Bounce Rate Manipulated with Direct Traffic Spikes - Thoughts?
-
Hi Mozzers, we're hoping to get some insight from some of the technical folks out there on what seems to be malicious targeting of a client's website.
We recently discovered enormous spikes in direct traffic to the website with 90% originating from the USA and the rest coming from dozens of other countries. Nearly 100% of visits are new sessions and each only lasts a few seconds - thereby driving the bounce rate over 95%!
There are other possible identifiers worth noting, including:
- Browser - 99% use Internet Explorer
- Browser Version - 89% use IE 7.0
- Flash Version - 80% use 14.0 r0
- Operating System - 99% use Windows
See the attached "Screenshot - Traffic Spikes & Inflated Bounce Rate".
Whether this is a negative SEO attack or something else, we're really hoping to get the community's input and (hopefully) possible solutions.
Thanks!

Keri,
Happy belated Thanksgiving!
It's been about 3.5 months, so just wanted to give a quick update on this in case anyone else is still having this issue.
Unfortunately, we haven't really seen a solution to this but have improved our situation.
During the period of September 10-17, we contacted Perfect Audience to see if they were experiencing the same security issues as AdRoll. They confirmed that they too had seen some customers affected by this invalid traffic and so their engineers worked on modifying their tag to "no longer track IE7 traffic" and "blacklist all domains" that the traffic was coming from."
Unfortunately, this had no positive effect on our client's traffic issues.
Half-way through October, we saw invalid traffic spike once again into the thousands and stay there until around mid-November.
Half-way through November, the client migrated to a secure site (HTTPs), which actually made a notable difference in the invalid traffic, causing it to reduce down to, what we might consider, normalized numbers.
Although this seemed to help, unfortunately it still didn't completely address the problem. Today, we're still seeing IE7 as the top browser with 95% bounce rate.
At this point, we're just left to run filters to exclude the IE7 traffic until this essentially resolves itself (crossing fingers).

You're welcome. From the comments and the second post, it looks like this is being addressed by the ad providers, yet people are seeing another spike again in traffic in the past few days. Do take comfort that you're not alone and not being singled out!

Keri,
Thank you for the response and pointing me in the right direction. It seems the fingers are being pointed at AdRoll as it was having websites in its ad exchange network drive invalid traffic to its advertisers' websites.
The thing is ... the client is not even an AdRoll advertiser nor do they have AdRoll's script implemented in the code. However, they did use Perfect Audience in the past and still have that script on the site.
I'll test removing the script and see what that does. In the meantime, I'll reach out to Perfect Audience to see if this is something they're also dealing with.
Thanks again Keri!

I'm about to run out the door, but take a quick look at this thread and the update he links to. There's a known issue out there with IE7 direct visits being really funky right now.

Canonical tags being direct to "page=all" pages for an Ecommerce website
I find it alarming that my client has canonical tags pointing to "page=all" product gallery pages. Some of these product gallery pages have over 100 products and I think this could effect load time, especially for mobile. I would like to get some insight from the community on this, thanks!

We lost 60-70% of our organic traffic but no penalty - what happened?
Hi Mozzers! Need some help/advice I’m running a sports betting site – superbetting.com and around 16-19th may our organic traffic suddenly dropped with 60-70% or so and ever since we’ve been struggling trying to find the cause and not least, been trying to do something about. A few observations / thoughts; It seems we’ve suddenly have quite a few inbound links from Russia without promoting our content / site towards Russian users. Neither do we have any Russian content. Should we disavow those links and/or try to contact the sites to get our link removed? Looking in ahrefs, I can see that anchors also suddenly are dominated by Russian. Maybe obvious given the above but still strange … We have struggled with spammers trying to deploy link in our forum and have just recently removed them ( or at least we think we have) but could those bad links been hurting us over time? Google ran an algo update in may regarding “quality signals” and I full aware that our site may not be top-notch but I can’t belief that should have hit us that hard since I (and I may be biased :)) would say that there are far lousier sites ranking better than us now than before. Any feedback would be appreciated Thanks! Mike

Why is this site performing so well in the SERP's and getting high traffic volume for no apparent reason!
The site is https://virtualaccountant.ie/ It's a really small site They have only about 7 back links, They don't blog They don't have a PPC campaign They don't stand out from the crowd in terms of product or services offered So why are they succeeding in topping the SERP's for difficult to rank for accounting keywords such as accountant and online accounts. What are they doing better than everyone else, or have they discovered a way to cheat Google, and worse still - ME!

My Site having a drop in traffic with eash passing month
Hi, I'm running a text message site mixsms.com from 2009. It was performing good till Oct 2012. In the end of Nov 2012 I noticed a drop in traffic and then with each passing month I'm getting 1500-2000 unique visitors drop. In Oct 2012 my daily unique visitors were 15000+ each day and now it is just having 2000 after Feb end. I've done several things to improve my site. I changes the template, removed all unnecessary html elements, changed seo structure (optimize with all modern seo techniques). Stop backlinking from Nov 2012 but instead of getting improvements I'm continuously having a drop in traffic. I'll highly appreciate your time if you look into site deeply to findout exact issues that are causing for this drop. I'm even ready to hire any seo consultant if he is pretty sure to get 100% results. Thanks in advance for your support

Thinking of redirecting *all* mobile traffic to another site (via an advertiser) - safe to do?
Hi, I am thinking of redirecting all mobile (iphone, cell phone, etc) to an advertiser (so completely different content than my site). Is there any risk of getting banned from google (etc) for doing this? (this is for an adult site)
