Is International Geotargeting with Duplicate Content Effective?
-
A company located in Canada is currently targeting Canada through the geotargeting setting in Google Webmaster Tools. Google.ca rankings are good, but Google.com rankings are not. The company would like to gain more traction for US people using google.com.
The idea on the table is to set up a subfolder www.domain.com/us/ and use WMT to designate this version for the US.
Here's the kicker: the content is exactly the same.
Will Google consider the US version duplicate content? Is this an effective way to target US and Canada at the same time? Is it better to forget a duplicate US site altogether and use the "unlisted" setting in WMT?

Hi Rui,
I see what you mean, we just redirect our .co.uk domain with the ISP to the .com one as it was being treated as a low quality domain. It was something like a .com DA of 68 as opposed to a co.uk DA of 16 (bizarre why that was happening). After that our content in SERPs was/is balanced across all the countries in question.
Personally I like to partner with people in these countries, help them write content with our PR people and optimize the content for their countries. I know not everyone has the facility to do this but I find it drives traffic well from these countries on content that was originally written in the UK but tailored for say an Australian audience i.e. 'If it walks like a duck and quacks like a duck it probably is a duck!' in other words the more localised the content can be the better when trying to work in other countries.
Cheers

Thanks, David.
I do have some sites that has country level targeting (.com.au and .co.uk) which are ranking in Google.com as well as Google UK & Google Australia.
I thought what you meant was that I wouldn't lose the UK and Australian rankings if I switched off geotargeting

Sorry, seems I forgot to say that the current domain is a .com...

I would be more inclined to say that other factors are at play to how my ranks appeared in other countries other than the one I reside and work in. My site does not really have a country level target so geo-targeting would not be a strategic/necessary tool for me. My approach here would be to leave it to the search engines to determine if the value/quality of your content to searchers in other countries and not feel that just by using geo-targeting in GWT that it is actually going to improve your presence in a specific target country.
Here I have 2 stories that are optimised for specific keyword phrases. One story is from Ontario, Canada and the other Atlanta, US. I don't think about them in the sense that the first should be geared towards Canadians and the other Americans, more important are the thematics of the stories that should be deemed more importantly than a searchers geographic location.

http://www.instantatlas.com/CDC_Story.xhtmlI asked Rand a similar question years ago about geo-targeting and from memory I think he said this feature is not active on the Moz site (at the time) as they want the site to be available to all, irrespective of what country the reside in.

Did your rankings improve for Canada/US after you turned off targeting?
-
This is fairly new to me so I'd like to know the answer to your question as well..
From the brief research I've done, I've read somewhat conflicting info. I've read that you could implement the rel=alternate tag on the geo-targeted page/subfolder that contains the dupe content. This will tell Google which page is the preferred version but for people searching in the targeted location it would return the geo-targeted page. (If its in a different language, you'd include the hreflang tag as well)
On the other hand, I also read that you cant geo target different countries if you have a country specific domain. So for example, website.ca is dedicated to serving canada results, and therefore cant geo target US. You can only geo-target when you have international domains (.com, .net, ,org etc.) I'm not sure how true this is, and cant find a source that explains this in detail.
If someone has experience in implementing geo-targeting with success (languages/locations/country specific domains etc) i'd also appreciate some clarification.

Agreed it will be flagged as duplicate content and personally speaking I would not set geo-targeting to Canada I'd just leave it off targeting completely. Done it like this for years and my ranks for my target keyword phrases are near the same irrespective of Canada or the US and my site is actually a UK domain.
I always find this tricky about the type of domain as well so as Irving is saying a .com would be helpful, with unique content and I guess 'maybe' the domain should be understood by Google to actually reside within the US i.e. hosted there. You might want to look into the importance of a domains registered geo-location these days - but that might just be old paranoia on my part.
However, ultimately content should be king with a good link quality strategy, can the owner of the domain for instance attain & build good US based root domain links?

Yes it's still duplicate content. Also, you almost never see a .ca domain ranking in the US. If the US market is big enough they should consider buying a .com and making unique content got the .com site.

Question about International SEO
We've just recently launched our website in Canada and our web crawler is showing some pages with "&Country=CA", even if the current page already includes Country=CA. Why is this and how would we go about resolving?

Help with international targeting
Hi all! Okay, so we've got a site, let's say example.com - we sell training courses worldwide with a particular focus in just 8 countries.
International SEO | | JamieM1611
Historically, we've never targeted users in different countries effectively, we've just got the example.com that floats about ranking in different countries, but our content is dynamic (obviously a big SEO no-no - we pick up the IP of the user and show the content relevant for that country without the URL's changing)
This obviously presents an SEO flaw in that we can effectively target people in our key countries effectively. So, we're introducing the targeting as subfolders (/uk/, /ie/ etc) my questions are: 1. Would this be the correct implementation of hreflang AND canonical tags for the URL: https://www.example.com/es/ 2. The second thing I was wondering is the 'international targeting' in search console. We haven't (because of our current set up) set a target country for www.example.com (because of the lack of regional targeting and dynamic catch all) - would we be better leaving that untargeted and only specifying the regional targets for the new subfolder URLs (www.example.com/us/ /uk/ etc) or should we set the .com as the USA as default? We'd be a bit weary of doing this because most of our traffic comes from the UK and South Africa, so I'm assuming it would be best to leave this alone unless someone else has a different opinion? I know Googlebot almost always crawls .coms from US, which is why we were thinking of leaving the .com as the 'catch all' and specifying the US version. 3. Finally, we do have a lot pages which don't really change at all (like the about us page) would we give these any special directives to avoid duplicate content (as the content on these won't be changing at all?) or do we just keep the structure as shown above? I.E would the about us page (even though not changing) still be (with the canonical): URL: https://www.example.com/about-us/ (x-default) ? Thanks in advance!0 -
Does not having any hreflang tags for U.S Visitors lead to an increase in International Visitors?
I have seen a massive increase in International Visitors on our website and visitors within the United States dropped off hard this month (by about 20%). Could it be possible that not having any hreflang tags can lead to an increase in International Customers visiting the site even though your sitemap is set to "Target users in United States" within the Google Search Console? In the Google Search Console, I have International Targeting set to "Target users in United States." However, Google Search Console is saying our site doesn't have any hreflang tags. In the Google Search Console, it says "Your site has no hreflang tags. Google uses hreflang tags to match the user's language preference to the right variation of your pages." I'm not sure when that was flagged, but recently we have seen a massive increase in International Visitors to our site from countries such as Russia, Vietnam, Indonesia, the United Kingdom and so on. This poses a problem since our chances of turning one of those visitors into a customer is extremely slim. Along with that, nearly every international customer is contributing to an extremely high Bounce Rate. Attached is a screenshot of the Error about hreflang tags. https://imgur.com/a/XZI45Pw And here is a screenshot of the Country we are targeting. https://imgur.com/a/ArpWe9Z Lastly, attached is a screenshot of all of the Countries that visited our site today: https://imgur.com/a/d0tNwkI

Need help with search results for US site for a compnay that has many international sites
I am tasked with optimizing a US site for a company that has many international sites. Currently, if you search for just the main company name and don't include "USA" in your search, it won't even give you the US site on the SERP. It displays the Italian, French, etc etc sites - even though I'm searching on Google in the US with a preferred language of Engilsh. Unfortunately I don't have any control over the other sites, only the US one. Is there anything I can add to the US site (aside from setting the country code in GSC) so that when someone searches from within the USA, they get the US site and not all of the other ones? thanks!

URL structure of international hotel website
Hai all, Question about URL structure of international hotel website in Amsterdam: hotelcitadel.nl. Some information: - Target group are mainly english speaking guests from UK and US. Besides that guests from the Netherlands and some other countries. - Website in 6 languages. - No geo-targetting; just language targetting with hreflang annotations. Current situation: hotelcitadel.nl = dutch language version and hotelcitadel.nl/en = english language version We are thinking about changing this to: hotelcitadel.nl would become english version and hotelcitadel.nl/nl would become the dutch version. Reason: root domain hotelcitadel.nl has by far the most links, and making the root domain the english version could help the rankings in english speaking countries like UK and US. What do you think, would this be a wise idea? Regards, Maurice

How to handle different content on same domain internationally?
Dear community, I have encountered a unique situation and I am unsure as how to proceed, I have a U.S. based website for intentions of this question is www.musicstore.com. The customer has decided to offer their products up for sale internationally, however, has two business requirements, one is that his international presence differs with product offering and content then the domestic version and two, that they both live on the same domain of www.musicstore.com without any reference to offering a differing international presence. Many of his products are offered for purchase directly overseas, while not against his suppliers rules, it is frowned upon. All this said, now to my question. I'm currently running a Magento two website install. With GeoIP setting which version of www.musicstore.com is presented. Do I have to worry about different content being displayed on the same exact url even though the experience is completely location based? If it is a concern, any risks I should be concerned with. I could possibly do something along the lines of www.musicstore.com/in/ while this is not ideal for the customer, if it prevents many larger issues I'd steer the customer this way. I just want my customer to be able to sell his product internationally without upsetting his suppliers or making Google go, what does this site actually have. Hopefully I explained my question well enough for those who can help to understand. Please ask if you need any more information. Any help would be greatly appreciated, thank you.

International SEO
Anyone have any good free resources for international SEO best practices? I've read through most of the common stuff and wondered if there's anything I'm missing. We are getting ready to launch a version of our website in the UK and I could use any hints or advice that could make my life easier. My biggest question is whether to keep the sites as 1 site (single domain with sub-folder for sharing incoming link profile) or to get a .UK domain and do everything from scratch. (it seems like a sub-domain is not the way to go?). I also wonder if any of you can share things to look out for, pitfalls, mistakes, etc...? TIA for any help/answers!

Geotargeting two locations using root and /country
Hello, I am in the process of turning my UK targeted website into a global website in multiple languages. I will be using the new HREFLANG tag but I'm wondering about geotargeting. I've set this up in Webmaster Tools as: example.com = UK content
International SEO | | Seaward-Group
example.com/us = US content
example.com/de = German content
example.com/es = Spanish content
example.com/fr = French content
example.com/it = Italian content
example.com/nl = Dutch content Will the root UK content override the following sub directories that are set as a different location because its not /uk? Thank you.0
