Should we pay for this attorney directory?
-
I'm aware of how most directories don't matter and/or have lost significance over the past few years, but in the legal world, it sure seems like this one does: http://www.martindale.com/ I doubt we will ever get many cases from this directory, but it would be a nice link to have...I think. The DA is 88 and the page we would be listed in is a 39. Almost all of our competitors who outrank us have this link as well. Granted, it's not the only link, but it's one I could afford to obtain. Any thoughts or experiences?
***If any of you market for attorneys, and you're outside the Tampa area (don't want to cause any professional conflicts) have you recommended this directory to your clients?
Thanks,
Ruben

That's a good point. It's a residual, so the first year may not be horrific. However, if I compile over 5 years, I could definitely see where we could better target our efforts.
Thanks for the insights and the clarification!

I'm sorry if I didn't clarify - what I meant was that the money put toward that directory, be it a one-time payment or a residual, would almost always be better spent toward other marketing or SEO efforts. If this doesn't greatly effect your budget, then it's worth considering (especially if OSE say's it's a quality link).
Most of my customers are SMBs, so I tend to counsel against paid listings/directories - but I didn't take into consideration that you might not have a similar budget.
Let's append my answer to: if you have the money to test the value of this, then do it.

I appreciate your response, but I just can't seem to wrap my head around the first point. While l agree with the idea that if I can pay for it so can anyone else, and therefore it wouldn't help me against anyone who already has that link. However, my problem is that if the link passes value, (and according to OSE it is a quality link) and I don't have it, so doesn't that mean it's hurting me vis-a-vis my competition?

From experience with clients of my own (for which we develop websites and counsel), I can say that paying for a spot on a blanket directory is usually not worth it. The ideology behind that is twofold.
- If you can pay for it, so can anyone else. That makes the intended value moot.
- It's a common misconception that all directories benefit SEO or presence. Some actually hurt SEO. I don't know if the one you've mentioned would help or hinder, but the first point still stands.
I suggest that if you join directories, you handle that process by either asking clients (past or current) how they found you, or by researching which directories - if any - tend to bring traffic to groups similar to yours.
As an aside, I'm always suspicious/wary of any website that's poorly designed, and martindale.com is no exception.
Good luck, and I hope this has been helpful for you!

The other and more important way to look at this is would a user find the directory helpful? if yes then its worth it. the other factors are a bonus ontop of the user flow.

Are directory websites still worth considering?
Hi Mozzers, What are people's opinions on directory website? As standard, we would always attempt to get our clients listed on reputable generic directories such as Google My Business and Yelp, and then directories that are relevant to the industry in which a company operates. Do you think this is the right approach to take?

Paid Directory Links
To my surprise, I couldn't find a clear answer to the questions "Do paid directory links violate Google guidelines?" I know Matt Cutt's recently had a video on paid links, but it didn't really cover paid directory links. Are well-curated directory sites that charge for inclusion violate Google's guidelines? A good example would be the business.com directory.

Adding a directory and aggregated content to my ecommerce site
I'd like to add a directory of websites to my ecommerce site. We operate within a nice niche both in terms of products and demographics. The directory would be specific to our verifical and market. My concern is how Google will see these external links. A reciprocal link won't be required to be in our directory, but I suspect many sites would like back to us as we outreach to them with content ideas, their directory links, and as we share them with our social network on twitter and facebook. The directory would be broken down into categories so each page may have 1-20 external links on it. Our architecture already incldes category links (all internal) so these would be in additional the links you would normally see on our site. I'd also like to aggregate some content - again, mostly external links. Will Google have take poorly to that aggregation?

Directory submission after Google panda update
I am very much concerned about directory submission after Google panda update. I have few questions in this regard 1- Should I submit the home page URL or deep links in directories? What is better practice? 2- Can I submit more than one link in one directory? What are the consequences of submitting both (home page and deep link) in same directory? 3- Should I start directory submission aggressively or I need to take care about the quantity? Regards

Another Yahoo directory question
Hi all Is there any way of seeing if the Yahoo directory is likely to be beneficial for my site? I can see that about 9 of my competitors are in there, and the category that they are listed in has been indexed by google. What other factors could help me choose whether to submit my site? Thanks,

What is the purpose of submitting your blog articles to directories?
I was wondering what the purpose of submitting your blog articles to directories are. Doesn't it require enough "points" or "+1's" for it to become a "do-follow" link? People on the forum talk about automating directory submission, can anyone recommend a good software for this? I've been hearing that Google Penalizes you for article submission because it looks like spam?

How can influence a directory backling page on your website ?
Hi, Some good directories asked a backlink for having ours listed in their categories. But of course, I am not fan of putting their link on the home page, but creating a page exclusively for these backlinks is a bad thing to mister google ? thanks in advance !
