480,000 Redirects - Is this hurting my SEO? PLEASE HELP!
-
Hello everyone,
I have over 480,000 internal rewrites in my Magento site. The reason I have so many is because I have over 1,500 products on my site and I update inventory every day via Bulk Import Extension. For the first few months I didn't realize that the URL was changing by a single digit every time I imported the .xml with new inventory counts. This of course created thousands and thousands of 404s.
I figured out how to avoid the digit change and then I started redirecting the 404s via a Bulk Rewrite Extension. I managed to rewrite over over 50,000 404s but new ones still pop up every day and there is no end to them in sight.
My traffic is terrible. Only about 40 organics daily. It's been like that for months. I can't get it off the ground and I think it's because of this excessive rewrite and 404 issue.
My question is, does having so many internal rewrites and 404s hurt my SEO efforts?
Would it be better just to start from scratch with a new site, new domain, new everything?
Please help me. I'm going crazy with this. Thank you.
Nico.

Thank you Everett. You don't know how much this helps me. I was dreading having to start the site from scratch, so I will continue with the one I have and work on it for as along as it takes. This is the site by the way: http://devilswink.com/
Do you offer SEO consulting services for small businesses in the U.S. Everret?

Nico,
Great question. Technically speaking, a permanent 301 redirect should stay up indefinitely. However, I have heard more than one Google employee say publicly that they should stay up for "at least a year". At that point I think you can take them down and the destination page will retain the link juice from the old links since Google will have supposedly updated their link graph. However, I don't trust that most Google employees really know what's going on under the hood all the time, and recommend leaving any redirects from pages with external links in place for as long as you have control over it (e.g. you obviously couldn't leave them in place across domains if you sold the old domain).
If the page doesn't have any internal or external links pointing to it you can safely remove the 301 redirect at any time. A year would be plenty.

Hi Everett,
Thank you very much for your feedback.
This does put me at ease because I was ready to pull the plug and start a new site from scratch.
Quick question, do old Rewrites disappear after a while? In others words, do they keep getting crawled?
If so, can I deleted them after a few months for example, or after a year, or do search engines need them to exist permanently because other wise they would generate new 404s?
Thank you.
Nico.

Hello Nico.
I think I have some good news for you. Unless there is live link to those URLs (internal or external) there is no need to redirect them. In my experience more than 99% (an educated guess) of product pages do not have any external links. So assuming you have not cleaned up your internal linking (if you haven't, you should) there really is no need for the 301 and you can just let it resolve as a 404.
As long as the old URLs return a 404 status code they should be removed from the index within a matter of weeks. However, if they don't have any external or internal links - again, most of those pages probably do not - it may take months for Google to decide to recrawl an indexed page without any link paths to it. Googlebot couldn't just "crawl" its way there, but would have to retrieve the URL from a database just to check it, which would take longer. I have a tested and recommended solution to this issue, which can be found here on the Moz.com blog.

Redirecting an Entire Website?
Is it best to redirect an old website to a new website page by page to like pages or just the entire site all at once to the home page of the new site? I do have about 10 good pages on the site that are worth directing to corresponding pages on the new site. Just trying to figure out what is going to preserve the most link juice. Thanks for the help!

Heroku, Subdomains, redirecting to different servers & SEO
Hi all, I've got a big question. I'm helping out with digital marketing at a non-profit that I volunteer with. We're working on developing an on site blog for our site, because we've realized we need that middle of the funnel content. Our issue has been taking up much of the developers' time & we're really working out the kinks with the system, so I'm trying to alleviate that with a light blog solution. We're considering installing a wordpress site on a separate server from the main site & sending traffic over to that. The primary questions: Do we negatively impact our main site by having a link to a different domain in the topnav? Do we positively impact the main site by developing SEO content on a redirected&masked URL? What are the ramifications of redirecting a subdomain to another server? Would we be better off using something like Ghost? A good example would be: Visit theMainDomain

Redirect to: theSecondDomain/blog [masked as theMainDomain/blog]
Click: home on topnav

Plugins and SEO
I'd like some expert guidance. I've searched for a theme that does what I want and finally found something I like, but I'm wondering what you all think I should do to increase it's searchability. The plugin has all the listings and styling. All I need to do is past the code into the wordpress site ad voila! I have a page. Using the widget lets me allow upvotes and provide map etc. But it means the content is inside the widget instead of on the page. What would you modify if you wanted to keep the theme & widget to get the best results. http://best-of-sacramento.com/dentists This is my staging site.

IP redirect possible SEO issues?
Hi I help manage a small eCommerce business that sells worldwide. We currently have 4 stores www.tidy-books.com (US site) www.tidy-books.co.uk (UK) www.tidy-books.eu (EU) www.tidy-bboks.com.au (AU) We have auto redirect based on the country of your IP. The .com is the route address though. Currently I have decided to focus all my energies with link building etc on .com as it seems to carry the most weight and being a very small team we don't have the resources for separate campaigns for all websites at the moment. Whilst I've done on site SEO with country in mind i.e for US kids instead of children. I'm just wondering if you can see any pitfalls in this approach, Ideally I would like to have a team focus on each store separately and have them as separate domains but with the IP redirect we at least rank well in Google for the .com and the customers gets sent to the relevant store. Any thoughts would be great

.htaccess help please
Hi there, Can anyone let me know what I need to add to my .htaccess file to make sure that the trailing slash on my domain gets redirected to my main domain name. For example, at the moment Google is seeing my primary domain as follows: http://www.mydomain.com http://www.mydomain.com/ I thought I'd covered off all possible duplication penalities but it look as though I've still got one left! Thanks very much for your help, Simon

Is my 301 redirect working?
Very simple question here . I've redirected a bunch of older pages with decent ranking to some newer pages on my site, using the Thesis theme's built-in redirect function. However, in the SERPS, the older pages (and, importantly, older titles) still show up. When clicked on, they redirect to the new page, but it's still irritating because the older titles make the site look out of date. Is this Working As Intended, or have I or my theme done something wrong? And if it's the latter, what's the best way to achieve a redirect, preferably with a Wordpress plugin?

SEO Developers
I have a team of inexperienced SEO developers and the argument we continually have is that its a marketing role - however most of it is technical, no view state, no js, page load time, csssprite, metatags, frequency of updates to server, duplicate content via coding methodology, lioading content prior to ads, not spidering ads (IT says impossible yet google says required) etc. I looked at your referrals for developers and couldnt find any that recognized SEO as part of their skill set - do you believe tehre aer developers that specialize in this? Thanks, Michelle
