This is probably going to sound like the silliest question ever, but I have to ask. Does an article that requires a subscription to read count as a backlink? Is there any difference in that type of backlink as opposed to one that doesn't require a subscription?

Hi seosarah,

Not a silly question at all! The issue with links from articles that require subscriptions is discoverability- that is, Google and the other engines cannot credit you for the link if they cannot find the article in the first place. So that would be the primary difference in getting links in articles that are only accessible via subscription versus articles that do not.

Backlink Dilemma & Typewriters (Seriously...Typewriters)

Hi all. I have a bit of a unique issue. My company, Smith Corona **used **to be one of the world's premier typewriter manufacturers. However, we have completely got out of that business roughly a decade ago. Instead, we sell blank thermal shipping labels. As you might imagine, writing content and getting links about paper labels is not easy. Quite simply, no one cares about labels. They either stick or they don't. Typewriters is a whole different story. We still get tons of calls and emails everyday about them. There are online communities dedicated to them. I think if I even tried a little, I could get backlinks from people interested in typewriters. The problem is... that we don't do ANYTHING with them at all anymore. I would really just be pimping out our brand name in hopes of getting some cheap links. The real question is... do I even want these links? If they are semantically about typewriters and not labels, is it really helping my SEO efforts? Any advice is welcome. Thanks all!

Spammy no follow backlinks - what should I do?

There is a individual/company that is creating lots of spam sites in my niche. It doesn't seem that they are trying to rank for any keywords, so I'm a little confused as to their purpose, but here's what they're doing. They scrape the top 10 Google results for each keyword and create a page - so if the niche is "widgets", they scrape the top 10 ranked sites for 'widgets', 'blue widgets', 'red widgets', and so on. A 'results' page is created for each keyword, which is linked from a home page. The results page always contains 10 websites - text is the site metadescription or similar. Each website gets a nofollow link back with the page title used as the anchor text. The host sites all have the keyword in the domain name - e.g www.widgetsxyz.com. The sites are thrown together but interestingly have a very crappy but individual logo (like 90's clipart). The host sites all have high DA/PA due to some very extensive link spam pointing to the sites, with very targeted keywords. There is seemingly no purpose to these sites that I can see - no other 'followed' links on the page or site. Whoever is doing this is churning out tens, if not hundreds of these sites. Any ideas what might be going on here, and whether I should be disavowing these sites (even though no follow). The fear is that they could switch the links to do follow, and get all the major players penalised in one fell swoop. ???

Backlink Report Totals Discrepancy

I have been having a tough time getting my customer backlinks developed. However; I noticed when I run a backlink report for http://www.mycustomer.com, www.mycustomer.com and customer.com that I get three different backlink totals. Is there any way to forward to of the above URL's to one or am I doing something wrong when I am developing the backlinks?

Does posting on blogs with anchored backlinks do you any good?

My current strategy: I am ranking for keyword and site: Immigration Consultant I access the Fresh Web Explorer and search my keyword, then find the blogposts with High Authority where I can post using HTML and include my link in my signature, or sometimes the post has a link associated with the username. Now my question is this, does this count? will google even crawl the comments? can I aid the crawling process somehow? Any advice on creating relavent back-links is much appreciated. Thank you

How long for backlinks to kick in?

Lets say you do a guest post, Google indexes the article which must mean it has found the link back. Would you expect to see movement straight away? Some of my latest guest posts (in the last week) have been indexed but have shown no movement at all, but when I check WMT for links coming in they are not in the list so im guessing they have not taken full effect?

Backlinks: What are they really and how can I create them.

I am relatively new to the SEO world, and I want to build backlinks linking to our main site. My preferred way to create backlinks is by adding them in my blog comments or forum responses. I am an active participant in a large number of blogs/forums related to our field and I would like to add relevant backlinks in the comments/answers I post. I originally thought that a backlink was just a link, but none of the links that I have added to blogs like that have been recognized as backlinks. https://www.dynaread.com/ Why is this so? I know now that good backlink would be something like: Dynaread is a science based dyslexia remediation program for older struggling readers. However I have no idea how to add this types of links to blog comments or forum pages where there is no link tool. Do I have to do something with HTML? Please explain briefly what a backlink really is and most importantly how I can create them. Thank you in advance for your help! Are there any SEO benefits drawn from creating backlinks with Google url shortener service(especially for the very deep links) or for the do-follow link juice I have to use a complete address?
