H1 - site name or page title?
-
Hi all,
I have always used h1 tags for the site name and then h2 tags for the page title, thus:
Bob's Chunky Bacon Store
Smoked Bacon
Bacon bacon bacon bacon etc...
My reasoning for this is I believe it is semantically correct. The h1 represents a book's title and the h2 the name of a chapter.
I seem to have read, in a few places, that my h1 should be the page title:
Bob's Chunky Bacon Store
Smoked Bacon
Bacon bacon bacon bacon etc...
From a SEO view, which of these is the better approach?
Thanks in advance for any input.

I personally feel that your
and
strategy isn't that great for SEO
I've seen that Google has shifted much of the importance of
to the <title>tag now and <h2> does nearly nothing from a SEO purpose.</span></span></p> <p><span style="font-size: 12px; color: #5e5e5e;"><span style="font-size: 12px;">I put nearly no value in H1s and have seen a low </span>correlation<span style="font-size: 12px;"> in rankings for <h1> compared to <title></span></span><span style="font-size: 12px;"> tags</span></p> <p><span style="font-size: 12px;">I think of it like this.</span></p> <p><span style="font-size: 12px;"><title> tag = what the page is about (high SEO value) (Think of your headline) (Google uses this)</span></p> <p><span style="font-size: 12px;"><h1> =description of what the page is about (lower SEO value) (kind of like a "meta" tag) (Google may use this but give it very little value as far as SEO goes) (Think of something here to make the person want to continue reading)(I still try to put my keyword at the beginning of it as a best practice)</span></p> <p><span style="font-size: 12px;">If you can structure your site to have a <title> tag and then <h1> I think you'll start to see your rankings increase. We use our <h1> tags as more of a description to what the person is about to learn</span></p> <p><span style="font-size: 12px;">For example:</span></p> <p><span style="font-size: 12px;"><title>Smoked Bacon | Bob's Chunky Bacon Store</title>
Smoked Bacon. Not just for Breakfast anymore

Search engine typically expect the
to be high on the page, above content.
I agree with Eric, the
should be what the page is about and include the search term you are optimizing for that page. The
tag should be similar to the page's title tag and content's focus.

Unless I've been doing things wrongly all these years, your h1s should be what the page is about.
If it's your home page, it's probably about the company, so make the h1 the company name. If it's a page about buying smoked bacon, make the h1 "Buy Smoked Bacon" or some variation of that because the page isn't about Bob's Chunky Bacon Store. It's about buying smoked bacon.

Is having one blanket h1 tag across my site bad?
I've been working on figuring out if my site host (jigsy) is hindering my seo. The site editor doesn't allow me to assign individual h1 tags for each page, it just blankets one across the whole site as part of a theme.....is this normal?...would it be better to have individual h1s?....is that a thing? Or should I work on making a better one since all my pages should technically be related to counseling/therapy? Site: www.joeborders.com

3,511 Pages Indexed and 3,331 Pages Blocked by Robots
Morning, So I checked our site's index status on WMT, and I'm being told that Google is indexing 3,511 pages and the robots are blocking 3,331. This seems slightly odd as we're only disallowing 24 pages on the robots.txt file. In light of this, I have the following queries: Do these figures mean that Google is indexing 3,511 pages and blocking 3,331 other pages? Or does it mean that it's blocking 3,331 pages of the 3,511 indexed? As there are only 24 URLs being disallowed on robots.text, why are 3,331 pages being blocked? Will these be variations of the URLs we've submitted? Currently, we don't have a sitemap. I know, I know, it's pretty unforgivable but the old one didn't really work and the developers are working on the new one. Once submitted, will this help? I think I know the answer to this, but is there any way to ascertain which pages are being blocked? Thanks in advance! Lewis

Switching site from http to https. Should I do entire site?
Good morning, As many of you have read, Google seems to have confirmed that they will give a small boost to sites with SSL certificates this morning. So my question is, does that mean we have to switch our entire site to https? Even simple information pages and blog posts? Or will we get credit for the https boost as long as the sensitive parts of our site have it? Anybody know? Thanks in advance.

Duplicate Page Title Error passing a php variable
Hi i've searched about this and read about this and i can't get my head around it and could really do with some help. I have a lot of contact buttons which all lead to the same enquiry form and dependant on where it has come from it fills in the enquiry field on the contact form. For example if you are on the airport transfer page it will carry the value so its prefilled in (.php?prt=Airport Transfers). The problem is it's coming up as a duplicate page however its just the 1. I have this problem with quite a few sites and really need to combat this issue. Any help would be very much appreciated. airport-transfers.php

Too many links? Do links to named anchors count (ie page#nameanchor)?
Hi, I have an internal search results page that contains approx 200 links in total. This links to approx 50 pages. Each result listing contains a link to the page in the format /page.html and also has 3 more links (for each listing) to named anchors within the page. eg /page.html#section1, /page.html#section2, /page.html#section3 etc. Should i remove the named anchors to keep my links per page under the Seomoz suggested max of 100? Will it impact crawl-ability or link juice being passed? Thanks in advance for your response.

For large sites, best practices for pages hidden behind internal search?
If a website has 1M+ pages, with most of them being hidden behind an internal search, what's the best way to get pages included in an engine's index? Does a direct clickpath to those pages need to exist from the homepage or other major hub pages on the site? Is submitting an XML sitemap enough?
