Subdomain vs root which is better for SEO
-
We run a network of sites that we are considering consolidating into one main site with multiple categories. Which would be better having each of the "topics / site" reside in subdomains or as a sub-folder off of the root? Pros and cons of each would be great.
Thanks,
TR

This might shed a little more light on the subject.
The sites are per video game. So they could be completely different from one another.
I like the way a subdomain looks and for this purpose, I've seen other sites doing it this way for a long time.
From where I sit subdomains seem to be the "right" way to go about this but if sub-dirs are going to be BETTER for SEO then I want to do that.
I don't mind SEOing multiple sites and I would somewhat prefer to keep things separated out like that.
I guess what I really want to know is, Is this a personal preference thing if workload isn't my concern? Or is one going to be objectively better than the other.
Thanks for the replies so far. Much appreciated.

Agree with Irving - it's better to have subfolders most of the time. The essential question is who will be controlling the SEO? If it's one person or company, use subfolders. If multiple people will each control their own content, use subdomains. Think about this like Wordpress.com does.
Subdomains are somewhat treated as a separate website. So if you split them, you end up doing the SEO work more than once. Subfolders are considered part of the domain so http://mysite.wordpress.com is separate from Wordpress.com while http://www.wordpress.com/info/index.html is considered part of Wordpress.com Make sense?
So if you use subdomains, each subdomain needs its own SEO. If you use subfolders all the work can be done to one site, which is usually much more efficient. The best use of subdomains is if you had say a franchise (boston.yoursite.com, chicago.yoursite.com, melbourne.yoursite.com) where each of the franchisees would be responsible for their own marketing or a site like Wordpress that allows you to build your own content (thus under many people's control.) That would be site.wordpress.com, site2.wordpress.com etc.
Wordpress doesn't "care" to SEO all those sites nor necessarily do they want to pass their own SEO juice onto those sites as subfolders so they've made them subdomains.

directories are better than subdomains. subdomains are seen as different sites, directory allows you to have one main site and pass the PR throughout the entire site to create a stronger enterprise.

CcTLDs vs folders
My company is looking at expanding internationally, we have sudomains in the UK and Canada currently. I'm making recommendations on improving SEO and one of the parts that I'm struggling with is the benefits of ccTLDs vs using folders. I know the basic argument about Google recognizing the ccTLDs as being geo specific so they get priority. But I'd like to know HOW much priority they get. We have unique keywords and a pretty strong domain, is having a ccTLDs so much better that'd be worth going that route rather then creating folders within our current domain? Thanks, Jacob

Better SEO Option, 1 Site 3 Subdomains or 4 Separate Sites?
Hey Mozzers, I'm working with a client who wants to redo their web presence. They have a a main website for the umbrella and then 3 divisions which have their own website as well. My question is: Is it better to have the main site on the main domain and then have the 3 separate sites be subdomains? Or 4 different domains with a linking structure to tie them all together? To my understanding option 1 would include high traffic for 1 domain and option 2 would be building Page Authority by having 4 different sites linking to each other? My guess would be option 2, only if all 4 sites start getting relevant authority to make the links of value. But right out of the gates option 1 might be more beneficial. A little advice/clarification would be great!

Use of subdomains, subdirectories or both?
Hello, i would like your advice on a dilemma i am facing. I am working a new project that is going to release soon, thats a network of users with personal profiles seperated in categories for example lets say the categories are colors. So let say i am a member and i belong in red color categorie and i got a page where i update my personal information/cv/resume as well as a personal blog thats on that page. So the main site is giving the option to user to search for members by the criteria of color. My first idea is that all users should own a subdomain (and this is how its developed so far) thats easy to use and since the domain name is really small (just 3 letters) i believe subdomain worth since personal site will be easy to remember. My dilemma is should all users own a subdomain, a subdirectory or both and if both witch one should be the canonical? Since it said that search engines treat subdomains as different stand-alone sites, whats best for the main site? to show multiple search results with profiles in subdomains or subdirectories? What if i use both? meaning in search results i use search directory url for each profile while same time each profile owns a subdomains as well? and if so which one should be the canonical? Thanks in advance, C

Joomla Plugins for SEO
Any input on which Joomla plugins could help us to facilitate the SEO on a client's site? Wordpress has some simple all-in-ones but we're not as familiar with Joomla and it doesn't look like that's the case. Thanks!

Domain Links or SubDomain Links, which is better?
Hi, I only now found out that www.domain.com and www.domain.com/ are different. Most of my external links are directed to www.domain.com/

Which I understand is considered the subdomain and not the domain. Should I redirect? (and if so how?)
Should I post new links only to my domain?0 -
If we add noindex to a subdomain, will the traffic to that subdomain still generate domain authority for the primary domain?
We are trying to decide whether a password protected site, that we will noindex, should be set up as a subdomain or if it should be its own domain. The determining factor here is whether or not having that noindexed subdomain will increase domain authority since its noindexed. Any ideas???
