Redirects to external sites
-
Hi there,
I have listings that all link to external sites. In order to track how many times each link was clicked I coded a redirect script that simply redirects to the respective url.
www.mysite.com/go/123/ - redirects to another site
www.mysite.com/go/541/ - redirects to a different site
Is there anything I should or should not do from seo stand point such as blocking the /go directory in robots or adding a no-follow tag to links? I'd appreciate your advice. Thanks

Hi Vitaly,
1. The common way to track clicks is by using Google Analytics and event tracking. It's well documented by Google, and many websites use it:
https://developers.google.com/analytics/devguides/collection/gajs/eventTrackerGuide
Basically, you add a bit of code to every link you want tracked, like so:
[Play](#)
And these clicks show up as events in your Google Analytics report.
2. Redirects like the type you describe are very often used with affiliate links. By redirecting through an internal url, you can not only track the link, but this gives you an opportunity to obfuscate the nature of the link from Google, something many affiliate marketers like to do. (Personally, I don't think Google gives a hoot if you link to affiliate sites, but that's a different story.
Typically, the redirect directory, often called "go" as in your example, is blocked by the robots.txt file.
User-agent: * Disallow: /go/
If the redirect passes through an actual web page, then there are other ways Google might crawl and index these pages, and they certainly don't help your rankings, so you'd want to additionally block them with a robots NOINDEX tag. (most of the time, the "go" directory is not an actual webpage, but a program file that performs the redirect without rendering a page, so this usually isn't necessary.
Personally, in most cases #1 is easier and more direct than #2, but which method you choose will depend on your individual goals.
Hope this helps. Best of luck with your SEO!

Same person on my site, every day, for over 6 months??
I watch my Google analytics real time while I work and for the last 6 months, I've had one person on my site consistently during every Monday to Friday. It's only the home page there go on, it never shows they look anywhere else. But it's starting to concern me a little since it's been going on for so long. Does anyone have an idea what they could be doing? I do my own SEO, there is no one else working on my site. Thanks in advance!

Does a Manual Penalty Affect Other Sites in Same GA Account
Hello Mozzers, I was a bit foolish a couple of years back when first getting into the game, and employed a dodgy agency to do some SEO for me on some sites. Fast forward to this year, and the two sites in my Google Analytics account have been hit with a manual penalty. I decided to ditch the websites and move on, so removed them from my GA account, webmaster tools etc and will simply let them die a death. My question is, do you think this would affect how easy it would be to rank other websites within my GA account? Does anybody have any views on this? Thanks!

Mobile Site on Google Analytics
Hi mozzers, We just launched a mobile site and I was wondering what are the main steps to follow for gettting your mobile site tracked via GA (m.example.com)? We have a profile for www.example.com GATC: javascript or PHP to install? Should the profile be on a subdomain? What else to consider when implementing a mobile site on GA? Thanks

Is there any way to find out how many people blocked our site in Google?
With it being a factor in Panda, I would like to know what the number is and whether it's high / low compared to other sites etc. I kind of doubt a lot of people would have blocked us, but I'd like to at least be aware of whether that's a problem for us.

When one of my sites returns a ranking that consistently reads "No Data", what does that say about the site?
I am getting "No Data" reads for some of my sites - I personally think it has to do with the site's construction - especially the landing page... I inherited this site to do SEO - it was not created with on site SEO in mind - please help if you can sites are: www.storagesanangelo.com www.storagemidland.com Should I get webmaster to remove the big map graphic and add text and pics instead... Sure appreciate brilliant thoughts - even about yetis and beer
