Duplicate Content
-
I'm currently working on a site that sells appliances. Currently, there are thousands of "issues" with this site, many of them dealing with duplicate content. Now, the product pages can be viewed in "List" or "Grid" format. As Lists, they have very little in the way of content.
My understanding is that the duplicate content arises from different URLs going to the same site. For instance, the site might have a different URL when told to display 9 items than when told to display 15. This could then be solved by inserting rel = canonical.
Is there a way to take a site and get a list of all possible duplicates? This would be much easier than slogging through every iteration of the options and copying down the URLs. Also, is there anything I might be missing in terms of why there is duplicate content? Thank you.

Essentially, you need to figure out the primary causes of duplicate content and then pick a way to handle it. A great spot to find your duplicate content is in Google Webmaster Tools under the HTML Improvements section. Look at the section titled "Duplicate Title Tags" and this will show you a spot where you very well may have duplicate content.
The primary ways to take care of it will be:
- NoIndexing
- Canonicalizing
- Parameter Handling in Google Webmaster Tools
Choosing which technique you use will likely be a result of what you are technically able to implement, based on each unique challenge from the different causes of duplicate content. You likely won't be able to kill all of the duplicate content at once. I suggest handling it in chunks. For example, first tackle the Items Shown problem you reference in your question. As you mentioned, you could canonicalize it. Basically, whenever the URL reflects your Item Parameter, you could canonicalize it back to the representative URL.
ie: yoursite.com/category-results&items=15 --> would canonicalize to yoursite.com/category-results
Once you have the Number of Item pages out of the index, focus on the next biggest cause of duplicate content.

Have you created a Moz campaign for the site? As Mozbot crawls your site and tells you about all the duplicate content issues that you may have.
To solve that, instead of checking of changing code all over the place, make the changes on those pages that you already know have duplicate content issues (like in the example you gave) and then let Mozbot re-crawl the site so you can see which pages still have issues to solve them.
The rel canonical should point to the one page that has the most info (as you said list has less, grid will be better for the canonical).
If your site uses several categories and subcategories, you should also have a look at the noindex tag, as sometimes that creates duplicate content issues too (subcategory products listed in the root category). The same applies to any kind of listings, such as search results (which should be noindexed).
Hope this helps!

Ecommerce product page duplicate content
Hi, I know this topic has been covered in the past but I haven't been able to find the answers to this specific thing. So let's say on a website, all the product pages contain partial duplicate content - i.e. this could be delivery options or returning policy etc. Would this be classed as duplicate content? Or is this something that you would not get concerned about if it's let's say 5-10% of the content on the page? Or if you think this is something you'd take into consideration, how would you fix it? Thank you!

Content in Tabs
I speed read an article recently and forgot to save it regarding Contents on a page in tabs. Is it correct that now Google is rendering the entire page it's better not to have content in tabs hidden by Javascript? As it stands at the moment, we've got the tabs set-up so that the main part of the page containing the keyword rich text is in a tab and not the first thing presented to the user

Duplicate Content when Using "visibility classes" in responsive design layouts? - a SEO-Problem?
I have text in the right column of my responsive layout which will show up below the the principal content on small devices. To do this I use visibility classes for DIVs. So I have a DIV with with a unique style text that is visible only on large screen sizes. I copied the same text into another div which shows only up only on small devices while the other div will be hidden in this moment. Technically I have the same text twice on my page. So this might be duplicate content detected as SPAM? I'm concerned because hidden text on page via expand-collapsable textblocks will be read by bots and in my case they will detect it twice?Does anybody have experiences on this issue?bestHolger

Creating a product per size causing duplicate content problems?
I have an e-commerce site and in order to receive a listing for each size and color in Google Merchant, I've created a new product for each size and color. The problem is that since I did this, the canonical tags aren't correct and there isn't a way to change them manually with the platform I'm on. I feel like this is one of the main reasons I've been dropping in the rankings. Should I delete all duplicate products? The system will take care of canonical tags automatically when creating a new size/color within the system (how it's supposed to be created) but the canonical tags become messy when I duplicate a product and edit the size/color to create a "whole new product". Here is an example of what I'm referring to: http://www.carbonconnection.com/search.php?search_query=nalini+rigel&x=0&y=0 (this problem actually isn't mine, it's a friend's but for the sake of simplicity and gaining a second opinion to be sure before he redoes all of his products, I'm asking as though it were my issue)

How to fix duplicate page content and page titles?
Apologies in advance if this has already been answered (it probably has) - I'm just not seeing it. Is there a guide on here for how to fix the issues brought up by the crawler - specifically, things like duplicate page content, or duplicate page titles? A lot of these seem to have been created by wordpress.org combos that I didn't anticipate - i.e., category pages, author pages, etc. The crawler brings up the problems, but I don' t know where to start to go about fixing them. Also, any guide on best SEO practices or fixing optimization problems, specifically for wordpress.org blogs, would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
