Blog on Subdomain or Subdirectory?

I was wondering what the SEO impact was of having a blog on a sub domain or sub directory.
Which of the following is better?
Personally, I like making the blog a more important part of the site so 2) is preferable; however, I don't know which one is best for SEO purposes. Do the search engines consider a subdomain as a different website? Can SEO authority be passed through each equally?
What is your preference?

Hi Dino,
The consensus in the SEO community is that search engines still identify subdomains as separate sites (with respect to how domain authority is calculated and distributed throughout the Web graph).
Therefore, the second option (i.e., companysite.com/blog) is much better from an SEO perspective because it consolidates all of the website's content under a single site and maximizes the flow of authority through that site.

Directing a domain.com/BLOG to a different host

i cant seem to figure out how to approach this matter. we have a website and a domain setup in one place and we wanted to setup a blog for that website on a different hosting, what do i have to do to link between the two to make it so when a user type domain com /blog he will get to our blog that is hosted on a different hosting plan? with the blog hosting plan we received a temporary domain that does not expire but i have been told that if i redirect to that temporary domain it wont work correctly also, if we do manage to go through that process will accessing the blog will the URL show domain com/blog or will still show the temporary given domain? is my only option is buying a new domain and just link between the two? Blog.yoursite.com or yoursite.com/blog/?
Rand made the following post in 2009. In July of 2013 I question whether this is still best practice. Obviously, much has changed in our industry in four-and-a-half years! "...if you're seeking to maximize your ranking ability for a given piece of content, it's my personal belief that you should, most of the time, keep it on 1 subdomain under 1 root domain (but feel free to use subfolders as it makes sense). Optimizing a Wordpress Blog For SEO
Besides the standard Yoast for SEO plugin tweaks, I'm researching best practices when setting up a wordpress blog. In this instance, the "front end" of the site would be hardcoded static pages designed for an e-commerce site, while there would also be a /blog/ attached to the site - for blog posts, fresh content, etc.

Blog vs. News/Editorial Layout?
We're in the coupon blogging space & saw that one of the larger coupon sites move away from the more traditional blog layout: http://thekrazycouponlady.com they now have more of an editorial type layout. Here is another site which is more similar to our layout: http://hip2save.com. So here are my questions: Which layout type do you feel better serves their visitors & why? How does the affect the SEO of the site? How does it affect the advertising revenues? Which layout do you prefer? Is there strategy in this move for the coupon blog, or is this just a preference on how they now display their content? We're making some updates to our design soon & I wanted to get some feedback on the overall direction we take.

Blog via iframe or not?
We had our developers install Wordpress in the www.ourmainsite.com/blog directory. Our site is .NET based. Now we asked them to customize the blog's appearance to look like our main site. Here is the proposal from our developers to avoid lots of PHP coding: "In this approach we will create a custom page which will contain an iFrame in the body section. This iFrame will be solely responsible for showing all the blog pages. The template for Blog Pages will be designed in php (except the Header and Footer section). In Short, We will run the wordpress site (Blog) in our [main] Site" My Questions 1. Do the URLs have to stay the same for every page on the blog when using an iframe? (we want unique URLs for every page/post) 2. What are the SEO implications of this method? Will internal linking in the blog help pass all of the link juice throughout the main site and the blog? 3. How difficult is it to match the header, footer, and CSS (font/style/colors) of our main site in the Wordpress installation given that the site is .Net and Wordpress is PHP? Does spending some more time/money now to build everything in PHP without an iframe make sense in the long run? Thanks!

Making a third-party hosted blog look like a folder on the main domain
I have a client that has a "completely pristine" Microsoft.net web environment that is unwilling to put a wordpress installation on their server. Their management team wants a wordpress blog for the marketing department. Is there a means where we can host the wordpress blog with a regular hosting company but yet have it appear as part of the main site e.g., mainsite.com/blog vs. having to put it in a subdomain (blog.mainsite.com) and lose all the SEO benefits of the blog content?

Can "poor" subdomains drop PR of the root domain?
The page rank of my company's website has dropped from a 6 to a 4 over the past year or so. In that time, we implemented subdomains for development sites to show clients progress on their websites. I noticed that our "dev" sites are being indexed while in development and my question is, will Google drop pagerank of our root domain purely off of these "dev" subdomains? Example - our site is www.oursite.com Dev site - development1.oursite.com I just began investigating the drop and this came to my mind yesterday but am not too sure what type of impact these non-credible subdomains will have on our root domain. Any thoughts?
