Do links from unrelated sites dilute your rankings for your key phrases?

do links from unrelated sites dilute your rankings for your key phrases? i've always heard don't get links from unrelated sites but if that mattered, then how would sites with totally diverse pages such as newspaper sites, sears, and other catalogue sites rank for these diverse subjects on their site? How does Facebook rank when it gets 100,000 links a day from sites that have nothing to do with a social media site? I'd love to hear everyone's opinion on this. Also, Do links from unrelated sites give less push than related links?
Take care,

Thanks so much Ross!

IT won't hurt your site and will probably pass back some benefit but just how irrelevant is it? Back in the days of the Google wonder wheel, I was amazed to see how Google deemed certain topics semantically related.
The best thing to do is look at the domain authority in open site explorer. If it is above 30 you are probably on to a winner. If you were to write an article for SEO Moz that detailed how to do SEO as a musician, that would be a great link and a great article. IF you wrote an article for SEO Moz that explained tri tone substitution or chord progressions, that would be a bad article and a poorer quality link.
If the site is more than a year old i wouldn't be scared of throwing some less relevant links at it, as long as you don't nail the same anchor text and don't leave any footprints.
Hope that helps. .

Hey Ron,
That's a great idea. Google won't think you site is an employment site but it will think the page is related to employment in some way.
If you have a link that directs back to your brand promo page this will help it rank for the terms you want.
To make sure the promo page is coming up for the right terms, link to internally with the keyword (or a variation of) that you want to rank for. Also remember to make sure the keyword is in your meta title.
Another thing you might want to look into is getting a gig at the local student unions and making sure they link out to your band page with the official student union site. These types of links would also be valuable long term.
Hope that helps,
Ross.

For a good laugh, take a look at what Google's captioning system thinks Ross is saying. I don't think it handles non-American accents as well.
Ross, for the people who cannot view YouTube videos or have audio at their workplace, could you include at least a brief summary in your answer in this forum? Thanks so much!

One more question on relevance, is guest blogging for links worth the effort if it's an irrelevant blog but your post is very relevant to your site?
Will the promised "do follow" link you can earn from SEOMOZ hurt your rankings for your key phrases if your site is not an SEO site?

Hi Ross! I'm honored that you made a video response for my questions, thanks so much for the extra effort! You said i really needed to be more specific, so here's what actually coined my questions. I have a rock band site that i'm promoting and to get some high authority links, i was planning on creating a page that had lots of employment resources for music students and then email the music colleges in my state this information to get them to link to this employment resource page from their employment resources page and then funnel the page rank to my bands promo pages. Is this a good idea or will Google now think that my band site is an employment site? Thanks in advance for your input!
Take care,
Ron

Interesting question but got some easy answer for this!
Yes, links from unrelated sites are going to impact negatively on your website and possibility you will witness a dip in rankings from your desired key phrases. The reason why websites like newspapers and social media platforms like facebook are ranking when they are getting links from all Tom, Dick and harry websites is because news papers and social media platforms are talking various different topics… news paper in a day talks about international news, business news, talibans, and Hollywood movie reviews… similar is the case with social media so it’s possible for them to link from every different website.
Plus, Links when build have patterns that Google can track, there is a huge difference in pattern between building links and getting links naturally… Google possibility can track this and then analyze things accordingly.
Also, Google have 200+ signals that Google keep in mind when ranking websites against keyphrases so you never know if links are the real problems why you are witnessing a dip in rankings from your desired key phrases.

Its not about related or unrelated sites but its about Is it natural ? For example, Suppose I have seo case study of my website and I write blogpost in seomoz in which I mention out URL my website which is natural.

Can 'Jump link'/'Anchor tag' urls rank in Google for keywords?
E.g. www.website.com/page/#keyword-anchor-text Where the part after the # is a section of the page you can jump to, and the title of that section is a secondary keyword you want the page to rank for?

In one site a 3rd party is asking visitors to give feedback via pop-up that covers 30-50% of the bottom of the screen, depending on screen size. Is the 3rd party or the site in danger of getting penalized after the intrusive interstitial guidelines?
I am wondering whether the intrusive interstitial penalty affects all kinds of pop-ups regardless of their nature, eg if a third party is asking feedback through a discreet pop-up that appears from the bottom of the screen and covers max 50% of it. Is the site or the third party who is asking the feedback subject to intrusive interstitial penalty? Also is the fact that in some screens the popup covers 30% and in some others 50% plays any role?

Dramatic drop in SEO rankings after recovering from hacking
A few months ago my client's website was hacked which created over 20,000+ spammy links on the site. I dealt with removing the malware and got google to remove the malware warning shortly within a week of the hacking. Then started the long process to do 301 redirects and disavowing links under Webmaster tools over these few months. The hacking only caused a slight drop in rankings at the time. Now just as of last week the site had a dramatic drop in rankings. When doing a keyword search I noticed the homepage doesn't even get listed on Google Maps and for Google Search instead the inner pages like the Contact Us page show up instead of the homepage. Does anyone have any insight to the sudden drop happening now and why the inner pages are ranking higher than the homepage now?

Why is old site not being deindexed post-migration?
We recently migrated to a new domain (16 days ago), and the new domain is being indexed at a normal rate (2-3k pages per day). The issue is the old domain has not seen any drop in indexed pages. I was expecting a drop in # of indexed pages inversely related to the increase of indexed pages on the new site. Any advice?

Traffic, CTR AND AdSense eCPM Down ... Keyword Rankings Unchanged
Since the last week in March, one of our sites with ~ 1 million high quality page-views per month has had a 25% drop in traffic, CTR drop from 4% to 3%, and AdSense eCPM has dropped from $8 to $5 ... however, all of our keyword rankings have remained unchanged. Also, it is an extremely consistent niche with no drop in relevant searches ... The only thing that we KNOW for sure has changed is the removal of the separator and indentation from the Google search ads to our #1 ranking positions. Could such a simple alteration in the Google search results UI have such a significant impact on our numbers? Is anyone else experiencing a similar revenue drop without a rankings drop in the past two weeks? Besides punching up the titles to make our search results more appealing to users, is there really anything that can be done about Googles new paid results placement? Your thoughts and suggestions are invited. Thanks guys and gals 😉

Who else is noticing a shift in deeper pages ranking?
Without mentioning names, we're noticing a shift in many of our clients ranking pages. Previously many of them held page 1 positions with their home page. We've been building brand only anchor text to these pages for some time now and there's a noticeable change in visibility to the domain as a whole displayed in GWT and there's an uplift in organic traffic too. It just happens that some of our clients already had pages in the root directory that were very optimised for the clients' head terms, but all of a sudden, these sub pages with very few inbound links have started ranking in the place of the home pages. I've attached a screenshot of the landing page organic traffic. The pages in question have been there for at least 8-10 months. These inner pages would not normally have been able to hold their ground in this position and I'm concerned that this is a temporary change. I can see this going one of two ways; (i) home page beings to out rank sub page as before, (i) sub page loses ranking ability and home page rank does not come back. My questions to the community are therefore; **Has anyone else noticed this shift in ranking behaviour? ** What are everyone's thoughts on this? - Will it remain this way? From this query I can easily ask another wider question; Good advice across the internet says we should be building strong brand links and citations to our clients' domains. Typically brand links go to the homepage, which should provide the homepage and (to a lesser extent the domain) with a ranking/traffic/visibility uplift. However, as I'm noticing other pages now picking up ranking boosts as a result of this; **Should we still be trying to gain links to these more commercial landing pages? ** How are others building high quality links to pages full of commercial copy? I hope this can spark a little bit of a debate. I look forward to hearing everyone's thoughts. Thanks yPOEjVA.png

How do these people have so many external back links?
A few of the sites that I 'compete' with have blogger accounts...and according to the research I've done they have over 500 million external, followed, links! These are mom blogs....and they aren't trying to do any SEO. I've noticed that if you are using blogger (as opposed to wordpress) and adding embed youtube videos to your blog you can set it to auto populate to youtube and also get a link in return. From what I can gather this just happens with blogger accounts since bloggers...and youtube...and google are all related. Does that have something to do with the crazy amount of followed external links they are getting? They also have a domain authority of 96 (which is because blogger is a trusted domain.... Is the sub-domain a better number to look at since their blog is a sub domain on blogger? Also, does anyone know who to get the same sort of exposure in youtube as blogger blogs get...or if it's even possible? Thanks.
