Worth Splitting Up Main Site into Several Microsites?
-
The company I work for offers a variety of very different products, that are sold to different audiences.
Right now (and for the past 4 years) all the products have been listed on one main website.
Over the years, we have accumulated over 200,000 links and rank relatively well in most of the product-specific keywords.
Still, for business purposes we really feel that having a unique site specific to each product would be more beneficial than having them all on one site.
What are the pros and cons of making a move to different subdomains from a main site.
(i.e. instead of www.cleanedison.com/solar we would set up a solar.cleanedison.com)
-
If they break up that domain they need to have their heads examined.

Thank you for your feedback Irving and Takeshi! It's much appreciated.
To answer Irving's question, there's two main reasons we are thinking about using "productA.domain.com" rather than "domain.com/productA". 1) if it would help us rank better in SERPS, and 2) to improve the user experience. Our hunch is that if users think they are dealing with a company that specializes in Product A, they will be more inclined to buy than if they realize that our company sells Products A, B, C, and D.
So far, we have been linkbuilding for each product separately rather than for the top-level domain as a whole. For example, we will create content about Product A and get other sites that specialize in content about Product A to link back to "domain.com/productA". We then repeat the process for Products B, C, etc.
So changing over to subdomains would not create more work for us from a linkbuilding perspective. The main thing we are concerned about is, will this improve or hurt our rankings? We only have 4 main product types, but they are all quite different from each other and targeted to different audiences. From everything that I've read, domain authority and trust does pass from the main domain to subdomains if you only have a small number of them.
-
I agree with Irving. By creating 4 different sites, you quadruple the amount of link building you need to do and lose out on your established domain authority.
It would be better from an SEO perspective to run with subdirectories (domain.com/product) rather than subdomains (product.domain.com). You can still create a unique looking site for each subdirectory, you can even have them look completely different from each other with different navigation, and the homepage would just have links to the 4 different sections of your site.
With subdirectories, you can still create 4 distinct sites with their own branding & navigation, but you still benefit from the site's overall domain authority.
-
Keep it all under one domain.
a) subdomains won't help you rank better
b) they will be considered as new sites
c) navigation and user experience is worse
d) harder to maintain separate sites
e) the bigger the one site the more powerful and you already have a lot of links
f) excessive interlinking can be an SEO issue
g) bounce rate will increase and time spent on site will decrease on the main site
there is no need to do it from an SEO perspective, what are your "business purposes" that make you feel that this would be more beneficial

Site redesign - 301 Redirects
I've just overhauled a website, leaving lots of former posts in the dust. I've set up a 404 redirect to the home page so that if anyone goes to one of those old pages they land on the home page instead of a dead 404. But, there's a couple urls from the old site I'd prefer to redirect to similar pages. These urls have forward slashes and I don't know how to get the slashes in when I copy it over to the new site. This is probably something easy, but I'm baffled. This www.lawbarron.com/personal-injury/whip-its-nitrous-oxide/ becomes this when I copy it www.lawbarron.com/personal-injury-whip-its-nitrous-oxide Can someone help me out?

Having a second homepage for a site would affect my SEO?
Hello guys, One of our clients is planning to have a new landing page for any users hitting the site for the first time. (returning users will still see the current homepage based on cookies ... in other words, the site would technically have 2 home pages). According to this client, they are planning to do something like this: https://www.websitename.com/ (for returning visitors) https://www.websitename.com/newuser (for first time visitors) Our instinct is that is not great to have 2 home pages (that would affect the SEO campaign we are managing for this company) and we are not sure how to handle this. That's why we would appreciate your opinion regarding this topic: From an SEO perspective, do you think this is a good idea? If not, what would you guys do differentiate first-time visitors vs returning visitors without affecting SEO? Maybe just a pop-up? Thanks in advance for your help !

Is it better to redirect a url or set up a landing page for a new site?
Hi, One of our clients has got a new website but is still getting quite a lot of traffic to her old site which has a page authority of 30 on the home page and has about 20 external backlinks. It's on a different hosting package so a different C block but I was wondering if anyone could advise if it would be better to simply redirect this page to the new site or set up a landing page on this domain simply saying "Site has moved, you can now find us here..." sort of idea. Any advice would be much appreciated Thanks

Time On Site and SEO?
Does time on site impact rankings? If a person visits your site from the serps or directly visits it by typing in your name in the search field and then leaves within a minute, will that impact your serps? What is the best way to increase time on site?

Need help with image resizing (re: slow site)
I'm trying to figure out why I'm having speed issues with my site, and using google speed test to help me knock out some of the issues. One of issues deals with image resizing. I have a responsive design and so even though on the home page the normal width is 580 of the blog area, the full post can go up to 1170. So I size all of my images to 1170 wide and let CSS resize them depending on the size of the browser. (The images on the most recent post are a little bigger than this because I was testing something.) I was wondering what the best practice was in regard to what I'm trying to do. Also feel free to check out my site and let me know of any other feedback / advice you have. Thanks !:)

International SEO issues for multiple sites
We currently have 3 websites: oursite.co.uk oursite.fr oursite.ch We also own Oursite.com, and that URL currently redirects to Oursite.fr. We are considering a complete site redesign and a possible merge of the 3 sites. Assumptions: ** the 3 sites currently receive organic search traffic to varying degrees
Web Design | | darkgreenguy
** Oursite.ch is almost identical to Oursite.fr in terms of the site content
** Our target market is NOT the USA for English-language searches. It is the UK. With a re-design, we see our options as follows: Merge the 3 sites and make Oursite.com the "main site" and then have subfolders as follows: /uk /fr /ch Keep the 3 sites as they are. We see Option 1 as the best in terms of saving time when updating the site, and saving money paid to the site developers (1 site vs 3 sites). We see Option 2 as the best in terms of ability of the site to rank, as well as confidence of searchers when seeing our site in the search results (in other words, a person searching in France would be more likely to buy and/or submit a form on our site if they saw Oursite.fr vs Oursite.com/fr). I guess we're looking for some suggestions/guidance here. Are we missing any big issues? Does anyone have experience with an issue such as this? Thank you in advance...

Ecommerce web site with too many internal links
Hi, We're using Magento CE 1.4.0.1 for our ecommerce web site with a fairly flat navigation system i.e. 9 major categories display across the top menu that when you roll over display 2-20 sub categories (which take you to a groups of similar products) and then individual product pages. The categories and sub categories are available to click on as part of a dynamic Html menu system on each page. Each page also shows a small number of related products. This linking structure seems fairly standard and yet Seomoz throws up the error message, "Too Many On-page links" for most pages on our site. Do I need to really worry about this? Is there much can be done to improve this on an ecommerce web site with a large catalogue of products? I've looked at the Knowledge Base but I don't feel the existing responses adequately address the issue for ecommerce sites.
