+ Local (Places) page together
We have a Google+ business page @ https://plus.google.com/105699067779457680386 (therefore the managers of that page log in with their personal Google accounts to use Google+ as the business page). We had/have a Google Places listing tied to our company Google account, and that does show up in Google+ Local. I simply would like to marry the two so they can live together in perfect harmony. But that does not seem straightforward at all. If I'm logged in with our company Google account, I am asked to "join" Google+, but I don't want our company to be a "person" on Google Plus (just a Business Page). If I'm logged in with my personal Google account, and switch to using Google+ as our business page, and then click to claim/edit our Google+ Local listing, that doesn't work because I'm not logged in under our corporate Google account. It's an Internet mystery. Mozzers, assemble!
