Looking for an e-commerce CMS that can deal properly with facets and filters
-
Hi!
One of my clients has an online shop built on a custom platform. Following my on-page audit, I found multiple issues with the faceted & filtered navigation.
After doing some research, I've developed a good site architecture based both on keyword targeting and on user experience. Since the client's platform is custom and he is no longer in contact with the original webmaster, I'm looking to recommend an e-commerce CMS that would fix the issues he has and allow for proper navigation using facets + filters.
I'll give you an idea of how I've envisioned the new site architecture (with a random example):
The website has 3 main categories:
- Jackets
- Shoes
- Pants
These categories are completely separated, no products exist in more than one category.
Let's take the Shoes category. It has the following facets (these are like subcategories, in the form of links, indexable by the search engines):
-
By Brand:
-
Brand 1
-
Brand 2
-
Brand 3
-
By Genre
-
Men
-
Women
-
Unisex
-
By Type
-
Running
-
Flip-Flops
-
Boots
Each product of the Shoes category will belong to one of each facets (so you can have a product that belongs to Brand 1, for Women, of the "boots" type).
Now, each of these facets also display filters depending on the facet itself. These are non-indexable, and preferably done through AJAX. For example, if I select Shoes -> Men I get a list of filters that can also include options from the other facets (so I'll have filters for "Size", but also for "Brand" and "Type"). When I select Shoes -> Boots I won't have the "Type" filter anymore (or I can have it pre-selected I guess), but I will have the "Size" and "Brand" filters.
So, what I am looking for is for a CMS that can allow product attributes (like "Type", "Genre" or "Brand") to be used both as facet categories as well as filters.
The closest live example I could find is ASOS, where you can search products by Brand (facet) and have the refined afterwards by Type (filter) or you can search products by Type (facet) and refine them by Brand (filter).
So, any idea of an e-commerce CMS that would allow me to do the above (bonus points if it also allows entering descriptions for facets, similar to what ASOS does)?
Thanks!

If I understand correctly, by adding multiple categories to each product, you should get the search functionality your looking for. Both systems allow the products to be tagged with multiple categories. I'm sorry that I'm not terribly familiar with the technical side of either system, but both are easy to use and all the products (and variations) seem to be indexed by search spiders.
Definitely check them out!

Thanks Dubs! Would any of these be able to do what I mentioned in my post?

Hey @Mihai,
I've only worked with a few eCommerce systems and found that the two most SEO friendly are:
- Fission system eCommerce - http://www.360psg.com/fission-commerce
- WordPress eCommerce Plugin - http://getshopped.org/wordpress-commerce
Both systems are very customizable but neither are FREE solutions. When it comes to an eCommerce system, I feel your better off using a paid service with tech support. I hope these systems meet your needs!

How can i get a higher ranking
Hey All, As a rookie on SEO, I optimised this page http://www.nhad.de/fernstudium/sprachkurse/arabisch/sprachkurse-arabisch/arabisch.aspx for the keywords Arabisch lernen. I saw a huge improvement from position 100+ to position 45. but now it's stuck around this position. Are there any things I missed on this page? Are there still things to increase the ranking? I hope to learn from you. thanks in advance!

Can I robots.txt an entire site to get rid of Duplicate content?
I am in the process of implementing Zendesk and will have two separate Zendesk sites with the same content to serve two separate user groups (for the same product-- B2B and B2C). Zendesk does not allow me the option to changed canonicals (nor meta tags). If I robots.txt one of the Zendesk sites, will that cover me for duplicate content with Google? Is that a good option? Is there a better option. I will also have to change some of the canonicals on my site (mysite.com) to use the zendesk canonicals (zendesk.mysite.com) to avoid duplicate content. Will I lose ranking by changing the established page canonicals on my site go to the new subdomain (only option offered through Zendesk)? Thank you.

SEO can id and class be used in H1?
Can ID and class be used in my H1 tag. I realize best case would be to change it, but it's going to require a change order from the ecommerce company to fix their sloppy code. Will this hurt seo? Example:

How can i make my sub-domain bring in more traffic?
we have a social networking site that has user-generated content and users have to log in before they can access the platform. We are in the process of creating indexable pages that google bots can pick up. These pages will sit in front of the log in pages and will be open for guest access. Can you advise on the best way of optimising these pages for higher ranking and traffic.

Does 'XXX' in Domain get filtered by Google
I have a friend that has xxx in there domain and they are a religious based sex/porn addiction company but they don't show up for the queries that they are optimized against. They have a 12+ year old domain, all good health signs in quality links and press from trusted companies. Google sends them adult traffic, mostly 'trolls' and not the users they are looking for. Has anyone experienced domain word filtering and have a work around or solution? I posted in the Google Webmaster help forums and that community seems a little 'high on their horses' and are trying to hard to be cool. I am not too religious and don't necessarily support the views of the website but just trying to help a friend of a friend with a topic that I have never encountered. here is the url: xxxchurch.com Thanks, Brian

How can I get on-page analysis reports ?
I started trying out seomoz' facilities as a way to give myself a checklist of things to do-and-don't while learning SEO. Faced with a ton of new and interesting information, I started optimizing my home page and writing some content that can tell a story to people in my business. So I started using on-page analysis tools. But the campaign opening screen is telling me to wait for reports approx. two weeks. There are some reports ( not so good ones, a lot to improve ) but not the one I need most: the on-page analysis one. I set up two campaigns and I have the same problem for both. Am I doing something wrong ? Can I change my pages to make this work ?

How can I stop google reading a certain section of text with my H1 tag?
Hey Mozzers, I'm wondering if anybody knows of a way that I can stop google reading a certain part of text within my H1 texts? My issue is that I have individual office pages on my site, but many offices are based in the same city; such as 'London'. I want to keep London within the H1 tag for user experience but I do not want it to be picked up by the search engines and start a canonical issue. I've seen some people say to use document.write or use an image. Does anybody know of a correct way of doing this? Many Thanks.

My blog title is getting added to my post title and I can't figure out how to remove it
Hello everyone, I am sure most of you guys know how to do this. I am finding that when my posts are listed in google, my blog title is added to my post title. 2 questions. 1. Is this hurting my rankings because the blog title is diluting my keywords making it look like I have a huge title? (the on page optimizer is dinging me for this. 2. I use a self hosted wordpress blog with the all in one seo plugin. Does anyone know how to remove the blog title from being appended to the post title? I thought I could do that in all in one seo by checking the rewrite title box and just having it say %post_title% but that didn't fix it. Also it was doing it before I checked that box as well. Any other ideas to try? Thanks
