Fast hosting
-
Hi everyone,
The host I use is OK, but looking for something lightning fast for a new project. Any know which hosts are the fastest and best for SEO?
-
I agree with the comments already presented. Many slow sites are that way because of how they are implemented. There are many free tools to help. Two tools that I use regularly when developing a site are YSlow and Firebug. Both are Firefox plug-ins that provide a great deal of information on the performance of a site.

If you are looking for lightning fast response but do not want to pay high prices, then an option may be some of the VMware clusters or Cloud severs that scale up and deal with high traffic times. If you have bursts of traffic during certain periods of the day or month, such as specials etc, the you pay more for resources during those periods and less when your server is idle. These can be a good solution for medium to large business requirements without paying for clustered dedicated servers. If you do a search of 'cloud hosting' you can find a range on offer.
Speed can also depend of the type of content you are serving. If you intend to stream video on demand or similar services then you would need to ensure you host has the appropriate CDN facilities to meet your needs. If high data requirements then make sure the data centre can deal with that level of traffic without blocking issues.
If your need content delivered fast to various international destinations ensure the host has clusters in the datafeed areas for the countries your are targeting. e.g. To target Australia you do not want a datacentre in the US as that route is clogged so you would need Asia-Pacific centers etc.

Most hosts can be lightning fast.
Slow hosting often occurs when the hosting company loads a large number of websites onto a single server. That makes the websites compete for resources on an overloaded machine. One cure is to get a dedicated server where you will have complete control over the amount of activity occurs on it. That can be expensive.
There are also some situations of slow hosting when your host is in a different part of the world from your website's visitors - that is bad for SEO since the location of the host is sometimes used to determine your search engine rankings. There are also still a few hosting services that are not genuine hosting companies, instead it is a guy running a server on a machine in his basement with a slow connection to the internet.
The problem might not be with the host. it is possible that you have inefficient programming, huge images, bad code or other problems that interfere with the processing of your website on the server or the rendering of the website in a visitor's browser.

Need Third Party Input. Our Web host blocked all bots including Google and myself because they believe SEO is slowing down their server.
I would like some third party input... partly for my sanity and also for my client. I have a client who runs a large online bookstore. The bookstore runs in Magento and the developers are also apparently the web host. (They actually run the servers.. I do not know if they are sitting under someones desk or are actually in a data center) Their server has been slowed down by local and foreign bots. They are under the impression my SEO services are sending spammer bots to crawl and slow down their site. To fix the problem they disallowed all bots. Everything, Google, Yahoo, Bing. They also banned my access from the site. My clients organic traffic instantly took a HUGE hit. (almost 50% of their traffic is organic and over 50% is Organic + Adwords most everything from Google) Their keyword rankings are taking a quick dive as well. Could someone please verify the following as true to help me illustrate to my client that this is completely unacceptable behavior on part of the host. I believe: 1.) You should never disavow ALL robots from your site as a solution for spam. As a matter of fact most of the bad bots ignore robots.txt anyways. It is a way to limit where Google searches (which is obviously a technique to be used) 2.) On site SEO work as well as link building, etc. is not responsible for foreign bots and scrappers putting a heavy load on the server. 3.) Their behavior will ultimately lead to a massive loss of rankings (already happening) and a huge loss of traffic (already happening) and ultimately since almost half the traffic is organic the client could expect to lose a large sum of revenue from purchases made by organic traffic since it will disappear. Please give your input and thoughts. I really appreciate it!

To avoid errors in our Moz crawl, we removed subdomains from our host. (First we tried 301 redirects, also listed as errors.) Now we have backlinks all over the web that are broken. How bad is this, from a pagerank standpoint?
Our MOZ crawl kept telling us we had duplicate page content even though our subdomains were redirected to our main site. (Pages from Wineracks.vigilantinc.com were 301 redirected to vigilantinc.com/wineracks.) Now, to solve that problem, we have removed the wineracks.vigilantinc.com subdomain. The error report is better, but now we have broken backlinks - thousands of them. Is this hurting us worse than the duplicate content problem?

Risk of hosting website on internal application server
This isn't really related to SEO, but it came up with a client.... We have a client that is hosting their website internally. That's not a problem except that the server it is hosted on is the same server where they host many secure applications with sensitive customer information. We recommended to the marketing vp to move the website to a different server that doesn't host secure apps so we don't have be concerned about any conflicts. Their IT folks pushed back. So, I'm looking for some ammunition to support our recommendation. Any ideas? Thanks. Bernie Borges Find and Convert bernie@findandconvert.com

Best way to host new product?
Hi guys We are launching a new product, the web pages are being built by a 3rd party and fall outside our current CMS. We're considering either hosting it on 1) sub domain 2) folder within existing site (although will be tricky to implement) or 3) a different URL altogether. What would you say is the best for SEO? Many thanks in advance.... Nigel

Cloud Hosting + CDN worth it?
Hi, Never used cloud hosting before. Found a service for $60-70 a month, just want to give it a try on a new website. They also have an additional CDN feature for additional $40 a month. It promises great results as well as google's love. Does cloud hosting+cdn worth it's money? Website will have around 500 visitors a day, but all will be ppc, so there is no need for a server. but reliability is a great issue Thanks, Serge

Two domains One hosting account
I have two separate domains set up on one hosting account through godaddy. Will this affect the SEO negatively? They are completely different sites with their own unique domains but on my local files the second domain is set up as a subfolder for the original hosted domain. Any thoughts? Thanks in advance.

To host within my city or not?
I'm opening up a web development company in Vancouver and I'm stuck between getting hosting in Montreal or Vancouver. Montreal is a cheaper but, my company is in Vancouver. I have a .ca which will be my domain name, so I'm already on top of that aspect. From what I understand it would help for SEO purposes if my IP is a local Vancouver IP for my company website. So my question is... Should I go for the Vancouver hosting and pay more or stick with the Montreal hosting.
