Switching Url
-
I started working with a Roofer/Contractor about a year ago. His website is http://www.lancasterparoofing.com/. The name of his business is Spicher Home Improvements. He used to have spicherhomeimprovements.com, well he still does.
He was focusing on Roofing and Siding but now would like to branch to other areas like Interior remodeling. So adding interior work under LancasterPaRoofing.com is not applicable. I do not think starting another domain and having two is the best option.
I think he should go back to using SpicherHomeImprovements.com and I assume he would take a small hit but in time he should be better off.
Plus the url is more applicable to the real name of his business.
Thanks for any feedback I receive.
Chad

Chad, if I would have been at your place, I would have gone to the same option as you are going.
It’s not search engine only but you have to care about users as well… Although search engine might understand that your domain name is focusing one service but you are offering additional services under the same umbrella but for people you should be clear that you are offering related services as well and not sticking up to roofing only.
My idea is to go with the company names domain and 301 the current website to the new domain page by page so that page level link juice can be transferred. Due to redirection a bit of a link juice will be lost but powerful content marketing and link building can help it regain their positions.
Hope this helps!

Hey Chad,
He will definitely loose some value, however, if there's still some juice flowing from the old domain, regaining it will get that "loss" that you were having redirecting to the new domain back.
I agree with your idea, it will be much better if he use the old domain instead and cover all the services he provides.
Remember to follow all the necessary steps when changing the domain, 301 the entire domain to the old one, changing it via GWT, etc. The loss should be minimum, it will be noticeable during the first 1 - 3 month, but in the long run it should be a win.
Hope that helps!

Hi Chad,
A domain with 'roofing' in it could be confusing if the business offers additional services, however is not the end of the world if your search engine result page snippets clearly outline what services are provided (i.e. title tag and meta description).
In an ideal world you would never change URLs, especially not the root domain as you can lose SEO goodness of that page. But if you need to then be sure to use a permanent 301 redirect from the old URL to the new one and make the links from relative pages (e.g. use a 301 redirect from www.LancasterPaRoofing.com/waterblastering and point to www.spicherhomeimprovements.com/waterblastering). You will also need to inform Google of the new domain via Google Webmaster Tools. And, you should manually go and update URLs on external websites. You will need to keep the old website live for at least 6 months.
Good luck,
Davinia

URL indexed but not submitted in sitemap, however the URL is in the sitemap
Dear Community, I have the following problem and would be super helpful if you guys would be able to help. Cheers Symptoms : On the search console, Google says that some of our old URLs are indexed but not submitted in sitemap However, those URLs are in the sitemap Also the sitemap as been successfully submitted. No error message Potential explanation : We have an automatic cache clearing process within the company once a day. In the sitemap, we use this as last modification date. Let's imagine url www.example.com/hello was modified last time in 2017. But because the cache is cleared daily, in the sitemap we will have last modified : yesterday, even if the content of the page did not changed since 2017. We have a Z after sitemap time, can it be that the bot does not understands the time format ? We have in the sitemap only http URL. And our HTTPS URLs are not in the sitemap What do you think?

Best way to structure urls wordpress and Yoast?
I am using Wordpress and Yoast. I have Parent pages and child pages. Yoast recommends you have the keyword in the url. For the parent page I have the city name in the url. Question is, should the child pages also have the city name in the url or would that be considered keyword stuffing? Here is the current structure. http://forestparkdental.info/st-louis-dental-services/restorative-dentistry/inlays-and-onlays So didn't know if should have the end of that url as /restorative-dentistry-st-louis /inlays-and-onlays-st louis since those are separate pages and Yoast and Moz plugin doesn't give you the Green light in in all areas unless you do it like this? Thanks Scott

Is it a problem if a URL has too many backslashes in its address?
The ecommerce platform of the site that I am working on generates URLs that contain ID Codes for each different product category, color variations, styles, etc. An example of a URL for a specific product includes: www.example.com/women/denim-jeans/py/c/109/np/108/p/3834.html Is it a problem for search engine crawlers if the URL address has so many backslashes in its address? Appreciate your feedback.

SEO within the URL /
If I were optimizing for 'marketing success' and my URL structure was domain.com/marketing/success would that count? I'm not sure if the '/' affects the keyword term. My assumption is that it does, but I wasn't 100% sure. Thanks!

Hash URLs
Hi Mozzers, Happy Friday! I have a client that has created some really nice pages from their old content and we want to redirect the old ones to the new pages. The way the web developers have built these new pages is to use hashbang url's for example www.website.co.uk/product#newpage My question is can I redirect urls to these kind of pages? Would it be using the .htaccess file to do it? Thanks in advance, Karl

Canonical URL Question
Hi Everyone I like to run this question by the community and get a second opinion on best practices for an issue that I ran into. I got two pages, Page A is the original page and Page B is the page with duplicate content. We already added** ="Page A**" />** to the duplicate content (Page B).** **Here is my question, since Page B is duplicate content and there is a link rel="canonical" added to it, would you put in the time to add meta tags and optimize the title of the page? Thanks in advance for all your help.**

Changing my url name? Should I do it?
Hi, I am targeting a brand called Creative Recreation, who are a trainers brand. We currently rank ok-ish for certain terms for Creative Recreation Trainers, Footwear and Creative Recreation [INSERT STYLE NAME HERE]. Our main search term I think we would like to improve on is "creative recreation trainers" as we are 6th for this. Our domain name points to the brands page as designerboutique-online.com/all-clothing/creative-recreation/ Now what I want to know is, would it be worthwhile or would it affect my current rank/index if I changed the end of that url to read /creative-recreation-trainers/ thus getting the keyword phrase in the url? Creative-Recreation is a hard one to crack as you have a lot of competition from the brands site etc.. Any ideas on this? Cheers Will
