Google & Separators

This is not a question but something to share. If you click on all of these links and compare the results you will see why _ is not a good thing to have in your URLs.

If you have any other examples of working separators please comment.

You probably already know this but there's a FF plugin called Google Global which you can use to search from other places if you wanted to check the differences easily

I have not tried it with proxies yet. The first test was from a Charlotte NC location. In the US you can change your location within Google's search. If you change it to United States you get what use to be the US results minus the localization. So you typically don't get maps when doing a search with the location set as United States.
I was using proxies to check results from different locals in the united states but found that simply changing my location via their location setting gave me the same results as the proxy from that location. But from what I understand, in Canada they don't give you the option to change your location. Is the same true in Australia?
If you look at this image you will find a "Change Location" above the map.

Yes Australia. Didn't use any proxies.
-
You're searching from Australia? That is interesting.
If I take off the location, using United States as my location, I don't get local results either.
-
Strange, no local results for me. Only videos in one case or clean serps in all others. My guess is that it's location based.
-
Very interesting. I was just told the other day not use underscores in my image names... which I have done a lot. But my images seem to rank very well.
Did you note that Wikipedia actually has underscores in their site links? Found on all the variations above.
Also noted that I got local results with all but B_L_U_E_
When doing the search for P_E_S_T_ I found similar video and image results
But doing the search for p_e_s_t_c_o_n_t_r_o_l _ did not give me image results.
Why would long tail be different?
Fun one to add:
Again no local results for me on the last one, but yes on the prior two.
Thanks for sharing.

Ahhh of course... that's pretty cool. And the video file/save names possibly do have too. That's a quality experiment, you should expand it and do a YouMoz post!
-
954 underscores in the source code of the first result? God knows. I suspect maybe comment material has lots of underscore_usernames/
-
How interesting. Why do you think the underscores bring video results above, making the serps mismatch all the others?

Google Penalty and Adwords
Hi guys, I am wondering if the google manual penalty or penalty in general (because of bad backlink profile) also means that your website is blocked for Adwords? Thanks

Page disappeared from Google index. Google cache shows page is being redirected.
My URL is: http://shop.nordstrom.com/c/converse Hi. The week before last, my top Converse page went missing from the Google index. When I "fetch as Googlebot" I am able to get the page and "submit" it to the index. I have done this several times and still cannot get the page to show up. When I look at the Google cache of the page, it comes up with a different page. http://webcache.googleusercontent.com/search?q=cache:http://shop.nordstrom.com/c/converse shows: http://shop.nordstrom.com/c/pop-in-olivia-kim Back story: As far as I know we have never redirected the Converse page to the Pop-In page. However the reverse may be true. We ran a Converse based Pop-In campaign but that used the Converse page and not the regular Pop-In page. Though the page comes back with a 200 status, it looks like Google thinks the page is being redirected. We were ranking #4 for "converse" - monthly searches = 550,000. My SEO traffic for the page has tanked since it has gone missing. Any help would be much appreciated. Stephan

Google Places Reviews
Has anyone had any delays on Google+ reviews to show up? We have multiple clients who have not received a new review in over two months. These are good accounts with good Zagat scores with 15+ good reviews from real customers. Our clients have asked their clients and have confirmed that there has been reviews left recently. However no new reviews have shown up in the past 60+ days.

Google Alerts News Images
I have a Google Alert setup which is pulling information from a blog. I am receiving images as part of the alert. The issue that I am having is that the images have nothing to do with the blog post. Is there a way to control what images are received in the alert. From what I have gathered, if it grabs an image it should be part of the blog post.

Why is google ignoring my sitelinks demotions?
I'm referring to the sitelinks that appear in the SERPs when searching for my brand name. 6 subpages come up- some found in my main navigation, some not. 3 of the 6 sitelinks have been demoted in Webmaster Tools under "Site Configuration > Sitelinks." I realize that they say in their instructions: "Google doesn't guarantee that demoted URLs will never appear as a sitelink, but we do consider a demotion a strong hint that we'll try to honor when generating sitelinks." I am just surprised they would ignore 3 of the demotions and for so long. The pages that are demoted do not have very many internal links pointing to them (unlike other pages of my site that are targeted specifically). Also, the site has tens of thousands of pages to choose from. Why are they ignoring my request? What else can I do to fix this?

301 & backlinks
Apologies if my question sounds like a school Maths lesson 😉 If you have 2 sites: Site 1) is linked to by sites A,B & C Site 2) is linked to by sites X,Y & Z You then 301 redirect site 2 to site 1. Most of the juice from site 2 (obtained from links X,Y,Z) should be passed over to site 1. But what if site 2 is linked to by the same sites A,B,C as site 1 instead of X,Y,Z. Since both sites have exactly the same links will the same, less, or any weight be passed over by the 301 redirect? Many thanks.

Multiple Google Places listings under review
I have a client with a waste removal business who had multiple listings on his Google Places account for different service locations. Over the last four months I have been creating separate listings for each separate service location, each under a different Google account and with a unique business name, address, phone number and website URL. They have all been verified by postcard and listed separately in local directories so that they have citations. As I have been creating the new listings I have also been deleted the old ones to make sure they are not flagged as duplicates. 2 months ago all the listings in the client's Google Places account were placed under review. I made some changes and submitted it for re-review but no go with Google. Now all the new listings I set up have also suddenly been placed under review. About a week ago I noticed that information in two separate Google Places listings was being mixed up - for example, the website URL for one listing was being shown in another listing. There is no connection between these two listings other than that they were both set up from the same IP address so this seems very strange. I reported this to Google and asked them to sort it out, then all of a sudden I found that ALL of the new listings had been placed under review. So now my client has no active listings at all. He can't afford to wait another 2 months for Google to review all the listings again so I am wondering whether the best course of action would just be to delete everything and start over. Any advice would be most welcome!
