404 errors is webmaster - should I 301 all pages?
-
Currently working on a retail site that shows over 1200 404 errors coming from urls that are from products that were on the site, but have now been removed as they are seasonal/out of stock.
What is the best way of dealing with this situation ongoing? I am aware of the fact that these 404s are being marked as url errors in Google Webmaster. Should I redirect these 404s to a more appropriate live page or should I leave them as they are and not redirect them? I am concerned that Google may give the site a penalty as these 404s are growing (as the site is a online retail store and has products removed from its page results regularly).
I thought Google was able to recognise 404s and after a set period of time would push them out of the error report.
Also is there a tool out there that on mass I can run all the 404s urls through to see their individual page strength and the number of links that point at each one?
Thanks.

Yep, a tough one. A good 404 page will still result in the original issue i.e. mounting 404 errors being reported by Google Webmaster. So where to go with this....
-
That's a tough one to answer. In a few years, the 301 redirects might get out of hand. Perhaps just creating a good 404 page with options to view other related products might work instead.

Thanks for the response. How do I manage the fact that in 4 years I may end up with a site that has over 3000 301s. Will this damage the site long term? Or is this workable (indeed is there a good period of time to remove 301s in, once they have served their purpose i.e. the redirection has been acknowledged by Google). I've heard that a large volume of 301s can influence site speed negatively and would like to avoid this and potential rank damage to the site. Any additional information would help.
Cheers

Instead of deleting a product can you instead just mark it as zero in stock / inventory? I'm not sure you still want the page to appear to visitors or not, but that might be the best way to avoid broken links. Just leave the page up and add a "not in stock" message to the page?
Otherwise, 301 redirects to an appropriate category or product might help. there might be external websites linking to some of these product pages and if you leave it as a 404, it will not pass link juice along, but if you do a 301, then the link juice can continue to follow.

Bogus Crawl Errors in Webmaster Tools?
I am suddenly seeing a ton of crawl errors in webmaster tools. Almost all of them are URL links coming from scraper sites.that I do not own. Do you see these in your Webmaster Tools account? Do you mark them as "fixed" if they are on a scraper site? There are waaaay too many of these to make redirects. Thanks!

Is it bad to have your pages as .php pages?
Hello everyone, Is it bad to have your website pages indexed as .php? For example, the contact page is site.com/contact.php and not /contact. Does this affect your SEO rankings in any way? Is it better to have your pages without the extension? Also, if I'm working with a news site and the urls are dynamic for every article (ie site.com/articleid=2323.) Should I change all of those dynamic urls to static? Thank You.

301 lots of old pages to home page
Will it hurt me if i redirect a few hundred old pages to my home page? I currently have a mess on my hands with many 404's showing up after moving my site to a new ecommerce server. We have been at the new server for 2 years but still have 337 404s showing up in google webmaster tools. I don't think it would affect users as very few people woudl find those old links but I don't want to mess with google. Also, how much are those 404s hurting my rank?

Do 301 redirects pass page rank quickly
Hi I have been asked to carry out a site audit for a potential client. The site has that many issues I don't where to start in explaining them however, there is one question we are debating and would like to get a second opinion on it. The site I am auditing used to have a homepage rank 7. The site has currently had a redesign (new template with new URLs) and now the root domain 301 redirects to a sub folder two levels deep (not ideal I know!). This happened about a month ago and we are still getting N/A for toolbar page rank. The question is, does Google page rank transfer quicker than normal due to the redirects? or do we still have to wait on the next Google Page Rank update? Thanks in advance Gavelect

404 Error on Spider Emulators
I recently began working at a company called Uncommon Goods. I ran a few different spider emulators on our homepage (uncommongoods.com) and I saw a 404 Error on SEO-browser.com as well as URL errors on Summit Media's emulator and SEOMoz's crawler. It seems there is a serious problem here. How is this affecting our site from an SEO standpoint? What are the repercussions? Also, I know we have a lot of javascript on our homepage..is this causing the 404? Any advice would be much appreciated. Thanks! -Zack
