Domain change recommendations
-
We recently migrated one of our websites to a new domain. Obviously we were expecting a decrease in traffic initially, but it has actually gone down by 70% week-over-week since we made the switch.
We set up a 301 redirect from the old domain to the new domain, changed all internal links to the new domain and changed all inbound links that we owned to the new domain.
Our research suggested the best way to approach a domain change was by keeping it simple and not making too many changes at once. So my questions are:
1. Are these the kinds of results we should expect initially after a domain change? And if not,
2. What are the steps we should take from here?
Thanks!

Thanks William, and yes we did redirects at the page level.
It looks like we didn't have the correct analytics code in a few different templates so that might have been the cause of some of the drop. It's also been just over a week since we made the switch so we're probably still in that window were the drop should be expected.

Make sure the 301s you put in place are functioning properly. Did you 301 all pages from the old site to the new one? Did you redirect them at a page-level or just grab all the old URLs and redirect them all to the new root domain?
Also, look at analytics and GMT for the old and the new domain. Do the increases on the new domain correspond with the drops from the old domain? Maybe there some spots on the old domain that are still there and need to be redirected? The data in these spots should help you determine if something is out of whack.
How long ago was the domain change? This kind of drop can be expected for a couple weeks, but too much longer than that, and something else may be wrong.

Have you done change of address in Webmaster Tools? You need access to both the new and the old domain to do it, but it's very simple. I did a similar thing (switch domains) in April and did the change of address and didn't lose traffic. Maybe this is why?
Also, make sure your new pages have canonicals just in case you forgot a 301.
Talking of 301s - I assume you did page to page, not simply domain to domain? It's a boring job mapping the old to new urls, but worth it.
Good luck,
Amelia
PS - there was a moz video about this which I watched before doing my domain transfer, I can't find it today but maybe someone at Moz will be able to point you in the right direction?

Redirecting old domain to new domain with wordpress
Hi all, I need to change domain name to a website published on wordpress. I'd think to make these steps: trasferring the website (files+db) to a new hosting space to redirect old site (www.oldsite.com) to the new one (www.newsite.com) using rewrite rules. With these steps I'd need to transfer and reinstall files and wordpress so I would like to discover if there's some less time expending procedure to consider. Thanks and ciao Bob

Should we 301 redirect our old domain to the new domain
We have a product that when started was under the domain appnowgo.com. We've since changed the name and the domain is now knackhq.com. The latter domain doesn't rank nearly as well as the former for many of the keywords we are targeting. For example... "online database builder" and "web app builder" are two of those keywords. Obviously having app in the domain is not a bad thing but it is our old name. The question is, should we 301 the appnowgo.com domain to knackhq.com? Or should we use that better rank and just link users to knackhq.com from the appnowgo.com site until we can increase our ranking for knackhq.com? We don't plan to update the content on appnowgo.com anymore and we obviously don't want to drop off rank if at all possible. Thanks! Eric

Keyword in Domain or not?
My on page optimization grade is an "A" with the following factors; Factor Overview

Critical Factors

4 / 4

High Importance Factors

7 / 7

Moderate Importance Factors

8 / 9

Low Importance Factors

11 / 11

Optional Factors

5 / 5

The main thing I appear to be missing is keywords in my URL. How truly important is that in today's SEO world and how much time or ranking would be lost if I do not have control to change the external links to my website if I decided to migrate to a keyword relevant url?

Subfolder to Root Domain, Should i or not?
Dear All, I am kinda of stuck and need your helps, I have major client's site which is located in subdirectory. Instance: http://www.majorclient.com.cn/cn/ and as you can see domain name is already localized and they are not planning to make any english version of the site, So there will be no /eng/ folder but clients whole website is /cn/ subdirectory which is totally unnecessary and i would like to 301 whole site to **http://www.majorclient.com.cn ** But the problem is that this site has been /cn/ folder forever since the beginning and lot of trusted links are pointing to www.majorclient.com.cn/cn/ So should i move it or just configure 301 www.majorclient.com.cn to www.majorclient.com.cn/cn/ leave it there and don't bother. Help?
