DUPLICATE PAGE TITLE ISSUE
-
Hi
We have 25 pages with a download form on it. People arrive at the page through a ink with optimised anchor text which sits on the information pages.
As there is no information on these pages we do not need them to be optimised so the developer has given all the download pages exactly the same page title.
Although the pages in themselves are not significant would this effect the way Google viewed the whole site, and would it pay to make each one unique or doesn't it really matter.
Alternatively, is there a better way to handle this? and if so would that ligate the benefit of the anchor text.
Thanks

Hi Dan
Thank you - that is the final piece of information I needed to get so I could have an overall feel as to the way I should look at this. in a holistic way.
Best wishes

Hi
First check to see if the pages are indexed in Google by doing site:www.mydomain.com as a search. If they are not, you have nothing to worry about (as long as you block them in robots.txt soon) Your developer should be able to edit your robots.txt file extremely easily. Its just a file that sits in the root directory of the website.
If the 25 pages are indexed though, it could have a negative impact to have 25 duplicate title tags. As to how much impact, that may depend on how large the site is, how deep into the site they are, etc.

Hi EGOL
Thank you for your reply - very good suggestions, especially for some other products - however, this one is about a certain element of manufacturing - so sexy titles don't quite work in this market (and my client may have a fit).
Having said all that, we have had a better response than we expected and it does create great leads.
I will speak with the developer to see what can be done though.
Thanks again

Hi Byrce
Thank you for your helpful reply - there are different products and this allows for tracking and ultimately collating the product against the applicants details whch are then forwarded to the sales guys.

HI Dan
Thank you for your reply - I may end up going down your route as the subject matter is manufacturing issues - so not rivetting facebook content, that's for sure.It is amazing how three different answers all contribute another perspective - all helpful as well.
My other challenge is battling with the developer!!
I would love an answer to the query tucked in the middle of my question - does having 25 identical page titles effect the way Google view the whole site?
Many thanks again

Do you mean to say that you do not want these pages indexed at all? You say "there is no information on these pages and they do not need to be optimized". If in fact, you don't want them indexed, you would add them to your robots.txt file as such:
Disallow: /filename.html
Disallow: /folder/filname.html
etc.
However, what EGOL and Bryce have suggested would be the most work, but make the most sense overall. If you can find a way to re-structure the 25 downloads / add content etc to capture the additional traffic that would seem to be the best choice.

Put some unique and interesting information on those pages, describe your download in detail, show screenshots or samples, write unique and sexy titles, optimize them, enjoy the traffic.
Download pages on my sites get LOTS of traffic. LOTS. One received 2475 visitors from search yesterday.
Lots of people link to download pages, tweet about them, like them on FB. This could be a huge opportunity.

Is there a reason you have 25 different pages? Could you consolidate everything into one page or does each page offer a separate download item?
If they are different tasks, they should have different titles. If they are the same, then there should probably only be one page.

Does this site have a duplicate content issue?
Google WMT is showing me only 2 short meta descriptions under "HTML Improvements" but I believe http://www.customgia.com may have a content duplication issue. Numerous keywords are used repeatedly across many product descriptions. To make matters worse, every product page has a "Design It!" button that sends the user to a flash-based jewelry designer in which they can edit the product's appearance. I'm not sure if these "designer pages" are adding unnecessary and potentially damaging duplicate content but it's certainly a possibility. There are many items on this site that are similar to one another but not the same. The product description tend to use the same phrases over and over again - words like crystal, Swarovski, beaded, design it, customize, change, pearl, glass beads, iridescent, pearl, drop earrings are used a lot. What I'm stuck on is whether or not I should be focusing on a content duplication issue as the primary SEO problem or if there is something bigger. Thank you for any assistance you can provide!

Title Tag
Is there any value in adding semantically similar words in the title tag? For instance, I have an alcohol rehab website www.alcohol-rehab.ltd.uk, I offer local search pages too. Would the title tag "Alcohol Rehab Bedfordshire | Alcoholic Rehabilitation Clinics Beds" Be more valuable than "Alcohol Rehab Clinics Bedfordshire | www.alcohol-rehab.ltd.uk" And is is worth while having the url in each title tag? Also is it worth while (seo wise) writing a description tag for each page, other than for a call to action that is?

How much SEO value does a fashion site get from bolting text onto the bottom of home page? Does the value compensate for cluttering up a page focused on an iconic image?
Getting ready to launch a completely redesigned site for a fashion designer. Since it is a fashion site, visitors do not need text to describe what the site is about., We are weighing three options: 1) clean design with no text (just images and navigational links), 2) bolting on a couple of sentences of text at the bottom of the page to signal keyword terms to the search engines, 3) following the lead of the top ranking site in the category and adding lots of text to the bottom of the page. Do the SEO benefits justify cluttering up the design by bolting text onto the bottom of the home page, and if so, how many characters of text seem to be the minimum to be effective?

Should I worry about duplicate titles on pages where there is paginated content?
LivingThere.com is a real estate search site and many of our content pages are "search result" - ish in that a page often provides all the listings that are available and this may go on for multiple pages. For example, this is a primary page about a building: http://livingthere.com/building/31308-Cocoa-Exchange Because of the number of listings, the listings paginate to a second page: http://livingthere.com/building/31308-Cocoa-Exchange?MListings_page=2 Both pages have the same Page Title. Is this a concern? If so is there a "best practice" for giving paginated content different titles? Thanks! Nate

Should one page with markers or six separate pages?
Hi - I'm working on a site that was set up with 6 bios on one page, with markers jumping to each person's name. I was thinking about separating those into 6 different pages, but not sure if that's the right thing to do. Advice about keeping the bios on one page vs splitting them up? (Am I more likely to rank for those peoples' names if I have a unique page, or is the one page url with each different marker in it, just as good?) Ranking well for those names isn't a huge goal of the site, but it would be nice to make the choice that would help with that rank. Thanks for your input Emma

Home page duplicated content issue
Hi there! The home page of my site can be seen under www.mysitename.com and www.mysitename.com/EN/ or www.mysitename.com/ES/ (depending on your language). I understand that this is duplicated content because they show the same content under different URLs. To solve this we've done (depending on your language) a 301 redirect from www.mysitename.com to www.mysitename.com/EN/ or www.mysitename.com/ES/ Is this correct? Thanks!

Would it be bad to change the canonical URL to the most recent page that has duplicate content, or should we just 301 redirect to the new page?
Is it bad to change the canonical URL in the tag, meaning does it lose it's stats? If we add a new page that may have duplicate content, but we want that page to be indexed over the older pages, should we just change the canonical page or redirect from the original canonical page? Thanks so much! -Amy
