Robots.txt: Syntax URL to disallow
-
Did someone ever experience some "collateral damages" when it's about "disallowing" some URLs?
Some old URLs are still present on our website and while we are "cleaning" them off the site (which takes time), I would like to to avoid their indexation through the robots.txt file.
The old URLs syntax is "/brand//13" while the new ones are "/brand/samsung/13." (note that there is 2 slash on the URL after the word "brand")
Do I risk to erase from the SERPs the new good URLs if I add to the robots.txt file the line "Disallow: /brand//" ?
I don't think so, but thank you to everyone who will be able to help me to clear this out
-
You could inadvertently block /brand/ altogether. Just because you use a // doesn't mean Google follows the same rules when crawling.
-
"I wouldn't risk telling a spider to ignore /brand// because it might have adverse results."
Which adverse results could be expected?
-
(because of the 404 error pages being constantly found in our pages)
Think of it this way:
Which is better? Re-routing traffic when it's congested or putting up a road block to back up even more traffic?Yes, it's more work to do the 301 redirects but if you have "pages being constantly found" you should give instructions to spiders to take the different path.
Now, if you are talking about an error such as:
/brand//samsung/13 SHOULD go to
/brand/samsung/13
Then you could EASILY solve this with HTACCESS redirects. I wouldn't risk telling a spider to ignore /brand// because it might have adverse results. -
Hi guys,
Thank you for your answers
I understand (and agree) with your SEO point of view (301 redirection) but I should have mentioned that these old URLs are leading to a 404 error page for a long time now, we are not considering anymore their SEO strength anymore...
My goal right now is to find a quick and simple way to tell search engines to not consider this type of old URLs (because of the 404 error pages being constantly found in our pages) : doing the 301 redirection to the right page would be a bit more complex at the moment.
So: do you think there is a risk that the second slash won't be "considered" in the robots.txt about the "disallow" line I want to add ? (= do search engines will stop to crawl URLs like "/brand/samsung/13" if I add the line "Disallow: /brand//" ?)

I'll further what Highland and Alex Chan are telling you. If you are using Apache (Linux) then you can redirect your old site links using a 301 redirect and .htaccess which is a very powerful tool. Otherwise, if you are using a IIS server, web.config is what you want to use.
A really good resource for .htassess is CSS-Tricks:Â http://css-tricks.com/snippets/htaccess/301-redirects/
-
Yup like Highland mentioned, using your robots.txt for this isn't a good idea. The robots.txt file isn't guaranteed to work anyway. The only sure fire way to get it working is to move all the URLs from the old structure to the new one, then 301 all the old URLs into the new URLs. The 301 minimizes loss to your SEO.
-
You really don't need a robots for that. I would either 301 the old URL (preferred) or have the old URL return a 404. Both will cause the old URL to be removed from the index. A robots nofollow simply leaves it up but tells the robots not to crawl it.

Hi to all, what is the best url structure, to have all words in the url or to tweak url like Yoast suggest? If we remove some words from url , not focus keyword but stop words and other keywords to have shorter url will that impact search rankings? example.com/one-because-two-for-three-on-four - long url, moz crawl error, yoast red light example.com/one-two-three-four - moz ok, yoast ok Where one is a focus keyword.

Changing URL to a subdomain?
Hi there, I had a website www.footballshirtcollective.com that has been live since July. Â It contains both content and eCommerce. I am now separating out the content so that; 1. Â The master domain is www.footballshirtcollective.com (content) pointing to a new site 2. Â Subdomain is store.footballshirtcollective.com (ecommerce) - pointing to the existing site. What do you advise I can do to minimise the impact on my search? Many thanks Mike

Redirecting a Few URLs to a New Domain
We are in the process of buying the blog section of a site. Â Let's say Site A is buying Site B. We have taken the content from Site B and replicated it on Site A, along with the exact url besides the TLD. Â We then issued 301 redirects from Site B to Site A and initiated a crawl on those original Site B urls so Google would understand they are now redirecting to Site A. The new urls for Site A, with the same content are now showing up in Google's index if we do a site:SiteA.com search on the big G. Anyone have any experience with this as to how long before Site A urls should replace Site B urls in the search results? I undestand there may be a ranking difference and CTR difference based on domain bias, etc... I'm just asking if everything goes as planned and there isn't a huge issue, does the process take weeks or months?

The "webmaster" disallowed all ROBOTS to fight spam! Help!!
One of the companies I do work for has a magento site. Â I am simply the SEO guy and they work the website through some developers who hold access to their systems VERY tightly. Â Using Google Webmaster Tools I saw that the robots.txt file was blocking ALL robots. I immediately e-mailed out and received a long reply about foreign robots and scrappers slowing down the website. Â They told me I would have to provide a list of only the good robots to allow in robots.txt. Please correct me if I'm wrong.. but isn't Robots.txt optional?? Won't a bad scrapper or bot still bog down the site? Â Shouldn't that be handled in httaccess or something different? I'm not new to SEO but I'm sure some of you who have been around longer have run into something like this and could provide some suggestions or resources I could use to plead my case! If I'm wrong.. please help me understand how we can meet both needs of allowing bots to visit the site but prevent the 'bad' ones. Â Their claim is the site is bombarded by tons and tons of bots that have slowed down performance. Thanks in advance for your help!

How to deal with URLs and tabbed content
Hi All, We're currently redesigning a website for a new home developer and we're trying to figure out the best way to deal with tabbed content in the URL structure. The design of the site at the moment will have a page for a development and within that you can select your house type, then when on the house type page there will be tabs displayed for the user to see things like the plot map, availability and pricing, specifications, etc. The way our development team are looking at handling this is for the URL to use a hashtag or a query string at the end of it so we can still land users on these specific tabs for PPC for example. My question is really, has anyone had any experience with this? Any recommendations on how to best display the urls for SEO? Thanks

If I own a .com url and also have the same url with .net, .info, .org, will I want to point them to the .com IP address?
I have a domain, for example, mydomain.com and I purchased mydomain.net, mydomain.info, and mydomain.org. Â Should I point the host @ to the IP where the .com is hosted in wpengine? I am not doing anything with the .org, .info, .net domains. Â I simply purchased them to prevent competitors from buying the domains.
