Link Building
-
I have to develop a strategy for link building.
The SEO guy I have been speaking with has started putting links on .edu sites etc .
To me - this "stinks" of manipulating the search engines - which I know we will get stung by at some point.
I hope this isn't standard practice - but I don't know what the best way to improve rankings in terms of links etc.
We sell health products and are starting to put out 3-4 high quality articles per week.
Ideas?
Kind Regards
Martin

Thanks @Chris, Sounds totally agreed, one has to know first all about their products/services, employees, audience, market, prices, and competition etc.

Marty,
The quest for better organic search marketing today a quest for knowing who and what you are as a company better than your competitors know who and what they are. The depth of your knowledge about your products/services, employees, audience, market, prices, and competition all distinguish you from your competition. A link building strategy takes some facet of those things and packages them into content of some sort--and it takes a networking effort so that others recognize your depth of knowledge.
I mention that because it kind of gives you an understanding of what it is, exactly, that you're tossing on your SEO vendor's plate. A link building strategy is an extension of a business plan and is not something to be taken lightly.
I know plenty of people out there can say "that's all hogwash, just give me some links on a PR 5 site and get on with it." So be it. Competitor like that come and go. If you're in it for the long-haul, start really studying what your audience needs that is not yet being satisfied, then study available channels you can use to tell them how you are the one to satisfy those needs. After you've been immersed in those two things, the content you can use to tell them your story will come to mind. Your "link building" strategy will be the combination of those three things.

Hi,
Link Building is now all about industry related : It's not having as many links as you can, but as having health related websites talking about your articles.
Use MOZ tools in order to find those links
Best,
Benoit.

Hi Martin,
That doesn't sound to good indeed. I'm still fairly new to Link building myself, but I'm pretty sure that it's not about getting as many (crappy) links as possible by getting your link up on .edu sites. Also I believe that link building is less and less about having your link on other people's website, and more about social media.
I checked out this mozinar recently and thought it had some good ideas about link building now being more about endorsements: http://moz.com/webinars/winning-the-future-of-search-and-seo Maybe it'll help you with your strategy.

PR links
Its seems that at lot of or competitors are using PR site to place articles with links. They are using the same article across many sites with the same anchor text link - But they seem to be doing very well in the rankings.... I have steered away from this type of linking as I assumed Google wouldn't be keen on this type of activity but I seem to be wrong.... Any views on this?

Link Building Question
Hey Moz'ers, I have created several blogs on different domains for the purpose of writing good content articles that contain 2-3 links per article that go back to my website. It has been up for about 3-4 weeks. I am not seeing my results/links showing up in OSE, is this because it still needs more time or is there something else I could be advised to look into? In theory these blogs will only contain 2-3 links from each domain to the site. I was also going to make sure the anchor text per link is different (keyword, brand name, random anchor like click here). Side note: How does this system sound as part of one small aspect to link building? red flags? Thanks for all the responses and advice.

What to talk about when building relationships
Hello, I'm assessing what to do to build relationships in my client's niche. For each possible backlink provider, I'm thinking 1. Like them on facebook 2. Follow them on Twitter 3. Add them on G+ 4. Read their recent blog posts. 5. Comment in their facebook account about what I liked about their latest blog posts and tweet (though I don't know what to tweet here) 6. Post helpful blog post comments 7. Get the conversation going, then talk to them introduce my content to them that will help them. (though I don't know how to make the transition) I'm marketing a PDF that is helpful for their site and an HTML article (same content as the PDF) that has been non-commercialized. This is for an ecommerce business. My biggest void is not knowing how to lead a good relationship conversation into a conversion. I don't want to be salesy. But I'm looking for general comments as well, like what to tweet and anything I've left out in the list.

Advice on forum links
Hi guys, Looking for some good advice on forum links and there potential negative impact. I am analysing the links of a URL and around 60% of the links are coming from a forum (on a different domain). The forum is very relevant - about the same product he is selling and also has a decent user base. This 60% of links account for roughly 6,500 links. All with different varying keyword anchor text's, and some with excessive usage of a particular keyword anchor text. They are also all do-follow. They are in a mixture of signature links and in post links. The site they link to has been hit by penguin which also has an EMD. MY question is even though these links are relevant and on a good site with good traffic, do you think they have likely been picked up in the penguin algorithm? My initial thought was yes only because they are all do follow and mostly keyword based. But id love to hear thoughts on this as well as possible recovery options, i.e should he remove the forum links, reduce drastically or make them all no follow so traffic can still pass through? Thanks!

How do I get the best from our Blog and build quality links and drive traffic to our site?
We have recently setup a Wordpress focused blog (blog.towelsrus.co.uk) which is very much work in progress. Because of financial constraints we had to host this on a separate sub domain. I need to get to grips with blogs is new to me (only been doing SEO this for 3 months now) and have have read may posts on the forums here that this is one of the best ways to build links and engage the audience. How do I go about getting people to read my blog, and should I use this to pull in traffic on keywords we cannot through the main site or should i use this to re-enforce and build traction on those keywords we are trying to rank for on the main site?

Planning a Link Building Campaign: Which keywords to focus on?
Okay, so looking at my ranking tab for my campaign. It shows the increase in traffic from my keywords, ranks, etc. My goal is to increase traffic, thereby sales. I am trying to plan a link building campaign (aside from the onpage optimization) and get as many keywords within the top 10 as possible: Do I start focusing on a certain number of keywords that are on page 2 (lets say 10) and try to build links to get them within the top 10. Then pick another 10 keywords? Do I pick a variety of keywords from various pages? What is the smartest way of trying to optimize campaign keywords as far as linkbuilding?
