Best to Spend Marketing Budget on High Quality Articles OR Link Building Services?
-
Greeting MOZ Community:
My site has 400 domains linking to it of which about 180 are toxic and 180 are suspicious according to a site audit from a reputable SEO firm. The SEO firm is offering link removal and link building services to remedy the situation.
My question is this: if I can create and post high quality blog articles on a very regular basis, will this in and of itself create high quality links to my site? If the articles are of exceptional quality can I post them elsewhere to earn quality links?
Does it make more sense to use my budget on paying a PR agency to create high quality articles and posting them on my blog or elsewhere rather than spending on an SEO link building campaign? Should I do both?
I plan on having the SEO firm remove toxic links and optimize content using Yoast. But I want to be careful about not wasting my budget if the links will develop naturally if I post the content online myself. I am more inclined to have an SEO pro work on creating links but why pay if I can do it myself.
Any thoughts?

Quality content properly promoted is the ultimate link building strategy.
Consider how many artificial link building strategies from the past have eventually caused site owners problems.
I'd post to your site first and when I was sure it was indexed, re-purpose it for social media.
Best of luck!

**So assuming I can create content that is unique interesting and engaging, where should I post it? My website blog, Google+, Facebook, LinkedIn an off site blog? **
I post my articles on my own site only. I don't give them to anyone else. I want my site to be the go-to place for the topics that I write about. When I write an article my intent is that it will be the best on the web for that topic or truly exceptional for some aspect of that topic.
So if I can create the content, how do I address the issue of optimizing and submitting to the appropriate places. Would an SEO firm add value in this area assuming they are pros and only engage in white hat?
I have a blog that gets a few very short posts each day about industry news. These are simply a sentence or two about an interesting article and a link (these posts are noindexed btw but they do go on category pages). That blog has slowly accumulated thousands of subscribers. When I post a new article on my site I add a link to it in my news and that usually results in a blast of immediate traffic, shares etc.
I don't use social media myself. My visitors do that for me without an prompt, request or incentive from me. To make that happen you need content that they want to share.
Obviously I would prefer to allocate my budget to creating high value content and more of it. Which not hiring an SEO firm would allow me to do. But I don't wan to be penny wise and pound foolish.
You have to be honest with your self and have courage. Honest that your content is good enough to merit sharing. If it isn't then the method that I suggest will not be successful. And you must be brave enough to stay on this path long enough to let it start building.

No that is an interesting!!!

As far as I'm concerned, SEO link building today is content creation and distribution (social, etc). So, to me it sounds like you are trying to choose between two of the same thing. What other link building services are there out there these days that doesn't violate Google's guidelines?
If you accept my premise, then your choice is simply whether you think a PR firm or an SEO firm would do a better job of making sure the content you are creating is as engaging as possible and reaches as many people as possible. It's all about creating remarkable content, building an audience, and trying to get social/search traffic (to further build your audience).

If you have an article that is truly exceptional it can very slowly accumulate links as long as you have traffic into it. If the article is truly exceptional and it gets shared on social media that can sometimes be like throwing gasoline on a fire - but this best happens when the content topic is a bit provocative, surprising, funny, beautiful or possesses some other attribute that triggers sharing.
If you have an article that accumulates just two natural links per year that can become a major force over time. How? Because if you have two hundred of those articles on your site then you have four hundred natural quality links coming in per year and that is better than one new link every day.
Most important, the quality of the links that you will get from this are 10x as valuable as those produced by the typical linkbuilder. The typical linkbuilder is going to get you into a Penguin problem in his push to produce results. Now that is going to make most of the linkbuilders who read this reach straight for the thumbs down - but look around and see how many people come here crying about a Penguin problem and how many people come in here asking how to build links.
Most people will not take the content route, because exceptional content is really expensive and requires hard work. But if you go that route you will eventually have enough content on your site that its performance will be equal to having one of the most highly skilled linkbuilders working on your site full time 24x7.
This is how great content can defeat SEO over time. But most people will not try this because they fail in budget, creativity, content knowledge, time, patience or faith.
The greatest risks in taking this path is that your opinion of great content is set too low or you decide to start taking shortcuts. You need content that is of the same quality as an article on National Geographic, the New York Times or one of the many posts that you read on the Moz.com blog.

I don't have the best answer here for that, and look forward to others chiming in. I was just afraid you were going to spend money to have someone who didn't know your field write up content for you, and glad to hear that people involved in the industry are involved in the authorship.

Hi Keri:
Thanks for your response!!
Well i am writing the content and have a PR agency making it more engaging, incorporating a strong call to action organizing in order to create a piece which is very informative while at the same time being entertaining.
So would something that is written more skillfully create more quality links than an article created by an SEO firm, maybe being better optimized but not as engaging? DO I spend my budget on superb content or on good content by an SEO expert who may have a better idea of where to get links?
Thanks,
Alan

A bit cynical here, but would a PR agency be able to create high-quality content that's relevant to your industry? Or would your time and money (for that type of content) be better spent having someone with knowledge of your industry (perhaps in your company) writing and paying for an editor to polish the content?

Footer no follow links
Just interested to know when putting links at the foot of the site some people use no-follow tags. I'm thinking about internal pages and social networks. Is this still necessary or is it an old-fashioned idea?

How would you link build to this page?
Hi Guys, I'm looking to build links to a commercial page similar to this: https://apolloblinds.com.au/venetian-blinds/ How would you even create quality links (not against Google TOS) to a commercial page like that? Any ideas would be very much appreciated. Cheers.

Does adding more outgoing links on a high PA page decrease the juice passed to previous links?
Hi, I'm not sure how PA DA exactly works when the goal is to create backlinks to your site in order to have the most impact on passing PA DA juice (if there is such a thing) to ones money site. For example let's say you have a blog and the PA is 40 DA is 30. Let's say I create a backlink pointing to my site on the homepage of this blog, in which I desire better rankings for, and the links I created are only 1-3 outgoing links on this post which is again on the homepage. Then say in a months time, I want to add another post on the homepage (so the 40 PA and 30 DA stays the same) creating a backlink to one of my other money sites. Does adding this second round of backlinks result in sending less juice to the first? This is what I want to know. Thank you!

Spammy Inbound Links
Hello, We have been using Zendesk to manage our customer support tickets for approx 2 years. We recently noticed that the attached forum had lot's of spam comments attached to it. Promoting Viagra and the like. The system was installed as a subdomain of my site support.mysite.com We have since deleted our account with Zendesk but Moz and Google are reporting loads of inbound links to that subdomain that are all total spam with Viagra in the anchor text etc. The subdomain no longer exists and now throws a 404. Can these links still hurt me? Is there other steps I need to take? I have disavowed all the links.

Do I have to many internal links which is diluting link juice to less important pages
Hello Mozzers, I was looking at my homepage and subsequent category landing pages on my on my eCommerce site and wondered whether I have to many internal links which could in effect be diluting link juice to much of the pages I need it to flow. My homepage has 266 links of which 114 (43%) are duplicate links which seems a bit to much to me. One of my major competitors who is a national company has just launched a new site design and they are only showing popular categories on their home page although all categories are accessible from the menu navigation. They only have 123 links on their home page. I am wondering whether If I was to not show every category on my homepage as some of them we don't really have any sales from and only concerntrate on popular ones there like my competitors , then the link juice flowing downwards in the site would be concerntated as I would have less links for them to flow ?... Is that basically how it works ? Is there any negatives with regards to duplicate links on either home or category landing page. We are showing both the categories as visual boxes to select and they are also as selectable links on the left of a page ? Just wondered how duplicate links would be treated? Any thoughts greatly appreciated thanks Pete

What is a good, structured link building campaign?
I feel like I've tried everything up to this point. I also survived all of the recent Google updates, including the recent EMD update (my site is an EMD). Also I am in the financial sector. I blog every day, I've made some great infographics. I have a very nice website (much better than the competition's), I've done my on-page SEO. I've done the basic link building too. I've hit good business directories, good blog directories (like Technorati), and infographic directories. I've done a bit of comment linkbuilding but I don't see that being very fruitful. I also have a large twitter following + a twitter tribe that shares all of my blog posts. I can't say I've managed to build any sort of community however. My traffic has grown from 0 to anywhere from 80 to 160 visitors every day in just 3 months, and I am happy with that progress but it seems like I have plateaued. Sure I will continue creating content, but what can I do about link building? That's where the results are probably going to come from. I've read all the articles about it, took advice from LinkBuildingSchool.com... but at this point, I'm not sure how to continue. I dont want to continue going after blog comment links, I want quality. Any advice?

What is the best way to hide duplicate, image embedded links from search engines?
**Hello! Hoping to get the community’s advice on a technical SEO challenge we are currently facing. [My apologies in advance for the long-ish post. I tried my best to condense the issue, but it is complicated and I wanted to make sure I also provided enough detail.] Context: I manage a human anatomy educational website that helps students learn about the various parts of the human body. We have been around for a while now, and recently launched a completely new version of our site using 3D CAD images. While we tried our best to design our new site with SEO best practices in mind, our daily visitors dropped by ~15%, despite drastic improvements we saw in our user interaction metrics, soon after we flipped the switch. SEOMoz’s Website Crawler helped us uncover that we now may have too many links on our pages and that this could be at least part of the reason behind the lower traffic. i.e. we are not making optimal use of links and are potentially ‘leaking’ link juice now. Since students learn about human anatomy in different ways, most of our anatomy pages contain two sets of links: Clickable links embedded via JavaScript in our images. This allows users to explore parts of the body by clicking on whatever objects interests them. For example, if you are viewing a page on muscles of the arm and hand and you want to zoom in on the biceps, you can click on the biceps and go to our detailed biceps page. Anatomy Terms lists (to the left of the image) that list all the different parts of the body on the image. This is for users who might not know where on the arms the biceps actually are. But this user could then simply click on the term “Biceps” and get to our biceps page that way. Since many sections of the body have hundreds of smaller parts, this means many of our pages have 150 links or more each. And to make matters worse, in most cases, the links in the images and in the terms lists go to the exact same page. My Question: Is there any way we could hide one set of links (preferably the anchor text-less image based links) from search engines, such that only one set of links would be visible? I have read conflicting accounts of different methods from using JavaScript to embedding links into HTML5 tags. And we definitely do not want to do anything that could be considered black hat. Thanks in advance for your thoughts! Eric**
